Scripture Lesson: John 21:1-7
This Sunday
Earth Day 2018 falls on Sunday this year. At Aldersgate, Earth Day is also Mission Sunday. It's going to be a day of faith, love, health, and service for the church and the community. In faith, we will gather at 9:00am to worship, sing, and praise our God. In love, we will welcome our friends from the Islamic Center of the Eastside and from the greater community into our space and our lives with smiles, handshakes, and shared purpose. In health, we will have projects to do that encourage us to move. We will have healthy mostly plant-based food to eat that will promote health for our bodies. All our projects are also designed to begin to usher in a time of health for the planet. In service, our teams will do projects that serve God, people, and all of Creation through acts of kindness, deeds of mercy, and the promise of justice for all. On Earth Day Mission Sunday, we will consider the story of the Risen Christ from John 21:1-7 when Jesus appears to the disciples on the shore of Lake Tiberias and gives them fishing advice. We will see if there is some advice for us in there as well. Come at 9:00am for worship. Sign up to be on a service project team if you haven't already at

Earth Day Mission Sunday
Sunday, April 22 is Earth Day Mission Sunday! Thank you to those who have signed up. Sign-ups help us know how much food to have for lunch. You can still let us know you are coming by signing up online at https://goo.gl/forms/saereHFX6QZbJ9D93.
Schedule for the day
There will be one brief worship service at 9:00am. Teams of people working on Earth Day mission projects will form at 9:45am and have from 10:00am-12:00pm to work on their projects. Lunch will be served from 12:00-1:00pm. Everyone will be encouraged to eat a more plant-based lunch in honor of Earth Day, but there are specifically vegetarian and gluten-free options for those who require them.

We will have guests with us from the Islamic Center of the Eastside and from the community. If you see someone you don't know, please introduce yourself and help them find a place to work with you. Some teams may have more people than they need and other teams could use a lot more help. If you haven't yet signed up, consider joining a team that is short-handed. You won't be turned away from any team but teams that finish early will be invited to join teams that need help. We anticipate that the outdoor teams may need more help so bring some walking shoes or boots, if possible.

Days for Girls
: sewing and cutting fabric in Friendship Hall to create reusable maxi-pads for girls in communities where otherwise girls would not be able to attend school during menstruation

Birthday Bags
: gathering and packing bags with all the supplies necessary for a birthday party in the Youth Room for children whose families visit the Food Pantry
*
Stream restoration
and grounds at AUMC: remove invasive plants and plant native plants to improve stream health and habitat for fish and birds
*
Drain labeling
: walk nearby neighborhoods and apply decals supplied by the City of Bellevue to storm drains identifying them as the inlets to our streams and lakes (requires waiver of liability from City, no children under 5)
*
Park clean-up
: Litter removal at Robinswood or Enatai Beach Parks
*
Home Visits
: yard work and outreach to church members who need a hand at home
*
Lunch
: prepare, serve, and clean-up lunch for all volunteers. Lunch will be served in Smith Hall at 12:00pm for all teams.
Donations for Birthday Party Kits
Birthday Party Kits are back for Mission Sunday because EVERY child deserves to have a birthday party! When you are shopping, please consider adding a few birthday items to your shopping list to help construct birthday bags for children whose families use the Issaquah Food Bank. We are asking for donations of the following items which should be in original packaging and should be as earth friendly as possible.

Mission Celebration Sunday & NAMI Speaker
On April 29, the Sunday after Mission Sunday, we will gather again to celebrate the ways we were in service to our community, the new friends we made, and the way that God worked in us as a result of being in our mission field. We will have one blended worship service at 10:00am on April 29th.
Local Foods Lunch
After worship, there will be a Local Foods potluck lunch. Please plan to bring something to share that has ingredients local to the area within 100 miles of your home. Again in honor of Earth Day, the request is that we try to reduce the impact on the planet from our lunch by consuming foods that have been grown or raised close to home.
Guest Speaker
During lunch, we will have a speaker from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Bellevue City Council member, Janice Zahn, brought to the attention of the Core Leaders theat NAMI's need for a location to host peer support groups for members of the NAMI community. The Core Leaders thought the congregation would like to hear more about the organization and how we might be able to partner with them in their work before making any decision. As an extension of our Mission Sunday work, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to hear from them. So please plan to stay for lunch and a chance to learn more about this chance to extend our Mission into the community.

We have six youth participating in confirmation this year. Their prayer quilts are hanging in the narthex and will remain there until Confirmation Sunday on June 10th. Please say a prayer for these young people during this spiritual journey and tie a knot in their quilt. You are invited to follow along in this journey with them by reading this Confirmation Corner
This past week we talked about the fact that Jesus was born a Jew and discussed the early church and the many twists and turns it has taken. We discussed the persecution that early Christians faced, and how the church changed from being largely made up of poor and powerless people and, as it grew, it also became more powerful. We discussed how it influenced politics and became extremely wealthy and with all those things came conflict. We talked about the reformation and some of the key players. We discussed what it means to be a church that is always reforming, always in pursuit of truth and holiness. We thought about how God would like to see the church reformed today. The class came to an agreement that equality was what God wanted to see. We discussed reconciling congregations and the process Aldersgate is currently exploring. How do you think God wants us to reform the church today?

Summer Music
Calling all musicians! We are looking for any type of special music for the second service during the summer from mid-June through August. Singers & Players Needed
Do you have a hidden talent for music that you'd like to put to use? Or, maybe you know someone that doesn't come to church, but would benefit from having a place to display their musical talents for a loving and appreciative audience?
The 1st service worship band is always looking for players and singers to contribute their musical gifts, both often, and occasionally. Our biggest need at present is for a bass player and a guitarist. Seekers AND Believers are welcome. Young AND old are welcome. All that is needed is a smidgen of talent, a desire to learn and be part of a grace filled music community, and willingness to show up early on a
Sunday
morning. Practices are
on Thursday
evening.
Please help us grow by planting the bug in the ear of the musician that has not yet come forward. You could be giving THEM a gift of a lifetime.

AUMC Youth on SUMYT Exec Team
Congratulations to Bryce Swearingen who was elected Executive Director of the SUMYT Team for 2018-19. He served as Treasurer last year. Also, congratulations to Jacob Yormark who will serve as Outreach Director. Both are sophomores in high school and have been going to the SUMYT retreat since they were 6th graders. This is their third year on the SUMYT team.

Breakfast for Dinner and Board Games - Young Adult Spring Event!
Saturday, April 21st
The "At the Crossroads" young adult ministry will be hosting Breakfast for Dinner and Board Game Night at Aldersgate on Saturday, April 21. Join us at 6:30 pm for pancakes/waffles and anything else we may concoct. We will be cooking starting at 6:00 pm if you would like to be part of preparing dinner. :) There is pancake and waffle mix at the church so bring your favorite topping or side.
After dinner, we will break out into board games! This is an open and inclusive community. The goal is to create fellowship amongst Young Adults founded on the love demonstrated by Jesus Christ for all people. All are welcome so feel free to bring a friend!

Club 345 (3rd~4th~5th Grade)
Kids in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades meet once a month on Sunday evening for food and a fun activity.

Vacation Bible School
July 23-26, 2018
Aldersgate VBS 2018 will be held
July 23-26
this year. Our theme is Rolling River Rampage where we will learn to find Adventure, Acceptance, Joy, Rest, and Peace on the river of life. Registration is open! Youth Service Project
The youth have decided on a spring service project that is meaningful to them. They are collecting donations of pet supplies and money for the Seattle Humane Society from now through the end of April. The supplies needed are listed below and will be collected in a box in the narthex. Also in the narthex, the youth have posted pictures of their pets and why they love them. Please feel free to add your pet's name and why you love your pet and post its picture to the display in the narthex. Thank you for supporting this youth-directed service project. The youth will be going on a tour of the new facility at the end of this month.

Mission Trip to Lazy F
Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-27
The Church Family Mission Trip to Lazy F Camp will be on Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 25 (evening) through Sunday, May 27 (noon). There will be projects for all ages and abilities. Food and lodging is $15-$35 per person. Registration forms are available in Friendship Hall or you can register online at AUMCLazyF.org. Clothing Drive
As part of the mini mission trip to Lazy F, a crew will work at the Clothing Bank at the Ellensburg United Methodist Church. Please share with those in need by donating new and gently used, clean clothing. They have a particular need for summer clothes, women's capris and dresses, kid's shorts and tops, and any swimwear. Start cleaning out your closets now and look for the collection site in the narthex by the drinking fountain.

Rev. Dr. William Barber has revived the Poor People's Campaign of 1967-68 that was originally started by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Beginning on Mother's Day 2018, six weeks of nonviolent demonstrations are planned to help bring a message of justice and an awareness of the plight of our nation's poor people.
