CLAS Search for Director

The Office of International Affairs (OIA) has opened a call for applications and/or nominations in an internal search for the position of Director of the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS). The Director will lead CLAS as it fosters high-quality research by faculty members and students, enhances Latin American-content course offerings, and supports K-12 educators on their endeavors connected to the area. Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants Competition is open!

The Center for Latin American Studies is accepting applications from graduate and professional students for Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants. These grants provide students with funds for travel to and within Latin America to conduct pre-dissertation research. Application are due Sunday, March 1, 2020.

Call for Papers: SPPO Symposium

The graduate students of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese welcome you to take part in their 23rd Annual Hispanic and Lusophone Studies Symposium on March 20-21, 2020. They welcome traditional papers, as well as works in other formats (including performance, creative writing, and video essays, among others) dealing with any aspect of literatures and cultures in the Luso-Hispanic world. The aim is to create a collaborative environment in which we can critically discuss issues and concerns, while establishing a dialogue between time, space, subjects, theories, and practices. Abstracts are now due by January 24, 2020 and should not exceed 250 words.

2020 CLASP Junior Faculty Teaching Award

The Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) calls for nominations for its 8th annual "CLASP Junior Faculty Teaching Award". The award recognizes excellence in teaching Latin American Studies designated courses. Nominees must have the Ph.D., and they must be currently teaching at a CLASP member institution. The nominator (or self-nominator) should briefly provide clear and convincing evidence of the following:

1. Outstanding teaching effectiveness, including pedagogical style and student success stories.
2. Contributions to the Latin American Studies program and/or the Department.
3. Involvement in the wider community, including professional associations and participation in service activities.
4. Incorporation of own academic research and field experiences into the classroom.

Call for Papers: LASPP

The University of Pittsburgh's 24th Latin American Social and Public Policy Conference (LASPP) will take place on March 27-28. The call for abstracts' deadline has been extended to January 26th and the call for papers goes until February 24th and includes a broad range of topics within social sciences and humanities. They are particularly interested in the discussion of policy design, implementation, and impact in a wide array of areas, including: Economic development; inequality and social inclusion; democratic governance and institutional change; human rights; health; education; ethnicity; race studies, and so on.

Job Posting: GRA's Needed

Associate Professor Rachel Bowen is looking to hire 1-2 advanced undergraduate or graduate research assistants to help with analyzing transcripts of interviews with Central American women who have experienced violence. Applicants must be able to read Spanish fluently. Knowledge of or interest in Latin America, legal studies, or political science are desirable. Primary responsibilities will include coding interviews into NVivo software, helping to identify patterns in the interviews, and participation in biweekly team meetings. She is asking for an availability of 15 hours/week during the Spring 2020 semester. Pay is $15/hour.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: 2019-20 Area Studies Centers Conference Grant program

The Ohio State University Area Studies Centers are accepting proposals from OSU faculty members for the OIA Area Studies Centers Conference Grants program. To further develop and enhance area studies research and dialogue at OSU, this grant competition seeks proposals for conferences focusing on the study of global issues from interdisciplinary, multi-regional perspectives. Funding will support a conference that brings together area studies experts. Awards of up to $15,000 will be made for conferences taking place between August 15, 2020 and August 14, 2021. The deadline for pre-proposals has been extended through January 24, 2020.
