PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE presidentmessage
Dear Colleagues:

Dr. Kevin HausslerIt was a pleasure to meet with some of you during the World Veterinary Rehabilitation Summit sponsored by the college in conjunction with the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians in Knoxville, Tennessee. The quality of research abstracts and presentations was very good. There was also a day of laboratories that was well-received by those participating in the program.

The International Association for Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy program brought together veterinarians, veterinary technicians, undergraduate animal rehabilitation students and faculty, and physical therapists with interests in animal health care. There was a wide spectrum of presentations, and members of ACVSMR were well represented. I was reminded again of all the different groups of people across professions that are trying to come together to provide quality care for our animal patients. It is important as we move forward in our college development that we seek out channels of communication and cooperation with the different groups to help form a cohesive network of professionals working together to advance the field of veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Please mark your calendars for the ACVSMR annual meeting to be held in conjunction with ACVS in Phoenix, Arizona on October 26, 2018.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know or contact one of the ACVSMR board or committee members.

Regards,
Kevin Haussler_s signature

ACVSMR at the World Veterinary Rehabilitation Summitworldrehabsummit

ACVSMR started off the World Veterinary Rehabilitation Summit with pre-summit laboratories on July 30, 2018. Dr. Steve Adair offered a laboratory on Equine Neurologic Rehabilitation with participants learning valuable techniques and tools for horses with neurologic disorders. In addition Drs. Sherman and Debra Canapp held their Canine Sports Medicine Workshop where students gained valuable exposure to regenerative medicine, needle arthroscopy, and ultrasound.

On July 31, ACVSMR, in collaboration with the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians, organized a fantastic lecture series with more than 135 people in attendance from around the globe. The ACVSMR track started off the day with the presentation of original research by ACVSMR Diplomates and residents. Three equine and three canine abstracts were presented. The scientific abstract awards were sponsored by SpectraVet, enabling us to reward the abstract winners for their hard work and support their travel to the meeting.

Bimeda logoFollowing the presentation of the abstracts, Dr. Hilary Clayton delivered the keynote address to all session attendees, discussing, comparing, and contrasting gait biomechanics across species. Bimeda generously sponsored the keynote address.

Indiba Animal Health logo
For the afternoon sessions, we broke out into a species-specific series of talks. In the canine session, sponsored by Piezowave Vet, Dr. Bess Pierce and Dr. Dana Whitlock focused on the canine athlete with some in-depth review of the myofascial network, muscle physiology, and maintenance of the athlete. In the equine session, sponsored by Indiba, Dr. Hilary Clayton and Dr. Jane Manfredi delivered lectures focusing on biomechanics, equipment fit, and its impact on equine performance as well as rehabilitation strategies for equine patients.

Help Build a Resource Library for Veterinary Students! library

The public relations committee of ACVSMR is hoping to develop sports medicine and rehabilitation student clubs in veterinary schools. We are conducting a survey of all U.S. veterinary schools and are planning to establish contact with advisors of existing clubs. In addition, we will be reaching out to faculty at the remaining schools offering assistance in developing student clubs.

For our organization to be most beneficial to these student clubs, we are now requesting that ACVSMR diplomates help us to create a library of resource materials. These can include case reports (canine and equine), webinars, and videotapes of clinical conditions with diagnosis, etc. We will make these resources available to student club advisors for use in club meetings, crediting those who have supplied the resources.

We expect interest to be high and are hoping that you will support us in this effort by helping to build our library. Please contact Dr. Linda Blythe, linda.blythe@oregonstate.edu. Thank you!
