Meet One of our New Councilors
Zorina S. Galis, Ph.D.
Zorina is one of the founding members of NAVBO and very much looking  forward to continuing to contribute to its success in this new capacity. Zorina was trained and has worked in vascular research in the academic, industry, and government environments. She is currently the Chief of the Vascular Biology and Hypertension Branch at the National Heart Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) which she joined in 2011, after being a grantee, reviewer, and advisor .

She is recognized as a pioneer of the main paradigm emphasizing the role of inflammation in matrix and tissue remodeling during atherosclerosis. She is the main author of numerous "most read" and "most cited" publications in the area of vascular biology, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and bioengineering ( Google Scholar ). Zorina is dedicated to teaching and mentoring, and was recently recognized with the Marcus Memorial award for gifted teaching in Cardiology. Another constant has been establishing and leading successful interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, cardiology and surgical fellows, drug developers, and now of scientific research administrators. At NIH, Zorina has spearheaded innovative teams and opportunities, such as the NHLBI Vascular Interventions/Innovations and Therapeutic Advances ( VITA ) Program accelerating biomedical product development, the trans-NIH Small Vessels in Health and Disease, and the new NIH Common Fund Human BioMolecular Atlas Program ( HuBMAP ) to create a Google-like map for the human body, recently recognized with an NIH Director Award. Zorina is the proud mother of an adult son, an avid rower, urban gardener, and cultural travel enthusiast.
Vascular Biology 2018 - More Opportunities!
Did you miss the abstract deadline?
If you can submit your abstract by midnight (Eastern time) tomorrow, August 10, please do so.  http://www.navbo.org/events/vb2018/abstracts
Otherwise, never fear, we will be accepting . . .

Late-Breaking Abstracts
We will be accepting late-breaking abstracts for Vascular Biology from August 17 to September 10.  All late-breaking abstracts will be presented as posters.  These submissions will not be considered for Travel Awards, but they can be considered for the onsite Poster Award Competition. Look for an email from Bernadette when the site is reopened.
VB2018 Schedule
There is now an easy to read schedule of the meeting on the web site.  It does not yet include abstract presentations since they are currently under review.
Spotlight on Trainees
Is graduate school right for me?
The Council of Graduate Schools, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a nationwide organization dedicated exclusively to the advancement of graduate education and research. In this spirit, the CGS has prepared a short monograph, titled Graduate School and You: A Guide for Prospective Graduate Students , which aims to provide practical, straightforward advice to students who are contemplating pursuing graduate study. Last updated in 2014, the guide offers objective information on potential benefits of earning a graduate degree, the application and admissions process, and sources of financial support for graduate study. The volume is available online and also can likely be found amongst the literature in your institution's career counseling office.

New calls for papers on specialized cardiovascular topics
AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology , the American Physiological Society's flagship journal in the cardiovascular sciences, has issued a call for papers on special topics. Investigators are invited to submit manuscripts on topics of " Many Avenues to Cardiac Cell Death " (Guest Editors Drs. Kirshenbaum, Matsui, and Sadoshima), " Chromatin and Epigenetics in Cardiovascular Disease " (Guest Editors Drs. McKinsey and Vondriska), or " Adaptive Immunity in Cardiovascular Disease " Guest Editors Drs. DeLeon-Pennell, Halade, and Ilatovskaya). Submission deadlines range from January 31-February 15, 2019.

Sexual harassment in science and medicine: occurrence, costs, and countermeasures
The National Academies Press has published a Consensus Study Report, titled "Sexual Harassment of Women: Climate, Culture, and Consequences in Academic Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine," reflecting work of the Academies' Committee on the Impacts of Sexual Harassment in Academia. Over the past decades, the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady. However, as more women enter the scientific and medical workforce, more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. The report, available for download , contains a set of recommendations aimed at countering discriminatory behavior toward women and removing barriers that can limit both their careers and the advancement of critical fields.

Prenatal gene therapy advances
An international team of investigators led by Simon Waddington of University College London reports findings in Nature Medicine that raise hopes for "...prophylaxis against early, irreversible and lethal pathological change" by adapting gene therapy to use on fetal patients. The research team studied a form of Gaucher disease (nGD) associated with mutations in glucosylceramidase (Gba) . The acute childhood lethal form of nGD is untreatable since protein therapeutics cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. In a mouse Gba knockout model of nGD, fetal intracranial injection of an AAV-Gba vector reconstituted neuronal glucocerebrosidase expression and prolonged survival.
