Greetings,
Labor Day may have come and gone, but summer is not over yet--and neither is our
summer sale. We know that many of you may not have had the opportunity to check out the thousands of pre-2017 titles that we have discounted 30%, or that you simply need more time to browse and check against your library's holdings. That is why the sale will go on through the end of September, or possibly longer.
Invigorated by the recent change of ownership and the subsequent investment in systems upgrades and inventory, the staff at Worldwide Books is working diligently to process a large influx of new titles for our approval-plan program. Our new owners, Meghna Modi and Glenn Wong of MarcNow, are committed to Worldwide's mission to provide specialized collection development for art libraries. While we are undergoing certain changes to our internal procedures, we continue to deliver the core services necessary for the administration of tailored approval plans and firm-order fulfillment. We look forward to working with you in the months and years to come!

Becoming John Marin
BECOMING JOHN MARIN: MODERNIST AT WORK.
Ed. by Ann Prentice Wagner. .
Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, 2018. Published by University of Arkansas Press, Fayetteville. In English.
432 pp. with 453 ills. (446 col.). 32 x 24 cm.
Hardcover, ISBN 978-1-68226-058-6
$50.00x
This collection catalogue of nearly 300 works by John Marin (1870-1953) recently donated to the Arkansas Arts Center by the artist's daughter-in-law was published on the occasion of an exhibition with the same title, which featured only 79 works from the collection and 33 others on loan from other institutions.
Publisher's description:
"Publisher's description: John Marin was a major figure among the cutting-edge circle of American modernist artists who showed his work in Alfred Stieglitz's New York galleries from 1909 until 1950. A new collection of the artist's work at the Arkansas Arts Center, given by Marin's daughter-in-law, forms the basis of this first book of essays and images to concentrate on Marin's drawings in the context of Marin's life, his watercolors, and his etchings. We follow Marin to his most famous subject matter: New York City and the coast of Maine. Foundational drawings and an unfinished watercolor of the towering Woolworth Building, still under construction when they were made in 1912, begin the story of a renowned group of watercolors first exhibited in 1913 at Alfred Stieglitz's 291 Gallery and then at the ground-breaking 1913 Armory Show. Other images take us to lesser-known locales, such as the Ramapo Mountains in New York and New Jersey where Marin often painted when he couldn't get to Maine. More obscure aspects of the artist's career explored in this collection include portraits of friends and family, charming drawings of animals, and circus scenes.

Two Red Roses Foundation
The
Two Red Roses Foundation is a private, non-profit educational institution in Palm Harbor, Florida, with a mission to promote an understanding of the American Arts & Crafts movement through the acquisition, conservation, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of the decorative and fine arts. One way in which they promote this understanding is through the publication of beautifully produced collection catalogues. Each catalogue focuses on a particular aspect of the Foundation's collections and features full-color photography alongside scholarly essays. The Foundation's extensive collections will be housed in the
Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, currently under construction and scheduled to be complete by the summer of 2019.

"LENSES EMBRACING THE BEAUTIFUL": TWO GENERATIONS OF PICTORIAL PHOTOGRAPHS, 1890-1940S, FROM THE TWO RED ROSES FOUNDATION.
Christian A. Peterson.
Two Red Roses Foundation, Palm Harbor, 2017.
288 pp. 29 x 22 cm. In English.
Hardcover,
ISBN 9780982083369
Publisher's description:
"A photography movement emerged during the late nineteenth century featuring soft-focus effects, tonally subtle images, and atmospheric elements that mimicked the current Tonalism style of painting. Practitioners referred to this as Pictorialism, and photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Gertrude Kasabier, Clarence H. White, Adolf Fassbender, and Edward S. Curtis used their work to help champion the cause of photography as one of the fine arts.
"'Lenses Embracing the Beautiful': Two Generations of Pictorial Photographs, 1890-1940s" analyzes the aesthetics and techniques of pictorial photography and discusses camera clubs, exhibitions, and publications that were essential to the success of the movement. More than forty separate artists are featured within, along with their biographies and over one hundred full-color plates of their best work from the collection of the Two Red Roses Foundation. Important photographic books and periodicals are also presented, including Stieglitz's influential journals Camera Notes and Camera Work, which helped spread Pictorialism and the later Photo-Secessionist style world wide."
BEAUTY IN COMMON THINGS: AMERICAN ARTS & CRAFTS POTTERY FROM THE TWO RED ROSES FOUNDATION.
Second edition.
Martin Eidelberg et al.
Two Red Roses Foundation, Palm Harbor, 2018.
268 pp. 32 x 24 cm. In English
Hardcover, ISBN 9780982083376
Publisher's description:
"At the turn of the twentieth century, Americans were captivated by the concept of "Arts & Crafts" pottery. Throughout the country professional artisans as well as amateur ceramists, many of them women, were creating works that were both beautiful and functional. Nationwide, from New England's Grueby and Marblehead potteries to Cincinnati's renowned Rookwood Pottery to Newcomb College in New Orleans and Van Briggle Pottery of Colorado Springs, Americans responded to William Morris' dictum: "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." Proponents of the Arts and Crafts movement responded to the crassness of mechanized society by insisting on "beauty in common things."
Where work had once been viewed in a negative light, manual labor was now seen as favorable, having a redemptive value. "Joy in one's labor" became a noble maxim to live by, and beauty was measured in terms of the worker's personal happiness. The Arts and Crafts movement appealed to right-minded members of society who envisioned a morally and aesthetically elevated environment.
This publication brings together one hundred and twenty nine vases of great rarity and exquisite beauty representing the best of American Arts and Crafts pottery. It is the second edition of "Beauty in Common Things", originally published in 2008. This new edition retains the brilliantly written and well researched dissertation by authors Jonathan Clancy and Martin Eidelberg. It presents a timeless exploration of how different potteries responded to the new idealism of their age and to the aesthetic and social demands which were put on art. Forty-five new vases, purchased for the Two Red Roses Foundation collection, have been added to this edition. Kevin W. Tucker wrote extended scholarly essays for many of these vases and produced profiles of four additional potteries: Crook Pottery, North Dakota Pottery, Redlands Pottery and Valentien Pottery."
