The Importance of Ritual and Tradition

Mrs. Gelbart dropped off the senior tiles this morning: another splash of color to adorn my office for a few weeks until they get formally presented to the school by the Class of 2018 at Closing Ceremonies. The tradition of seniors designing and painting small ceramic tiles representing something about themselves or their time as Huskies has been going for 25 years now: just one of the traditions and rituals that has grown up in a still relatively young school.
What else do we do that is uniquely Husky?
  • We meet together as one community-all students and teachers-each Monday morning, to share news and stories, to hear what's coming up in the week, and to recite the Husky Pledge.
  • Each student delivers a short speech to the school during his/her senior year (see Ian Grindle's below). The only guideline is to talk about something meaningful to themselves. They share humor, heartbreak, family, and school stories. We laugh, we cry, we applaud.
  • The school year itself begins with the student council president banging the giant gong (a senior gift from the class of 2008), and the year ends with a ritual sounding of the same gong.
  • And senior gifts themselves? Gifts from each senior class abound on campus: basketball hoop, fish pond, shade structure, electronic marquee, road sign, brick walk, bell, fountain, ceramic sign and dozens of others.

These and many other rituals and traditions grow up gradually with a school and become part of the Husky experience. They are important to the fabric of life on campus and lend yet another layer of meaning to "Once a Husky . . . always a Husky."

A Message From The Advocates for Diversity Club

The Advocates for Diversity (AFD) club is starting an initiative to help students learn how to be good advocates/allies on campus with the "I Am Message." The purpose is to give students a voice (anonymously) in situations where they might feel offended and uncomfortable confronting when they see or hear something derogatory against a specific group (race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, class, ability, etc) whether it was towards you, a friend, or just someone around you. We will read these for you during morning meeting to help create a safe and inclusive environment for all.

Click the button below for the anonymous form. It is a way of having your voice heard in hopes to end inappropriate and derogatory comments and/or activity on campus. Bookmark this form in case you ever want to fill one out. Thank you in advance for your participation.

The launch of the McCormack Fund for Financial Aid honors Peter's commitment to making our schools more accessible to a broader spectrum of students, enhancing the experience of every student as we prepare them for an increasingly diverse and complex world.

In addition to being featured as the "fund a need"  at this year's "British I nvasion" gala online giving options are also available as of today.
The lin k below will direct you to the video, as well as the opportunity to purchase tickets to "British Invasion," donate gala items, or to make a gift to The McCormack Fund for Financial Aid. We look forward to seeing you May 5th at the Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach.

Nicole Bishay

" Before I transferred, school had never been something that I had looked forward to other than the fact that I got to see my friends, but over the past two years, I have formed an appreciation for learning and I know it is because I'm surrounded by people who are so passionate about their jobs and about teaching us. Transferring to RHP is one of the best decisions that I've ever made. From being here, I have learned how to accept and even embrace change and I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity."

Ian Grindle

" The lesson here is that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Just because the cover of a book is the first thing you see doesn't mean you shouldn't open it. What I want you to take away from this is that you should not judge someone based off your first impressions. You should actually get to know something about them first."

The all-school art show was an enormous success on Thursday evening. It was a great opportunity for the Husky community to appreciate all the wonderful artists on campus.

Senior Ervin Whitfield was named a Student of the Month by the San Pedro Rotary Club. Ervin is a member of the National Honor Society and a star of the varsity baseball team. Outside of school he serves as Treasurer for the local youth branch of the NAACP and on the youth arts council for the City of Carson.

Middle School Boys' Volleyball played a great game against Country Day on Thursday.
