Dementia Friendly Yellow Springs
What is a Dementia Friendly Business?
It's simple: it is a good business. It is a business that helps people to live and shop in their hometown, Yellow Springs. And it's a thriving, successful business.
People with memory difficulties want to shop locally and will do so when that business is more accessible.
Being Dementia Friendly will enable businesses to retain existing customers and attract new ones.
Forty-five percent of residents of Yellow Springs will be 65 years of age or older by 2020. By making some small changes now, business will be able to anticipate a growing need from both customers and staff.
In Britain, they talk about the "grey pound"; we need to talk about the "grey dollar". People over 65 spend money on entertainment, on eating out, on clothing, and on groceries. And, for the most part, they do that by actually shopping in a store, rather than online.
The Yellow Springs Senior Center, in collaboration with the Greene County Council on Aging, will host a Breakfast on
September 15 at 8:30 at the Senior Center on Xenia Avenue to kick-off its project, Dementia Friendly Yellow Springs. Partial funding for this project comes from the Yellow Springs Community Foundation and the Del Mar Social Innovation Fund of The Dayton Foundation.
It's free (and healthy thanks to Friends Care Center) and will be informative and less than 40 minutes. Please join us to learn how you can work with others to make Yellow Springs a Dementia Friendly Community.
