Mr. Dave Mueller
Principal's Corner

Today we conclude the first six days of online classes. Thanks and congratulations to students for their engagement and diligence and to faculty for their care for students and for the high quality of instruction! Here are some comments from teachers:
  • "I'm impressed by my colleagues' thoughtful, well-constructed plans with clear goals and step-by-step instructions."
  • "I'm enjoying getting to know students in their environment. When I asked my students to post a picture of their home learning environment and to explain how they planned to organize their workspace, they were very thoughtful in their responses and kind to each other. "
  • "I have enjoyed seeing my colleagues be adaptable and flexible. Many are trying new things and having success."
  • "Using Microsoft Teams to see and talk with the students is a difference maker. Plus, I think they like seeing each other. I know I like seeing them as well."
Check out the Rocket Daily News Mrs. Shannon Kapp emails to students, faculty, and staff early on every school day. Thanks to everyone who is contributing photos, videos, poems, and prayers to keep us connected. Please let us know how we on the faculty and staff can be helpful. Email is the best way to contact us during this period when most of us must work from home.

The EdChoice Scholarship application window for 2020-21 scholarships opens on Wednesday April 1. We encourage parents who live in a public school district with a high school on the state list of EdChoice designated schools, who do not already have an EdChoice scholarship, and who have not yet sent application materials to McNicholas to send them to Mrs. Kendra Lonneman (klonneman@mcnhs.org) by Friday of this week. Please send 1) a scholarship request form, and 2) an acceptable proof of address. (We already have the third required item, a copy of the birth certificate.) McNicholas will submit the new applications it has received before April 1 on April 1. The state will award scholarships in the order in which new applications are submitted. It is likely that no scholarships will be left for new applications submitted after April 1. McNicholas expects families who have applied for McNicholas tuition assistance and who are eligible for an EdChoice scholarship to apply for an EdChoice scholarship so that the first part of a family's demonstrated financial need will be fulfilled by EdChoice.   The Ohio Legislature might remove schools from the list of designated schools prior to April 1. Meeting the April 1 date is essential only for NEW EdChoice applications. The state has communicated that all RENEWAL applications will be funded for 2020-21.

News and reminders

Report cards emailed
Report cards were emailed late last week. Please contact Dan Rosenbaum at drosenbaum@mcnhs.org with questions.

Easter Break
McNicholas will take Easter Break as planned, April 10 through 19. Hang in there! Break is coming!

Social distancing
Please remember to follow the guidelines for good social distancing--remaining out of public places such as shopping centers, movie theatres and stadiums, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others when possible. Your health and well-being are very important to us.  Please take care of yourself and your families.

Talking to your kids about coronavirus
The Counseling Department has provided some resources for talking to your students about coronavirus and the situation we are currently experiencing. All McNicholas counselors are available for guidance or resources. Please contact them via email.

AP Testing Updates
Due to the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus, the College Board has begun making changes to the AP tests for this school year. Testing will be changed from in-person to online testing, and will be shortened to only one Free Response Question (FRQ) and no multiple choice, set to take approximately 45 minutes. Similarly College Board is hosting free online review courses each day and these can be found at:  https://www.youtube.com/user/advancedplacement and the schedule of each course is listed in this PDF . To find more information regarding the AP testing and the changes to AP tests, please visit:  https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/coronavirus-updates

As we await more updates from College Board, we ask that you please hold any requests for cancellation or refund until after new testing dates are released on April 3. At that time, we will release more information about how and when to cancel a test and receive a refund if your students' tests have already been paid. Thank you for your patience in what we are sure is an extremely stressful time regarding these courses and tests.
