Orchard Update
Before
After

So the birds ate all of the apples from one of our trees, and many from the other. Although we only have a few dozen peaches on our tree, I am determined not to lose them to critters. My friend, Heather, suggested that we cut up nylon stockings to cover and protect them until they ripen. Seems to be working.

My first and only harvest of apples.
Come Cook With Me

I will be offering a cooking demonstration today at 3:00 at the Choke Cherry Tree in Pagosa Springs. We would love to have you come out and join us. Should be fun!
Harvest Time
When the harvest begins to roll in and fruits and veggies are stacking up, one needs to get creative on what to do with the bounty. I have been very busy canning, baking, and drying. Some methods can be lots of fun, others pretty labor intensive.

So the long and the short is this - growing your own food sure makes food in the grocery look mighty cheap. But the satisfaction of knowing that you grew it yourself, and that it is clean and safe, makes it all worth it.
Apple juice. Also made chokecherry and grape juice.  Yummm!
Wild Petunias

We have had some wild petunias spring up here and there on the ranch this year. They are absolutely stunning - such a bright pink. Each plant is about 3 foot wide and a couple feet tall. What a sweet blessing.
This Year's Crop

These are the animals that will go into the beef program from now till the end of the year. In spite of our lack of rain the cattle are doing well. Our irrigation water was turned off the middle of August in Arboles. We've had a few soft rains since but sure could use more. Hoping for a good snowfall this winter to get the grass going next year.

New calf born just the other day. Lisa still has some irrigation water in Pagosa.
These are some of the cows and calves at the lease in Pagosa.

In Closing . . .
Our friends, Cruz and Sandy Muir, have this sign at the entrance to their home.  You just have to love country people. No shame. Don't even know about political correctness. God love them! What a great country this is.

The night before our grandson was to take his pigs to the county fair a bear got into the pen and killed them all. Shocking, and SO sad. Allan called the state wildlife officer when he found them in the morning, who in turn called the state trapper. He showed up that night with dogs, and lots of help, and harvested him. While we felt badly to have to eliminate a bear, the thought that he might attack one of the grandkids was enough to put those regrets to rest.

We are in the beginning stages of remodeling our house. New windows, new wainscoting, a new front porch, and new paint. I'll show some pictures when it's done. Right now it is just a mess. We nailed a piece of wood across the front door so that the grandkids could not possibly fall out. Allan and I are both so excited to be making these improvements. We hope to move on to the inside this winter, until the money runs out. Which could be sooner than later.

Guess I don't need to tell you that this year is spinning by. So much happening, so much to be thankful for. Just know we are grateful for all of you, and hope you had a wonderful summer. May God bless you abundantly.
Lois & Allan
