News From St. Sarkis Church
This Tuesday is  the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.  At this time of remembrance, we express our prayers of hope in the resurrection of our Lord, for the souls of those who lost their lives seventeen years ago in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.

We pray specially for the soul of   Garo Voskerijian, a victim of 9/11 and for the comfort of his family members.

"We, the priests and people, entreat you, O merciful Lord, with those who have fallen asleep in faith, receive us also in the same hope of resurrection, into the city of Jerusalem, above, in which the just are assembled, so that with them we may always glorify the three persons of the Trinity."
(From the Armenian Hymn sung during the Requiem Service)
Membership Letter

Dear St. Sarkis Church Parishioners,

We greatly appreciate and thank you for your dedicated service and continued support in making Saint Sarkis Church a vibrant spiritual and cultural center serving the needs of the Armenian Community. We invite you to join the growing number of parishioners who are dues paying members of our church. As such, you will be part of a devoted group of parishioners serving the church and community and participating in the decisions shaping the future of St. Sarkis Church.

Membership dues are an important part of our budget and as paid members you are eligible to vote in the General Membership Meeting, serve on the Board of Trustees and be entitled to certain benefits such as discounted hall rental rates, school registration, etc. Such reduced rates are offered if both spouses are paid members.

Kindly inform us of any changes in your address, phone or e-mail so you may receive the E-Sunday Bulletin of Saint Sarkis Church sent electronically by Der Nareg every Friday.

We look forward to working with you in strengthening the mission of Saint Sarkis Church.

Marathon to Benefit Gavar Special School for Children With Disabilities
This f all, attorney and avid jogger Anahid Ugurlayan will be running the Hamptons Marathon to raise money to benefit Gavar Special School for children with both physical and mental disabilities.
Over the past decade, Anahid has dedicated each of her marathons to raising money for a charity, both Armenian and non-Armenian. This will be the fourth she's run to benefit FAR. It will also be her final marathon.
"I am proud to run my 10th marathon for FAR. My love and admiration for FAR began during my Young Professionals Trip to Armenia in 2002," said Anahid. "The proceeds of the run will benefit a new project, specifically the renovations to a wing of the school that will be dedicated as a trade and vocational space for older students so that they can be self-sufficient upon graduation."

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS (7.4-13)
I have great confidence in you; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.
For when we came into Macedonia, this body of ours had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn-conflicts on the outside, fears within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.
Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it-I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while- yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong or of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. By all this we are encouraged.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK (7.31-37)
Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man.
After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Be opened!" ). At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.
Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done everything well," they said. "He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."

FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE HOLY MOTHER

Saturday, September 8, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God. The birth of the Holy Mother is not recorded in the Bible; the account of this event comes to us from other writings that are not part of the New Testament. According to tradition, Joachim and Anna were faithful and pious and waiting for the promised Messiah. They were elderly and childless. They prayed to God for a child and were blessed with a daughter they named Mary, who became the Mother of the Messiah.

PAREGENTAN OF THE FAST LEADING TO FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS
This Sunday, September 9, is the Paregentan of the Fast leading to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Khachveratz ), which is next Sunday, September 17. Because the Exaltation is a Tabernacle Feast, it is preceded by a week (Monday to Friday) of fasting and followed by a memorial day of remembrance.
