President's Message
The past month was a little quieter in terms of ACVR news, which gives me the opportunity for a little refresher on the inner workings of ACVR administration. Prior to sitting on Council, I sometimes had trouble understanding what channel to use for information and the decision-making process could seem a little “radiopaque”. So, here goes…!

Who is Council? Council is made up of elected and administrative ACVR members. Elected positions are 3 years, at which time the counsellor can be re-elected to serve the 3-year presidency cycle. The Radiation Oncology President/President-Elect and Equine Diagnostic Imaging President are also on council. In addition, the longer term administrative positions (Executive Director, Treasurer, Webmaster, Secretary, etc…) and Examination and Education Directors provide essential input around the Council table. An updated list of council members can be found here.

When are things discussed and decided upon? Most major discussions are held twice a year, in the spring and fall . There are 2 spring Council meetings, one in March by phone and another in person in April. In the fall, there is phone meeting in September and an in person meeting at the beginning of the Annual Scientific Meeting in October. Minor decisions and votes are sporadically held via email throughout the rest of the year.
If you are curious about Council decisions/discussions, all meeting agendas can be found on the website , and include the previous meeting’s minutes. You can also reach out to one of us, we’ll be happy to get you the information you need.

In other words…we are currently preparing our spring meetings. So, if you have any topics or concerns that you would like to bring to Council’s attention, now is a great time to do so!

What about committees? What are they up to? Committees are created by ACVR Council to manage certain tasks (i.e. examinations, grants, residency standards, MOC) or to provide input/support (i.e. Public Relations, Radiation Protection, Consensus Statements). There are currently around 20 committees doing a ton of great work on behalf of the ACVR. For a complete list, see here:

At spring/fall meetings, Council reviews each committee’s activities. Following the bi-annual meetings, Council “charges” specific assignments to each committee Chair, who completes these with committee members within the following months. The Chair then reports back on committee activities and requests Council input on any changes, suggestions, etc. This cycle of communication between Council and committees continues twice a year every year. More and more committees have a Co-Chair to ensure continuity from year-to-year and prevent valuable information falling through the cracks.

Each committee also has Policies and Procedures to follow throughout the year. If you would like to know more committee specifics, you can find the information here .

How about Societies? Societies are self-created and then approved by ACVR Council. Similar to committees, societies also report to and from council twice per year, to exchange input and receive support. Instead of a Chair, societies are managed by their own small council (President, Secretary, etc…). Otherwise, they work fairly independently.

I have a question/concern/suggestion, who do I approach? It depends, but there is definitely someone who can get you the information you need! You can address your question to me at kalexander@centredmv.com , another Council member or the Executive Director. We will answer or forward it to the right person. You can also reach out to the Chair of that particular subject, i.e.: “ I’d like to start a residency…who do I ask? ” That would be a great question for the Chair of RSEC. The list of Council and committee members is updated annually on the ACVR website .

Who’s that Executive Director guy? The Executive Director (currently Dr. Tod Drost…woot! woot!) and other administrators (Treasurer, Webmaster, Secretary, etc…) basically keep the wheels turning on any number of things that need to happen every year (i.e. ACVR Calendar, meeting sites, examination applications, budget, etc…) and keep track of decisions that council has made. This ensures continuity while elected members rotate on and off council. Also, we could not do all of this without the awesome support of our PAMED staff!

I’d like to be involved…who do I ask?  You can reach out to anyone on Council, but the Chair of the Nominating Committee is the best person to approach if there is a Committee assignment that interests you. Right now, that person is Dr. Nathan Nelson .

Hopefully this little primer is helpful to some of you who are wondering what we are up to!

One other thing! Don’t wait for the newsletter to hit your inbox…check out the regular News feature on the website … among other things, ZEWDIS is now up and running, so sign up and check out the cool hippopotamus CT!

Maintenance of Certification Update
Hello all,

In the transition to the new website, some functions of the old site, mainly MOC, did not transfer as nicely as we expected. Some folks have their MOC running perfectly. Others, not so much. It has to do with any differences in username between registration on the new site and the old site. Now that we have figured that out, we are faced with the decision to either work on each person who still does not have access...OR, junk the whole thing, and consider working with a new program. Since MOC is still a relatively young initiative in our college, the possibility of starting from scratch is still on the table.

That will be a topic for the Executive Council meeting in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we ask that you maintain your own records for MOC. Once the program of choice has been decided, I will update you. I am sorry for any issues this may have caused.

If you have any questions or comments about MOC or the new website in general, please contact me.

Thanks,
