Happy to Help Those in Need

Michelle Behm, one of our board members, went to visit a recipient, Patty, at her home in Farmersville. Patty was injured last year when she was thrown from her horse and sustained a C1-C2 fracture. Right after Patty left rehab, NAF was able to provide her with a specialized shower chair for her home.
Michelle was visiting her this year to deliver an iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner for Patty. With her new iRobot, Patty can set it to vacuum and she doesn't have to worry about it after that!

In the photo with Patty and Michelle is Patty's cute dog, Gretchen

Who Neuro Assistance Has been Helping Lately!

Luke, 3 years old, was born with spina bifida. Luke's insurance has denied coverage for his catheter supplies and his parents were having trouble taking on the additional expense. NAF is picking up his catheter expenses until coverage is reinstated in six to eight months.

Shane, 28 years old, was in a motor vehicle accident and sustained a T12 fracture. He is now living with paraplegia. Shane's therapist requested an Easy Stand standing frame for Shane to continue a daily standing program for his overall health when he goes home. NAF was able to provide the Easy Stand for Shane before he left rehab.

Jordan, 8 years old, has spina bifida. She lives with her parents, two brothers (7 years and 14 months) and her 4 year old sister in Garland. Jordan was in need of a Rifton HTS system to use in her bathroom and NAF was so happy to be able to provide her with the system in early September.

A Little Etiquette

Would you like to avoid being in a situation that makes you the abled bodied individual in the animation below?

When you come across an individual that is disabled, be sure to use common courtesy to make this person feel comfortable. Read below for some tips in being a spot on friend to the disabled community. And for even more information and tips visit Easter Seals Website

  • Avoid Leaning on Someone's Wheelchair: A person's wheelchair is a part of their body and personal space. Respect that.
  • When Offering Assistance, wait for an answer before acting: Some people don't want assistance, or you may need some direction. Wait to hear what would be most helpful before you start jumping to conclusions!
  • Eye to Eye Contact: When speaking to someone, make eye to eye contact. If the person is in a wheelchair, put yourself on his/her level so he/she won't get a cramp from straining to look up at your the entire time.
  • Please don't Patronize...Use a first name if that is what you are doing with everyone else. Treat adults as adults.
  • Let the Disabled Individual Set the Pace: It may take someone living with a disability a bit longer to get ready, eat, get around some place. So let them set the pace and try not to rush them.

A Small Biography of Someone Who Makes A Huge Difference

The Neuro Assistance Foundation wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for our volunteers. We are so thankful for the wonderful people who choose to invest their time in this organization with the hope of helping those in need. Take a look at Anne Wright, a sweet 17 year old who consistently takes time to volunteer for the Neuro Assistance Foundation!

My hobbies include competitive volleyball, competitive swim, athletic training, reading and traveling. I am interested in english literature, sports medicine, sociology and psychology

And my goals for the future are to maintain an A average, graduate with honors, and continue with a leadership role in the youth ministry at church.

I have volunteered at fundraising events for NAF since its inception in August of 2008. I have worked at the 5k run, walk, roll race every year because I enjoy seeing the benefit it creates for those with spinal cord injuries. I hope the  impact created by my volunteering makes a small difference. I realize how difficult it is to do everyday activities while living restricted to a wheel chair - especially given that many of these people have limited resources.  Being able to help and support these people is so important to me and I'm very proud to be a part of the foundation.

- Anne Wright

Mike Stine and 3 friends went for an overnight ride in December of 2012. About an hour into the ride Mike went down negotiating a turn and was paralyzed from the chest down.

Mike understands personally the needs others will unfortunately experience when it comes to changes of this magnitude. Wheelchairs are not covered completely by health insurance as well as cosmetic changes to one's home when presented with new way of life.

So please consider joining Mike Stine, along with Oakland A's pitcher Rick Cooper for a fun run and lunch with all tax deductible donations going to the Neuro Assistance Foundation.

If you can't join us for the ride, we'd love to have you join us for lunch!

Saturday, October 11th

Don't dive into a life-changing injury: Use common sense to stay safe in pools and lakes

The summer heat brings in the desire for a fun and relaxing afternoon in the water. There aren't many people who don't enjoy a good swim during the scorching summers. But Dr. Charles Tator has seen a number of spinal cord injuries result from a lack of good common sense.

He warns swimmers and divers to step in before diving in, especially in unfamiliar waters. To see Dr. Tator's other pieces of advice and read some examples of accidents he has seen in his life read his article "Don't dive into a life-changing injury".

The dedication to enrich and enhance the lives of the physically disabled community continues. A company, Matia Robotics, has made it their goal to develop devices which will give those who can't walk the opportunity to stand and move about through innovative technology.

"Matia Robotics is a team of expert inventors and engineers, dedicated to the creation of innovative robotic mobility devices. Since our team first came together in 2006, our goal has always been to develop technology that will help people-specifically people with walking disabilities. We designed the Tek RMD to add more freedom to the lives of individuals with paralysis, allowing them to live in places not designed for them, and to move more independently in the world".

We Need Your Help

Donate ~ Sponsor ~ Volunteer

Change lives; make a difference.

Your $25 donation will help provide clean catheters to a paralyzed child for one month when their insurance won't cover the expense.

Your $100 donation will help build a wheelchair ramp so we can get our clients out of rehab and through their front door at home.

Your $200 donation will help widen the doorways in their homes so their wheelchair can fit through the bathroom door. Insurance doesn't covers home modifications.

Your $500 donation will help provide life-changing medical equipment: wheelchairs and specialized shower chairs, etc. Most insurance only covers a small part of wheelchairs, if any, and no "bathing aids" are covered.
