BOARD HONORS WINNERS IN HART's 2018 HIGH SCHOOL POSTER CONTEST

A dozen high school artists were recently chosen as the winners of HART's 2018 High School Poster Contest, and during its April meeting, the HART Board of Directors was pleased to recognize the group. The students competed in four categories, and the top three in each received award certificates and prize packs by HART's Executive Director Andrew Robbins and Board Chair Damien Kim. This year's contest highlighted HART's sustainability initiatives with the theme, "Sustainable Transit: Green My Ride."

The 2018 Poster Contest drew twice as many entries as last year, and nearly double the number of participating schools.

HART would like to send a big mahalo to this year's contest sponsors and partners: Royal Contracting, Hawaiian Electric, Shimmick/Traylor/Granite Joint Venture, Nan, Inc., Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, and the Hawaii State Library System.

HART OHANA DONATES  NEARLY
A TON OF FOOD IN SUPPORT
HAWAII FOODBANK MONTH!

Administrators Janelle Tanna (left) and Robin Maunakea (right) coordinated
HART's collection efforts during this year's annual food drive
to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank .

Under a proclamation by Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell, April is designated as Hawaii Foodbank Month and once again, the employees of the City & County of Honolulu have stepped up to help make the annual food drive a success.  In marking the 28th Annual Food Drive event, members of the HART Ohana did their part by contributing three-quarters of a ton in food donations.

Thanks to the efforts of drive coordinators Janelle Tanna and Robin Maunakea, HART's month-long food drive collected everything from canned goods to hundreds of pounds of rice, all destined to help needy families across Hawaii.

JOIN THE HART TEAM IN HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF "EARTH DAY"

Join the HART Team tomorrow, Saturday, April 21 from 9am-noon at the Neal S. Blaisdell Park in Aiea.   In a collective effort with students and the community, we will chalk "blue lines" to mark the sea level rise exposure areas around Hawaii. The Blue Planet Foundation will provide the chalk and all other supplies as we draw the line on climate change!

It's all part of the Blue Line Project, a locally powered movement to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change.

Besides being the centerpiece of Honolulu's multi-modal transportation network, the Honolulu Rail Transit Project will also be one of the key components in helping Hawaii to reach its renewable energy goals, and will help lessen Honolulu's carbon footprint.

The Blue Line Project is just one of many sustainability events in which HART is participating this month. It's all part of "Earth Month," and in our next eNews edition, we'll have a rundown of those events.

RAIL TRANSIT IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT THE
40th FIRST HAWAIIAN INT'L AUTO SHOW
HART at the 40th First Hawaiian International Auto Show
HART at the 40th First Hawaiian
International Auto Show
The Honolulu Rail Transit Project was front and center at the recent First Hawaiian International Auto Show. The annual event draws an estimated 40,000 people to the Hawaii Convention Center with thousands stopping by the HART information booth, making it one of the largest educational events on the HART calendar.

Visitors were treated to a video tour of the trains and a look at some of the rail cars' amenities. Also on display was a fly-over video view of the 20-mile project, video renderings of the 21 stations across the alignment, and station & train models.

The event was a great success with visitors getting an up-close look at and learning the many benefits of the Rail Project.

READ THE LATEST PROGRESS REPORT ON THE HONOLULU RAIL TRANSIT PROJECT!

Each month, the HART Board of Directors receives a comprehensive report on the current status of the rail project.  The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation believes it is essential to keep the public up-to-date on the project. Therefore, each monthly report is open for public review.

APRIL IS TSUNAMI AWARENESS
MONTH IN HAWAII

GET THE FACTS TO KEEP YOU
AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE!

As there are with hurricanes, there is no season for tsunamis. But like hurricanes, tsunamis can cause catastrophic damage and sometimes, with little or no warning.

Hawaii's geographic position in the middle of the Pacific makes the state extremely vulnerable to the threat of tsunamis. And although, depending on location, an earthquake-triggered tsunami can take several hours before it impacts our shores, officials urge people not to wait until a tsunami advisory is issued before taking action. Now is the time to plan and prepare for the next tsunami.

According to HI-EMA, be advised that:
  • Tsunami waves may keep coming for hours, with waves arriving every 10 minutes to one hour apart. The first wave may not be the largest.
  • Tsunamis travel as fast as a jet airliner (approximately 500 mph) in the deep ocean with waves only a few inches high.
  • As tsunamis approach the shore they slow down but increase dramatically in height. Tsunamis strike with devastating force and quickly flood all low-lying coastal areas threatening life and property. Historically, locations in Hawaii have been flooded with water more than 30 feet deep.
  • Tsunamis are usually caused by shallow, undersea earthquakes.
  • Tsunamis are less frequently caused by underwater volcanic eruptions, landslides, slumps, and meteorites.  Homes and small buildings are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts.
The City & County of Honolulu and the Department of Emergency Management has put together a list of facts and important information about tsunamis and tsunami preparedness, click here to view.
