Featured Client: Location Professional Lori Balton
Grateful for a job that lets her explore the world, Lori Balton was the first location professional accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS). She was recognized with the 2017 Location Managers Guild International (LMGI) Trailblazer Award for this honor. Lori has worked with some of the best directors, designers, and location managers in the business. Her credits include: Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, A Wrinkle in Time, Argo, Inception, Memoirs of a Geisha, Seabiscuit, Catch Me If You Can, Pirates of the Caribbean, There Will be Blood, Heat, Ali and A River Runs Through It. Co-editor of the LMGI Compass Magazine, founding member, former President for five years, and current vice president of the LMGI, Lori is delighted to see the Guild thrive. Nominee for eight COLAs and winner of four, she was an early proponent of recognition for her craft. We were fortunate to catch up with her recently.
TLP: How did you get into locations?
Lori: I fell into location management after working as a production assistant, and then in craft services, production coordination, and assistant directing. I immediately felt at home in locations, enjoying the different challenges that came with each day. When my daughter was born (26 years ago!), I made the decision to only scout. Even though the hours were still long, I had more freedom to manage time so I could also be a present parent. It worked out well for me and now I'm able to spend most of my time on the road.
TLP: What do you love most about being a location scout?
Lori: My favorite part is being out in the world. I love researching and exploring locations, meeting people from all walks of life, learning about how they live, and capturing what makes them unique.
TLP: What do you do when you're not working?
Lori: I'm almost always working... which is great because even when I'm not, I like to do the same things - travel and take pictures. Animals, books, movies, spinning, volunteer work with the LMGI and the Academy also keep me busy. My husband and I live in Venice, California. We have two rescue dogs and a daughter with her own menagerie of horses and dogs.
