A Note from the Head of Finance & Business ...

Re-enrollment is Open!

Happy February Crossroads Parents & Constituents,

This year has been an exciting one filled with new possibilities and challenges – for both the students and us alike! We have had the privilege of welcoming many new students this school year and proudly transitioning those ready to move on to the next phase of their educational growth.

As we look ahead to the 2020-2021 school year, it is that time when we are delighted to open up re-enrollment to our currently enrolled families. Our parents will receive an offer of re-enrollment as well as a tuition agreement via email this coming week. The deadline for our current families to secure a place for their child(ren) in the 2020-2021 school year is Monday, March 23rd . Open enrollment to the public will begin on Tuesday, March 24th and enrollment information will be sent out via email and posted on our website  www.crossroadshouston.org

Please don’t forget to visit the SSS Family Portal at https://sss.secure.force.com/familyportal to apply for financial aid. You can also visit Your Tuition Solution at https://www1.yourtuitionsolution.com/family for 3rd party financing options for your Crossroads tuition.

It is an honor to be the school of choice for our current families and we look forward to seeing many new (and familiar) faces in the 2020-2021 school year!

TEAM CROSSROADS
in memory of Ms. Patti-Brown

The next Team Crossroads event will happen on March 7, 2020! Staff, students, and friends of Crossroads can participate in a race at 7 a.m. on March 7th at Minute Maid Park. (There are 10K, 5K and 1K options.) This will be the third event in which Ms. Azmae is coordinating Team Crossroads' participation this year!

Last December, our beloved teacher, Ms. Patti-Brown, ran in the Team Crossroads 5K in Sugarland. This next race, Team Crossroads will participate in her memory. All of our donations for this race will be in her honor.

Our fundraiser goal for this event is $5,000. 93% of the donations raised for the race will come directly back to the school.

The race takes place at Minute Maid Park on March 7. Click the link below to donate or join the team. Staff, parents, students and alumni are all encouraged to join.

Cooking Club

This week we learned about Spanish culture by making a traditional tapas treat: patatas bravas (spicy potatoes). While the bite-sized potato chunks were roasting in the oven, everyone gathered around the stove to help measure and stir ingredients for our outstanding bravas sauce. Students crushed garlic, added onions and tomatoes, poured vegetable broth, and sprinkled smoky paprika, then patiently waited until the sauce thickened enough to pour over the potatoes. Everyone raved about the flavorful little morsels, and couldn’t wait to try cooking them again at home! On Wednesday, our Superstar-Doubleday Cooking Club student made another tapas favorite: prosciutto and Manchego cheese toast skewers. Buen provecho!
Positivity Project - Being Present

This week's positivity project characteristics were being present in the moment and giving others your undivided attention. We discussed the definitions of, and behaviors that show, how to be present and a good listener in social skills class this week. Being present means being aware of what people are currently dealing with and helping when you can. It also includes listening to others, being grateful for what you have and being grateful for the current moment in time.  The students worked on keeping their attention focused on whoever was speaking to them and keeping good eye contact. We also discussed another good indicator of listening which is nodding your head to show the other person that you are following along with the conversation. Additionally, the students learned about some physical actions that can go along with good listening. These included listening with your ears, watching with your eyes, keeping your lips closed, keeping your hands still and keeping your feet settled. The students watched videos that showed positive and negative examples of being present and good listening. We coupled the videos with an activity where students were read a list of instructions and they had to practice their listening skills by carrying out the specific instructions.
