Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

August 12, 2018
|
Please welcome The Reverend Karen Egerton who will preside
at our service this Sunday.
A Brief Bio:
I began seminary when the youngest of my four daughters
was finishing high school. I graduated from Sewanee Seminary
in 2003 and joined the staff of a large church in Winter Park,
Florida where I supervised the school, the pastoral care
department, assisted in worship and had the opportunity to
regularly preach and celebrate. All Saints had an active healing
ministry and I became regularly involved with it. After my time
at All Saints I became an interim rector, did supply around the
diocese of Central Florida, and began to occasionally write for
Bible Reading Fellowship.
I am officially retired but help with
my Orlando parish when
I'm home. Summers, Charlie and I
enjoy the island and have
made many new friends. When here
we attend St. Brendan's.
It is an honor to be asked to supply.

Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost:
We continue to hear Jesus' discourse on the bread of life today. Continuing last week's theme of Jesus himself as the source of nourishment for our new life in him, a further level of meaning is introduced. This was astounding to Jesus' hearers (and would be to us if we were not already so used to it), for he is not simply speaking of a "spiritual" communion with him. He is speaking of his own flesh, his own life. He is the food of eternal life.
The first reading tells of Elijah the prophet fleeing through the wilderness. He is starving and begs God to let him die. But God instead provides food for him in the wilderness and Elijah is able to complete his pilgrimage to the mount of God.
Today's reading from the Letter to the Ephesians continues from last week's discussion of our unity in the Spirit, to the new way of living which is the result of that unity, and to its deepest and most profound implication: namely, our new life is one identity, both as individuals and as a people, with Jesus himself. What he is, we are becoming.
In the Eucharist we take the material things of this world and, in giving thanks over them, we offer them to be taken up into the life of God. And this is true also of our selves who are represented by the bread and wine. We are part of a people whose story goes back to the ancient Hebrews: a people who have at the center of our existence God calling us to be bearers of the divine presence in the world.

Icon of St. Brendan by Siri Beckman
Lord, we will trust you.
Help us to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.
Give us the faith to leave old ways and break new ground with you.
Christ of the mysteries, we trust you to be stronger than each storm
within us.
We will trust in the darkness and know that our times are in your hand.
Tune our spirit to the music of heaven, and somehow, make our obedience count for you.
-Prayer attributed to St. Brendan
