We may not be face-to-face,
but we are connected with you.
Free Screen Sharing, Skype, Zoom, Net Meeting.com, Linkedin and others have recently become the vehicles replacing our vehicles in communicating with our customer or supply partners.

In an environment discouraging social gathering or encouraging social distancing, these tools allow us to gather, educate, train, and promote new ideas and concepts in a healthy environment.

Insulectro has adopted an aggressive internal training program during this stay at home period to assure new developments from our supply base are well understood and applied to customer interests and needs. In addition, some of our more progressive customers are scheduling training and education sessions with their internal and external sales staffs.

Those same sales professionals are in turn promoting virtual sales calls with their customers drawing on the resources readily available to support current programs. This support can be initiated with a simple calendar invite as opposed to coordinating travel plans for the various support personnel. The Insulectro team is currently conducting numerous daily virtual sessions to support our customers and their growth plans.

You'll see examples of this throughout this month's newsletter.

Isola’s Travis Kelly:
Maintaining Continuity of Supply
On April 9, 2020, i-Connect007's Barry Matties interviewed Isola President & CEO Travis Kelly. Excerpts here are used by permission. To read or listen to entire interview, click this link <Travis Kelly Interview with Barry Matties>
Barry Matties: Travis, the recent COVID-19 outbreak has impacted the supply chains around the world. Please share with our listeners how this has impacted our industry.

Travis Kelly: One thing we’ve been focused on is maintaining the continuity of supply from our vendors and continue to be 100% operational at all our global facilities. There are three key pillars that are very important that have allowed us to remain open, and I would imagine many of the other businesses within our industry. First and foremost, we have a diverse global supply chain that has allowed us to ensure we have the materials that we need to produce our laminate. At this point in time, it’s extremely important to have very close communication with our supply base, and that has been essential to the overall strategy around continuity of supply—making sure that we’re very transparent and collaborative relative to what we need and when we need it and as well as where we need it.

Matties: What sort of trends are you seeing in the supply chain? Is there an increase in demand, or have you noticed a reduction in orders?

Kelly: Specific to Isola, we’ve seen a very large increase in demand. Part of that is the overall medical industry, and a lot of our laminate is used—especially when you get into the pandemic, such as COVID-19, with the need for ventilators. We’re seeing a pretty large spike in demand for certain material grades that are used in that type of equipment. We’ve been extremely busy, not just in the United States, but at our global sites as well in China and Taiwan.

Matties: It's amazing how technology is really stepping in to keep things moving. Related to that end, there has been a lot of support in the industry to help each other to get through these challenging times. What sort of stories of support are you hearing out there?

Kelly: Yes. As I said a little bit earlier, as we talk about supply chain, Isola is actively involved in supplying critical material to many of our customers that are manufacturing metal equipment to fight COVID-19. And, arguably, even some new OEMs—as people have seen GM and some of the automotive companies—are now producing ventilators. Isola is treating all material orders that are needed to assist during this pandemic as the top priority. What does that mean? That means to the extent possible, we break into production schedules and move raw materials around the globe at our expense to support emergency or to help save lives.

Isola is committed to fighting this pandemic alongside our business partners. And we will continue to utilize the full strength of our company to provide quality material in an expedited fashion. There are many examples—especially over the last several weeks—where there’s a huge pickup in demand for certain grades of our material that are needed in a lot of these different medical devices. We are doing everything humanly possible, and having our teams across the globe work many days and shifts to provide this material as quickly as possible to those manufacturers to get the material in a place where they need it and when they need it.
Keeping the Shelves Stocked!
Insulectro's Supply Chain Team
Continues to Deliver
Though the last month has surfaced many new challenges for us all, I'm happy to report that Insulectro's Supply Chain team has risen to the occasion, continuing our focus on providing consistent, uninterrupted inventory availability for our customers .

As a team, we responded very quickly over a month ago, transitioning to working remotely as a connected unit. In this interim "work from home" environment, we've proven we can successfully maintain the same high level of service which our front line and customers expect. We are constantly linked and communicating through our advanced suite of internal tools for calls, chat, video conference, and collaboration.

We're fortunate that our customers make products which are essential to US medical and military infrastructure . We take this very seriously and embrace our special responsibility to maintain the same high level of service during this time. We are "full speed ahead" with replenishing materials, leveraging our talented team, our robust demand and supply planning processes , and our various analytical tools and reporting, to ensure our shelves stay well stocked.

The team has done an outstanding job actively and frequently engaging our suppliers, to ensure the rapid movement of PCB materials from manufacture to our shelves , and ultimately to our customers. This strong link to our supply base has helped us avoid bottlenecks and delays, as demand remains very strong.

We are continuing to stay laser focused on execution , holding frequent demand and supply check-in calls with our key suppliers, as well as collaborating closely with our internal teams (Sales, Ops, etc.) to align on any issues that might arise, anticipating roadblocks so we can execute in lieu of the current challenging external environment.   This vigilance is at the heart of Insulectro's culture and purpose : anticipating and adapting in times of constant change, staying focused on "getting stuff done", and enabling our customers to make "Better Circuits Faster".

IH550H: Organic-based Resin System in droppable- Reduces Weight & Overall Costs
As presented in previous issues, Isola has identified and invested in key market segments such as wired and wireless communications, RF/MW, and automotive electrification
All have specific needs to support their respective market, however, automotive electrification has some interesting challenges all the while presenting some excellent opportunities. Required attributes for automotive electrification include; high thermal cycling exposure, continuous high operating temperatures, high voltage where applications require excellent CAF resistance and very heavy copper designs that need superior crack resistance for long term reliability

Ceramic based materials have been employed to meet these requirements, but by developing an organic based resin system , Isola has decreased the weight of the device and subsequently lowered the material and manufacturing cost.

At IPC this year, Isola answered the call and formally presented IS550H . This new halogen-free resin system has superior thermal resistance and CAF performance at a 1000 VDC bias for 3000 hours after 6x260 C reflow simulation and extreme preconditioning (85C/85%/96H).

In addition, the IS550H has excellent flow and fill characteristics for heavy copper, heat sink and bus bar applications with FR4 like processing.  The objective of developing IS550H was to address the need to move away from ceramic substrates for automotive electrification, but this extremely robust product could favorably impact additional markets such as the down hole market, burn in boards, and the polyimide market particularly applications requiring the use of heavy copper.
It's a pleasure to work with Isola.

Semi-Additive for all!
7 micron traces 20 microns tall,
you can do this in your shop right now!
Who doesn’t love two things that go great together? Chocolate and peanut butter, wine and cheese, pizza and beer. How about DuPont’s DI5125M and JX Nippon’s JXIT-1?

DuPont’s new high-resolution photoresist combined with JX Nippon’s ultra-thin foil brings mSAP (modified semi-additive process) to PCB fabs with conventional equipment.

DuPont’s DI5125M is 25 microns thick and can resolve very small features with high adhesion. Below are 7-micron photoresist pillars.
The film is fast developing, low leaching . Additionally, high resolution films typically need high exposure energy, but this film works with a conventional 40 to 60 mJ/cm 2 .

Combine this new film with the ultra-thin JXIT-1 foil, and you have a system for making very fine, and if needed, very tall circuits.

The JXIT-1 foil comes in several thicknesses on a ½ oz carrier, down to 1.5 microns (about 60 microinches). This allows for rapid etching after the circuits are plated and the photoresist is removed. Below are 15/15 and 10/10 L/S plated to about 15 microns thick.
Since the photoresist is 25 microns thick, taller traces are simply a matter of additional plating. The JXUT foil comes with either high adhesion or hyper low profile bond treatments depending on your application.

If you would like to learn more about this technology or get samples, let your Insulectro representative know. You can also contact Jeff Johnson at jjohnson@insulectro.com

Insulectro to Support PPE
Face Shields Production
The Printed Electronics team has recently secured a converting contract that includes slitting, rewinding and sheeting polycarbonate to support the manufacturing of protective face shields to help fight the COVID-19 Pandemic. One of our suppliers who is the prime contractor for these shields needed additional capacity since the volume required far exceeded their internal capacity . They reached out to us to see if we could support this worthy cause and we agreed!
Project Manus is a MIT Face Shield design that was developed at no cost to the consumer and has licensed the design with restrictions that will prevent price gauging. It’s a simple design that can be produced in high volume with flat packaging and assembled on site . It also allows consumers and companies to donate shields to disadvantaged areas.

We are excited to support this worthy cause and help in protecting the front lines of this Covid-19 pandemic.

Michael Creeden
Insulectro's Design Expert, Your Resource
In this transitional time, we are all facing the task of how to redefine our work effort as many of us are now working from home . For many of us in the roles of education and field support we have been remote workers who travel to see customers. We miss seeing people in person . Nowadays, the “field” in field support is an internet meeting. My software of choice has been Zoom , but they’re all pretty good.

I was planning to be on adventure and travel to the Upper Peninsula, in the state of Michigan, to support Calumet Electronics’ friends at Michigan Tech University during mid-March. To some that might seem like a cold assignment, but I call that perfect hockey weather! Although the travel part of the trip was canceled the classes still were held . That hockey determination paid off, as I believe the students really seemed to love it.

We’ve had several fabrication shops call us in to support their OEM customers as they look at adding some (SI) Signal Integrity Reviews to their design circuits prior to be built. Always better to catch those potential SI errors prior to building revision 1.

Now a great story has come from a favorite customer, Flex Interconnect Technologies. Like so many fabricators trying to care for their staff during these trying times, they were looking at a way to invest into professional development of their staff by providing three morning workshops . The training consisted of design decisions that affect fabrication producibility, reliability and yield . The class progressed into subjects that covered material science properties and how to get the best results from the best material.
FLEX INTERCONNECT'S STAY-AT-HOME MASK CONTEST

The final day's class covered subjects ranging from (HDI) High-Density Interconnect to EMI and other customer solutions . The big surprise when I showed up to teach on the third day, was that I discovered I had the honor of being the guest judge of a stay-at-home face mask contest . This was such a creative idea that showed what a great company does to esteem their team as an asset, invests in their training, and creates a great place to work!

ILC-PF - Focus Tech's Phosphoric Free Inner Layer Pre-clean
Manufacturers are continuing to drive phosphorus out of their manufacturing process . ILC-PF allows you to get excellent surface cleaning and chromate removal of your inner layers before dryfilm lamination while eliminating phosphoric acid.

The proprietary formulation also creates better adhesion between the dryfilm and the copper than typical cleaners . This can be very helpful especially on shinny foil product. This is not a micro-etch so it ideal for maintaining a smooth copper surface for high speed and RF applications.
Focus Tech Making Hand Sanitizers to Help Meet Demand
As a result of the COVID-19 health crisis, the FDA has relaxed regulations controlling who can manufacture and market hand sanitizers . The US Department of Health and Human Services has released guidelines for the manufacture of OTC hand sanitizers that can be sold to the general public.

Manufacturers that register their facility and all hand sanitizer packaging with the FDA will be allowed to produce and sell hand sanitizers to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 . Manufacturers must produce a specific formula provided in the FDA guidance. This formula does not contain any aloe vera gel or thickeners so the resulting product is very watery and non-viscous.

Automated Chemical Solutions (makers of Focus Tech brand process chemicals) has registered with the FDA and has started producing hand sanitizer in their Phoenix, AZ production facility . Raw materials and packaging are all in very tight supply.

Smaller bottles in the 6-16 ounce range with dispensing caps are backordered into the summer. ACS has been able to secure some bottles but will also be offering their AutoSan HS Hand Sanitizer in 1-gallon jugs, 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums. Please contact your Insulectro inside sales person for pricing and availability.

The People Behind the Puma
Meet Brandon Heller
Inside Sales Manager, Insulectro Bloomingdale IL
BIO:
I grew up in IL and moved to Iowa and then to Colorado where I joined Insulectro over 6 years ago in the warehouse as a JIT specialist. I transitioned to the ISM role a few years after that. My family moved back to Illinois in 2018 where we currently reside in the small farming town of Geneseo.

Brandon is a corn-fed Midwesterner.

Are you sheltering at home during the pandemic or working from our distribution center? How has self-isolation affected the way you do your job?  I have been working from home so this is nothing new for me.

What are the challenges you have faced servicing our customers? Have you learned any new techniques that you might continue to use when this is past us?  Change has been challenging. COVID-19 has changed everything we do and that sometimes includes how our customers do business. I’ve learned that a simple “How are you guys doing over there?” during a phone call about material can turn into a 20 min conversation. You can learn a lot about someone on a personal level and their business during those 20 minutes.

Personally, how has sequestering impacted you and your daily routine?  No changes really except I take vitamin C in the mornings.

Do you cook your meals or rely on home delivery?  I cook our meals, I think we have ordered delivery once in the in the last three weeks.

What do you do to occupy your free time? Hobbies? Books? Binge watching?  I do chores and work on things around the house. It seems like there is always something that needs fixing. We have a small hobby farm and sell sweet corn during the summer.

How are you keeping in touch with your teammates?  Microsoft Teams, email and the old fashioned telephone.

In the pre-pandemic days, what was your favorite way to blow off steam after a busy week?  That hasn’t changed, a soak in the hot tub with a cocktail.

If your could travel anywhere, right now, safely, where would you go?  A cross country trip out west in my van to visit some of the National Parks. I want to see Yellowstone and Yosemite.
If a movie was made about you, what movie star would play Brandon?  Eric Christian Olsen. I don’t know him either but people have said I look like him.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?  I’m sure there is something but I’d rather not relive it here.

If you were a jungle animal, what would you be and why?   A bat, because I would be pretty safe from people for a while.

If you won the lottery, what would you do next?  Pay off bills, buy a few cars and more land.

What do you like the most about your customers?  How different they are.

At work, what makes a day a great day for you?  Anytime we did something that the customer is really happy with. That and promo sales.

When you were a child, what did you want to grow up to be?  A soccer player.

Favorite music and why?  Older music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. They don’t write tunes like they used too.
What is it about you that would most surprise your teammates?  I’m a DeadHead, and by that I mean I really like the band The Grateful Dead. I was born years too late, Weir everywhere!

What advise would you give a new person coming into the Insulectro family?  Listen to others, learn from your mistakes and have a positive attitude. You’ll be just fine.

Name three things you’d have to have if marooned on a desert island?  A knife, rope, and a Firestarter. It would be all about survival at that point right?

What would be the first sentence of your autobiography?  I’m not sure how that sentence would end but it would start with “Brandon’s wife was a saint…”
