"Reflections on Wisdom"
Rev. Ed Brock
March 1, 2020

This Sunday, in keeping with the theme of our Soul Matters Sharing Circles, I will talk about wisdom. What is wisdom?  Where do we find it? How do we know if something is "wise" or not? Can we find wisdom from others, or must we find it ourselves? These are some of the issues I will explore in this month's series of sermons.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday.

March Theme - Wisdom
This Sunday in Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE)
CYRE groups will meet in their rooms to continue exploring the theme "Side with Love."

The CYRE children and youth are also excited to bring you their next Outreach Action Project. It's been brought to our attention that our Little Food Pantry is getting lots of use. We are glad it is providing help to those who need it. However, additional items have been requested. The CYRE program will be hosting a drive through March 29 to collect the following items (only new items please):
  • Warm socks (men's/women's all sizes)
  • Underwear (men's/women's all sizes)
  • Toiletries (travel size shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes)
  • Menstrual products (pads, tampons)
  • Cough drops
  • Can openers (manual, small)
We are collecting items in the boxes in the Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary Foyer.

CYRE registration is open! All families, new and returning, should register each year. Click  here  to register!

First Sunday Potluck
This Sunday After Church

This Sunday, March 1, is the date for our monthly potluck lunch!

We invite you to join us after the service for this special opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy each other's company while sharing a delicious meal. Bring your favorite food, whether homemade or store bought. Drop off your dish before the service, either on the tables in the corner of the Fellowship Hall or in the warming ovens in the kitchen.

Request from the Hospitality Committee: Please put your name on your dishes. And if you bring a dish, help us make sure it makes it to the table!

The Search for a New Minister

The search for our new settled minister has now reached the important "pre-candidating" stage. This means that the Ministerial Search Committee (MSC) has completed the first round of interviews of all of our ministerial applicants and selected three candidates who we will be bringing in for in-depth, formal interviews in February and March.

We are following the very thorough process developed by the UUA Transitions Office that has served the denomination very well. The process advises that we do in-depth interviews with three pre-candidates and from those, we select the candidate who we will bring in for an interview with the entire congregation during "Candidating Week."

Candidating Week will be in late April, during which time the candidate will conduct worship services, meet with congregants, talk to committees and staff, and spend a great deal of time getting to know our congregation. Everyone in our congregation will have a chance to get to know the candidate.

We are excited about getting close to the time to announce a candidate for you to meet and evaluate, but until then we still have a lot of work to do, references to check, and questions to ask to make sure we find the right candidate for UUCH. And we will continue to keep you posted.

As always, please contact us via email if you have questions, or talk to any MSC member.

All New "Chili Fest"
Saturday, March 7

On Saturday, March 7, we will debut UUCH's Chili Fest, a combination coffee house/open mic/chili dinner (not to be confused with the much loved Chili Cookoff). Come to enjoy music, stories, dancing, and more by our own talented UUCH members and friends while dining on some fine chili.

Bring your food at 5:30 p.m. We'll eat starting at 6:00 p.m., with entertainment to start shortly after.

You can sign up to perform by contacting John Schulz. Sign up to contribute chili and other items for dinner, either on the sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall or using the SignUpGenius.

Childcare will be provided, but please let us know if you will need it.

New UU Class Continues This Sunday

Join us on the Sunday mornings of  March 1 and March 8 for a New UU Class. We will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Adult RE Classroom.

You don't have to be new to UU to join us for a fun discussion about what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist and to learn more about UUCH. This three-part series explores important themes in UU congregational life, such as worship, theology, history, covenant, faith development, social justice, and membership. It focuses on introducing newcomers to Unitarian Universalism, but those who have been at UUCH for a while will also be able to share and connect with others as we explore our own beliefs and how they intersect with the UU tradition. Childcare will be provided for all three classes.

Each session stands alone, so come even if you cannot attend all sessions. Handouts for any missed sessions will be available.

Contact Adult RE or Membership for further information.

Fair Share Congregation

Did you know UUCH is a Fair Share Congregation? As part of our membership in the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and our commitment to supporting Unitarian Universalism beyond our own backyard, our church (like many others) contributes to the UUA's Annual Program Fund (APF). This is considered an important responsibility of UU congregations to invest in and strengthen the presence of Unitarian Universalism. Each congregation is requested to give a specific amount to the UUA APF each year. This amount is based on each congregation's annual operating costs.

UUCH has historically been a "Fair Share Congregation" -- one that contributes the amount fully requested by the UUA each year. During our move from the old church building to our new home on Broadmor Road, though, we did not contribute at Fair Share level for a couple of years because we had financial burdens that were greater than usual. However, since we have sold the old church building and paid off the mortgage on our new church building, we have returned to Fair Share status and are proud to be a Fair Share Congregation!

Share the Plate

During February and March, we will share half the Sunday offering each week with Habitat for Humanity of Madison County!

Habitat for Humanity of Madison County is an ecumenical, grassroots, Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from our community and make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. The need for affordable housing in Huntsville and Madison County is great. Of the families in our area who make less than $48,000 a year, 42% of them pay 50% or more of their gross income for housing. This is a statistic that needs to change. Only a few organizations are working to solve this problem -- Habitat for Humanity of Madison County is one of the largest and most effective. We are all better off when our community has better homes for our families.

Care List

This Sunday, February 23, 2020,  at our Circle of Candles:

Michelle Clark lit a Candle of Concern: I am unexpectedly looking for work. Asking for prayers and support as I find and weigh options over the next few weeks.

Erin Reid, Director of Religious Education  lit a Candle of Joy: It is a joy to return from my leave. Special gratitude to the Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) team that has led the program these past 4 months -- Harper Goodman, Jes Zelaya, Steve Rittenberg, and Audrey Fox. Thank you! Thank you!
