Advanced Training Summit Wrap-Up

"I liked the idea of having most of the day dedicated to one topic with all of the different disciplines represented.  This is my idea of how an advanced training should be."

That is how one participant described their experience at APSAC's Advanced Training Summit held June 21-23 in Portland Maine.  For over 300 attendees the Summit provided an opportunity for intensive training and networking.  The Summit kicked off in engaging fashion with the SAGE Charles T. Hendrix Keynote Address, "Talk to the Wood or Go to the 'Hood:" The Campaign to End Paddling in Southern Schools by Stacey Patton, PhD.  The rest of the first day consisted of advanced level workshops by some of the most highly respected trainers and practitioners from across the country.  The next two days consisted of in-depth examination and discussion on topics related to prevention, investigation and reporting, mental health treatment, medical issues and cultural implications.  The event closed with an assortment of roundtable discussions - giving participants an opportunity for small group interaction around new and emerging topics.   Watch for APSAC to continue to offer innovative and advanced opportunities for multidisciplinary training to foster professional excellence in the field of child maltreatment.

Several of our members were acknowledged at our annual award presentation for their exceptional work in the field of child maltreatment:  Dallas Children's Advocacy Center (Outstanding Service in Advancing Cultural Competency in Child Maltreatment, Prevention and Intervention); Professor David Finkelhor, PhD (Mark Chaffin Outstanding Research Career Achievement); Frank E. Vandervort, JD (Outstanding Service to APSAC); Colleen Friend, PhD, LCSW (Outstanding Professional); Linda Cahill, MD (Outstanding Frontline Professional); Laura Rena Murray (Outstanding Media Coverage); Ericka Lewis, PhD (Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation) and Charles Wilson, MSSW (Lifetime Achievement Award)     To view this year's award recipients here.

We hope to see everyone at the 25th Annual Colloquium in New Orleans,
