Divrei Tikvah  RJohannaHeadShot
From Rabbi Johanna Hershenson

On the verge of an empty nest for the first time, I am experiencing the pending arrival of this Rosh Hashanah (Jewish new year) season as warm yet powerful winds of infinite possibility...

Gratitude. I turned fifty this past summer and I feel an excitement similar to that of my youngest anticipating her freshman year in college.

Gratitude. Mark and I, after more than thirty years and just short of ten venues for life and work, feel equally landed in a home community. That we both want to stay where we live and work and play right now is a new and profoundly grounding sensation.

Gratitude. Knowing we want to live permanently in Central Oregon and knowing that the people who make up Temple Beth Tikvah have become as important to us as our own families, Mark and I pinch ourselves. How lucky are we, as a rabbinic couple? Very.

Gratitude. I took a risk a year and a half ago, deciding to enter a Masters of Counseling course of study and practice just as I finished my breast cancer treatments. While it has been intellectually and professionally exhilarating, my studies have required sacrifice. My family has endured my frenetic pace. The people who make up our congregation have embraced my journey with substantial patience. Eight more months until graduation. As much as I love Temple Beth Tikvah, it is a gift for me to cultivate financial security that is independent of the congregation without compromising my ability to serve its mission. I believe the two part-time professional commitments will blend easily once the requirements of full time graduate school are fulfilled.

Weird observation. Mark and I are noticing that as the loose strings in our lives are coming together, we are simultaneously experiencing thoughts about legacy and grandchildren. Neither of our daughters are in committed relationships and yet we feel a drive to build a home designed for having so much fun, our future grandchildren will want to come often.

Big news, if you haven't heard already. Mark and I have sold our home and entered escrow on a rustic, off-grid historic ranch that lies twenty-five minutes east of Bend. Our intention is to create a recreational ranch, a place for creative and nature-based play. We look forward to welcoming Temple Beth Tikvah to our new home for all sorts of activities, celebrations, and retreat.

Warm yet powerful winds of infinite possibility...
What is your metaphor from the natural world for this High Holy Day season?

Shanah tovah umetukah - May the New Year bring goodness and sweetness into our lives.

~~ Rabbi Hershenson's office hours are by appointment. If you would like to set up an appointment, please contact her by email at: johannahershenson@gmail.com, or by phone at 541-213-9880.

Message from the Co - Presidents
Sheila Luber and Anne Rosenfield

The High Holy Days arrive early this year and we hope that you have made your reservations. Please... volunteer to help because lots of hands are needed to put on so many activities in such a short time. Agree to read at Services whether in English or Hebrew, and consider donating to TBT's Social Action Fund to support worthy causes during this season of giving. Above all, please enjoy a rich and fulfilling High Holy Days experience. (For information and to make your reservation through September 3rd, go to TBT's website,

Two years after redoing our website , the URJ, which is our website host, decided to migrate client synagogues to the WordPress platform by August 31st. Though we are (technically) happy about this, it has been a little painful. Thank goodness for Tracy Smith who helped ease the transition with his knowledge of WordPress. Our thanks to Jeanne Freeman who recruited Tracy and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep us on track, reconstruct our forms and write content with an assist from Sheila Luber.

As always, a big thank you to Mark Schindel, our webmaster extraordinaire, for ensuring that all the pieces came together seamlessly on our website. The real kicker... everyone worked hard so that you, our dear members, would barely notice the change when you visit TBT's new WordPress website.

Rabbi Johanna and members of our new board met on July 24th for a 4-hour retreat. Our purpose? First, we wanted to lay a foundation of trust and connection to support our collaboration. Second, we wanted to clarify the role of board member. Third, we wanted to identify the congregational goals we need to accomplish this year and define what board members, committee chairs, and the rabbi must do to achieve these goals.

At our retreat, so many thoughtful ideas were shared that we ran out of time to consider them all. We met again on August 27th to finish our goal setting, and will share the results with you soon.

Shalom,
Ann & Sheila

Something NEW from the Oneg and Inventory chair, Jan Freeman-Bauer...

As many of you know, the last few years we have been asking congregants to contribute goodies to our Shabbat oneg tables to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and honoring our loved ones who have passed.
So, here's the something new...

You and your family may be interested in hosting the whole oneg solo! Bar and Bat mitzvah families have hosted in the past. I already have a family hosting an oneg in October and one in December.

I would be happy to share tips, but you would be prepping, setting up, providing goodies and clean up.
Some months there may be more than one Shabbat oneg, so check out the dates on the TBT website and give it some thought.

Please email me if you choose a date so I have a heads up before I begin my planning.

Thank you,
Jan

Social Action Update tikkun olam earth
Lynne Connelly

Congregants have partnered with Habitat for Humanity this quarter building a duplex which will house two Habitat families. Not only did our members enjoy the project but also the Habitat team loved our energy and enthusiasm. We have been welcomed to participate on future builds, so Bob Pollack has coordinated with them for a build day for October 5. He will need two crews of 5 to 7 people each, one from 8 to noon and one from 1 to 5.

Please call Bob at 310-622-5386 or email him at bublboybob@earthlink.net for this build or one in the future as we will be doing a build with them approximately every two months. No building expertise is required. And it's fun!!!

TBT will again fulfill the wishes of needy residents, mostly seniors, in facilities throughout Central Oregon in the Assistance League's Secret Santa program.   We will receive the residents' wish lists at the end of October, and TBT members wanting to participate will shop for requested items and package them in gift bags which we will take to ALB in early December. Last year we had 11 members participate and one who lives out of the area for the winter who made a donation. This year we hope to increase participation as ALB is expanding the program to include two additional facilities, both in LaPine. Please email Lynne Connelley at Lynne@MyBendProperty.com.

We continue our ongoing partnership with Mt. Star Family Relief Nurseries and are grateful to the BBYO who once again have stepped up to provide birthday bags for the Madras facility. Not only do the toys and books in the bags delight the children on their birthdays but also the contents include paper goods, cake mix and baking tins to enable the families to put together parties for their children. Mt. Star is a critical organization in family welfare in Central Oregon directly helping families with high stressors cope and thrive in our community. For more information see mtstar.org.

Our year-round partnering with Mt. Star is the Diaper Drive initiated early this year. We donated over 1,000 diapers and additional funds for Mt. Star during our initial drive the first quarter of 2018 even partially funding a defibrillator for a classroom. Diapers are a serious health issue for families stretching their funds beyond the breaking point. Mt. Star uses these diapers in the classrooms and offers them to families in need. Whenever you are shopping and think about it, toss a box of diapers sizes 3, 4 or 5 into your cart for Mt. Star.

Drop off options:
  • call or text Lynne at 541 408 6720 for pick-up
  • drop at the Mt. Star campus on Daggett Rd (a few minutes east of Costco across from Ensworth Elementary School)
  • or drop at Lynne's office, which is Stellar Realty 109 NW Greenwood, Suite 105.
Thank you for your support in these endeavors!
Lynne
