Build An Adventure
The Science of Scouting

The end of summer and start of fall is a magical time.  Social media is full of postings with photos of eager children starting the adventures of a new school year.  Likewise the fall represents the start of the Scouting year for many units.  Now is the time to invite new families to join in Scouting Adventures.

As parents and leaders we see first hand the way that Scouting helps boys become young men and young men become adults of character.  Many of us are so passionate that we spend countless hours volunteering and supporting our Scouts. We need to share our passion and beliefs with the families in our social networks and communities.  Tell your Scouting story to those around you and invite them to experience Scouting first hand.

As part of our fall membership campaign we work diligently to make Scouting available to more youth.  We invite you to be our partner in this effort.  As a small token of appreciation for new youth joining Scouting in August and September we are providing a Crystal Growing Kit (pictured above) to each new Cub Scout youth.  These kits are available at your local Council Service Center and can be picked up when turning in youth registration paperwork.  The Crystal Growing Kit is part of are larger "The Science of Scouting" fall membership theme.

What's new in Lions for 2017-2018?
  • Pack meetings and activities will be open to Lion families who want to participate. Lion families said they wanted more pack involvement, and now they have the option of being included in program, skits, and more.
  • Pinewood Derby open to Lions. Packs have three recommended options for implementing this:
    1. Integrate into the pack Derby with other Cub Scouts.
    2. Use the wedge car from the Scout Shop to eliminate cutting.
    3. Have Lions participate in a Veggie Car Derby, where potatoes and cucumbers replace wood blocks.
  • Fundraising will be allowed as a family option. Although they don't want mandatory levels of funds to raise, Lion families indicated they do want to have the option to raise funds. Spring fundraising is encouraged. If popcorn is sold by Lions, a show-and-sell approach where older boys and parents are also present is preferred. Door-to-door selling would only be appropriate if the parent is by the youth's side.
  • Uniform T-shirt won't change, but families can buy button-down if they want. Parents and boys love the required Lion T-shirt and optional cap. But this change allows families to buy official blue Cub Scout button-down shirts and blue pants as desired for special occasions and pack ceremonies.
  • A Lion-specific page in Boys' Life. Parents can use this great resource to help unlock the world of reading for their child.
The little team that did!
Congratulations to the Culver City Police Department's Explorers. This weekend, for the first time ever, they competed in the "Battle of the Badges" Police Explorer competition. This event is the largest annual regional competition of its kind in Los Angeles County and beyond.
In total, 24 teams were signed up with many teams having double the amount of competitors. We were the smallest team with only 5 Explorers competing. The Explorers were put through a timed obstacle course along with 12 patrol related scenarios. These scenarios included DUI investigations, burglary in progress, domestic disputes, suspicious persons, vehicle assaults, officer ambush, high risk warrants, marijuana field investigations, felony traffic stops, CSI, and active shooters. The event lasted 12 hours with temperatures reaching 108 degrees.
During the award ceremony, our Explorers received 6 trophies for placing within the top five for the 12 individual scenarios. Additionally, they placed second overall, topping 23 out of the 24 teams.
Great job guys!!!!!

Tennis meets Scouting.

WLACC Partners with the Southern California Tennis Association.

The SCTA's pilot Outreach Tennis program, which was rolled out in February, shares these values. With the help of SCTA Tennis Service Representatives and TGA Premier Tennis coaches, we have implemented an ongoing program at Casa Esperanza, North Valley Caring Services, and O'Melveny Elementary School. Through the game of tennis, we are able to engage the boys, teach them tennis basics, all while having a great time.

What does an Outreach tennis session look like? With the use of portable equipment specifically designed for kids, coaches can run the program just about anywhere, be it a classroom, playground or basketball court. The racquets pop up nets and "courts" are smaller and the balls are larger. This combination of modified equipment allows the young players to handle the racquet with greater ease, in addition to making contact with the ball more consistently. The coaches work with the boys on drills and instructional games.

At the close of the Outreach tennis sessions in May, each participating Scout will get their own racquet to take home. It is the hope that we have given the Scouts the gift of tennis for a lifetime.
