Principal's Pen
I hope everyone enjoys your long weekend! We are excited to see you all at Back-to-School Night next week, September 6, at 6:30 pm. I have the schedule below. Class meetings, K-3, will be rotated in 20 minute rounds. ELC families will start with their ELC classes first. The 4-8 grades will also do 20 minute rounds, spending 6-7 minutes with each teacher. Specials teachers will meet as a whole from 7:20-7:40 and from 7:40-8:00. We hope that this allows families with multiple students to attend all classes.

Schedule :
6:30-6:50- Full Assembly in gym with Mrs. Jennings
6:55-7:15- 1st round
7:20-7:40- 2nd round/Specials teachers

Our School Utilizes
Love and Logic™ Skills

Many of you parents already know the Love and Logic™ model of parenting. Many of our teachers already use Love and Logic™ principles in classroom situations. We have begun and will continue the formal training of all our teaching staff. Since August of 2014, our staff has been working to understand the Love and Logic™ model of classroom management through professional training. Our School Counselor, Jack Lipski, is a Certified Love and Logic™ Instructor. This training will mean adopting the principles or core beliefs of Love and Logic™ that work to individualize how teachers handle each unique student in different situations.  Check out the Parent/Student Handbook or go our school website under "Discover" then "A Love and Logic School." These core beliefs are very much in keeping with our Christian values and goals here at Shepherd. We realize that a "one size fits all" approach to discipline isn't the best...just as a "one size fits all" teaching style isn't the best.

We want to maintain the dignity and self-respect of both the student and the teacher. Students will be expected to solve the problems they create without causing problems for others. We want to help you parents raise responsible kids!  (Sometimes, they might need some ideas from teachers as to how to solve these problems.) We want to give students the opportunity to learn from their mistakes in preparation for the real world. We believe mistakes are powerful learning tools that are often unused by parents and teachers.

In the coming newsletters, we will be explaining more of our movement at Shepherd toward becoming a school that uses Love and Logic™ techniques. We're excited; we hope you are too!

Jack Lipski, School Counselor, and certified Love and Logic™ Instructor
