Message from Dr. Spurka
A Time to Celebrate
This time of year is one of the busiest but also one of my favorite!  Next week we will start our testing season, and it is hard to believe that graduation will be here soon!  I am very proud that each spring we take time to celebrate the accomplishments of our school and our amazing students.  This week we were recognized as an outstanding high school due to our students' performance in AP courses as well as our overall participation.  We are very proud that Cambridge High School has been named an AP Merit School for having 20% of our students participate in at least one AP course, as well as an AP STEM School, and an AP Humanities School.  Cambridge was also named an AP STEM Achievement School for having over 40% of our students taking an AP course score a three or better on the exam.

The celebration only begins there!  Over the next week, we will be celebrating the achievements of over 500 of our fantastic students. On Monday we will hold our annual Honors' Night in which students will be recognized for their academic accomplishments.  Students received invitations to Honors' Night this week.  In addition, we will recognize our VIP students in our annual VIP Breakfast ceremony on Friday, starting at 7:45 am.  Each staff member was asked to recognize one or two students who have served as positive citizens in their class and around our school. These students have had a positive impact on our teachers and are recognized as a Cambridge VIPs.  Students recognized as VIPs will receive their invitations early next week.

Our largest celebration will be when we honor and recognize the "Class of 2018" at graduation on Thursday, May 24, at 7:30 pm. There will be more information forthcoming about our graduation ceremony.

This time of year, there is more pressure and stress on our students to perform on high stakes testing and also some of our athletic programs head into state playoffs.  It is important that we not put all our focus on results of test scores or final grades, but recognize the efforts of all our students, and the progress they have made in making our high school one of the highest performing high schools in our nation.  I could not be more proud of our students, for their hard work in the classroom and their positive behavior around our school.  Go Bears!

End of Course Testing (EOC)
Week one - April 23 - 27
Next week we begin EOC testing for all students taking Economics, US History, 9th Literature, and 11th Literature. Testing dates include all classroom and online students for EOC subjects. To accommodate EOC testing this year, EOC exams will be taken before the academic day begins. The academic day will begin on a delayed start (see schedule below).

Students who are not testing are not required to be at school until the academic day begins. Buses will run on their regular schedule and students arriving before 8:20 am will report to the cafeteria. Students arriving after 8:20 am and before the end of EOC testing for that day must enter the school through the cafeteria doors. Parents/guardians dropping students off can enter through the Bethany Bend entrance and continue down the side of the building facing Kings Ridge and drop students off at the cafeteria doors. Cars should exit at the Cogburn Rd. entrance.

During testing, students cannot enter through the front doors or be in the academic halls. A limited number of passes to the Student Center will be available only through the cafeteria.

We encourage students to know where their testing location is before coming to school. For a list of all room assignments for week one, see   Student Testing. Students with accommodations should report to the room indicated on the room list. Once they report in, the proctor will give these students additional directions.

Students needing to make up an EOC will be notified of their testing time and location

Additional information regarding EOC exams:
  • All EOC exams will be administered through students' Fulton County issued Microsoft Surface. If your student was not issued a Microsoft Surface, parents/guardians must request a Surface for their student by completing a Device Checkout form. Requests must be submitted as soon as possible.
  • Students with Fulton County issued Microsoft Surfaces must have the DRC icon on their desktop. If your student does not have this icon, or if his/her Surface is not in working order, the student must take the Surface to the Student Center immediately have these issues corrected.
  • Fulton County regularly pushes updates to student-issued Surfaces. Students must restart their device to receive these updates. Failure to receive updates may interfere with the optimal operation of a student's Surface. For more information and instructions on restarting the Surface, see Tech Tips for Students
  • During peak testing times, Fulton County Schools will be limiting access to several high-volume websites that take significant bandwidth away from our network. Specifically, on April 12, 16, 18, 23 and 24, from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm FCS will be limiting access to streaming video (YouTube) district wide. By taking this preventative measure, we will preserve our network bandwidth for online testing.
Additional information regarding all testing (EOC, AP, and Final Exams) and all bell schedules can be found at Student Testing .

National Latin Exam
Cambridge Earns Top Honors

Cambridge Latin students put their knowledge of the classics, the Latin language, and Roman culture, to the test last month by competing in the National Latin Exam. These three represent the best in the nation, earning top honors among students from across the country. For their achievement, they were awarded the Summa Cum Laude certificate and the gold medal. The NLE is sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League.

Course Registration  for 2018-2019
Timeline and important dates:
April 18 Third Course Verification Form distributed to students
May 24 Final Course Change deadline

On Wednesday, April 18, students received Interim Progress Reports and 9th through 11th grade students received  third-round Course Verification Forms.  The third-round is your student's last opportunity to confirm his/her requests for next year and ensure that he/she has selected a total of six credits. If the form is correct, there is no need to return the form. Changes to the form will need to be made by April 27 . Your student should return the form to the front office.

If your student has requested to take an online course by the May 24, 2018 deadline, they must register for the online course(s) through Fulton or Georgia Virtual Schools. O nline courses cannot be requested after the May 24 deadline . Please refer to the instructions on the form for registration instructions.

Dual Enrollment courses require students to meet both the guidelines and the deadlines set-forth by both Fulton County Schools and by the dual enrollment institution of choice. A student's failure to meet any guidelines and deadlines will result in the appropriate reassignment of courses to meet graduation requirements. For more information on Dual Enrollment, please visit Cambridge Counseling

Additional resources can also be found at  www.cambridgehs.org,  "About" and "Academics." The final day to make any change to a student's courses for next year (including online) is May 24, 2018.

Device Collection
FCS Issued Surfaces
All Microsoft Surface devices will be collected in May to allow Fulton County School to perform their summer clean up of the devices. Any files saved on the Surface hard drive will be lost when the device is re-imaged. Please discuss with your child the importance of moving any important files to Cloud Storage like OneDrive. For more information, see the Tech Tip article below.

Tech Tips for Students
Technology check

Effective immediately, all students will need to restart their Surface each day
as we begi n to prepare for the April End of Course (EOC) tests.   The technology department will be sending required updates to all Fulton County devices daily, and failure to receive the updates may interfere with the optimal operation of your Surface.

If you are currently experiencing problems with your device, you will need to report the issues to the Help Desk, located in the Student Center.

Save Documents to Cloud Storage
It is a good practice to save your documents to Cloud storage like OneDrive. Saving your document allows you to access them from any device and protects against loss in case of device failure.

This summer Fulton County Schools will again perform a summer clean on all devices which means any files saved on your Microsoft Surface hard drive will be deleted. Everyone should check their Surface to ensure there are no important files that will be lost. Any important files stored in Documents, Downloads, Pictures, or Video Folders or are saved on your Desktop should be moved to OneDrive - Fulton County Schools.

If you do not see an option for OneDrive - Fulton County Schools in your File Explorer, click on OneDrive and follow the steps to link to your school account using the email, [email protected] . Come to the Student Center if you need help setting up your OneDrive access.

Fulton County student email
It is critical for all students to check their Fulton County email every day. Daily ann ou ncements, called Cambridge Headlines, are pushed to students through their email accounts that provide  information on activities, resources, and deadlines. Also, the Cambridge Administration sends important information to all students; including information on security and safety.

To access Student Fulton County email from any device:
1. Open a web browser and go to  portal.office.com
2. Log into Office 365 using:
                              Username: [email protected]
Password: birthdate (mmddyyyy) or their unique password
3. Once logged into Office 365, select the Mail app to view important email from Cambridge Headlines, teachers and staff.
4. The first time you access Office 365 Mail, you will need to select your time zone and save it.

Students should come to the Student Center to see Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Macleod, or the Help Desk if you are having problems with your Surface or you cannot access your email account.

For detailed instructions, download a step-by-step instruction guide.

Seniors
Senior check out and scholarship award information
Fulton County requires all graduating seniors to submit their post-graduation plans electronically through the Senior Check Out Form by May 4th.  The link may be found on the homepage of the Counseling website under Announcements at www.cambridgehscounseling.org or by visiting https://tinyurl.com/BearCheckOut.  If the student is not planning on attending a college next year, he/she should write one of the following on the form: work, gap year, military or any other specific plan.  Additional instructions are provided on the Senior Check Out Form.

An official FINAL transcript is required by the college a student plans to attend to verify graduation from high school. Final transcripts will be processed after the final grades are posted (tentative release date June 1st.)  The transcript needs to be requested through Parchment.com or the same online program that was used to send the initial transcript to the college for admissions (for example, Common Application, SEND Edu, or Parchment). If the final transcript is being sent to AN ORGANIZATION (Sorority, Fraternity, Scholarship, etc.) OR A PERSON, Parchment.com must be used.

As part of senior check out, Fulton County also requires students to report their total scholarship amount awarded for their duration at college, including the HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships, at https://tinyurl.com/BearScholarship .   The collective total of the senior class will be shared at our graduation ceremony.  Scholarship information must be submitted by Friday, May 4th.
