Monthly News from the President's Palette
I recently attended a back-to-school meeting where the presenter posed this question:

What other profession has the opportunity to “start over” fresh each year?

A fresh start each school year gives us a chance to fall in love all over again with our work. Loving what you do, and doing what you love, shape the work of an art educator. The presenter at my meeting sparked an interesting idea:

What would a love letter to the art education profession look like?

I’ve been falling back in love again with the work I do and thought you might want to take a moment to craft your own love letter and remember some of the reasons you have chosen this profession. I imagine it might be written sort of like this:

Dear Art Education,

I’ve know you for _______ years/months/days, and I’m still madly in love with you after all of this time.

Remember that student that no one else seemed to be able to reach, but in the art classroom they would shine?

Remember that time when I put up the display of student artwork, and the students were so proud (the parents too)?

Remember that time when I stayed up way too late, thinking about you, and making sure that I had everything ready to give you my best?

Remember how excited all of the students were about that project?

Remember when students used all of those pieces of recyclables and turned them into treasures?

Remember that student who never had, and then really did? Wasn’t that magic?!

Remember that feeling when a student felt successful/proud/resilient/passionate/reflective/expressive/empathetic/inspired in class?

Remember that time when I didn’t even have a classroom, or supplies, but still made it work?

And remember when I knew that this was exactly where I was meant to be?

You still give me butterflies.
I am so very glad to be a part of this.
XOXO

Signed,
_____________

2018 FAEA Best Practices Lesson Exchange

Do you have an exciting lesson that you would like to share with other members? Maybe a unique lesson on incorporating Vintage Vogue ideas into your class curriculum? Here is an opportunity for you to leave conference with lots of new lesson ideas! Participate in in our Best Practices Lesson Exchange on Friday, October 19th from 9:30 - 11:00 PM located adjacent to the Artist Bazaar.

To participate in the FAEA Best Practices Lesson Exchange, please complete the  form by September 15, 2018.

Once accepted, all you have to do is bring your lesson(s) with about 50 copies and an example of the lesson to share during this event. We will display them on tables, so all interested members can walk around, view them, take pictures, and receive a hands-on copy of the lesson guide. If you participate and bring a lesson to display, then you will be one of first people to get a copy of every lesson. This means that the more participants we have, the more lessons you get to take home! We encourage you to make your display as creative as you like. The lesson(s) can be displayed on a small foldable board for the table or you can just have a sample with your copies of the lesson guide. Set up will start at 6:00 PM. If you have any questions, please contact Steve Miller at  Steve.faea@gmail.com .

FAEA Big Give-Away

Hello fellow art educators! Do you feel the need to un-clutter your art storage closets? Thin out your art library? Please consider donating these items to this year's Big Give-Away. Each year this event has been hugely successful and we want this year to be no different. Items can be as simple as a bag of plastic containers for water or as elaborate as a set of art prints or art education books. These young teachers will grab them up and will be forever grateful to you. Bring your donations to registration and we will be sure to get them to our storage area until we are ready for the event on Saturday, October 20. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
