Happy Earth Day! In celebration, we are giving away a copy of a book that asks these questions:

Could nature be a widely available antidote to the stresses of modern life? Do fractals make us feel better? What is a fractal anyway?

The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative by Florence Williams introduces the reader to the mathematical concept of fractals, geometric shapes that can be split into parts, each of which is an approximate copy of the whole. Nature produces these patterns in features like the branching of a tree, ocean waves, and cloud formations. Williams' book also explains why being exposed to natural fractals and taking time to regularly immerse ourselves in nature is so crucial to our physical and mental health. Read about it in our feature below.

This Earth Day, we want to celebrate by sharing this fascinating book with one lucky reader. We'll draw a random name from all those who enter by sending us an email between now and April 30. Just put "Nature Fix" in the subject line and tell us your favorite way (or place to go) to get a nature fix. Bonus points if you have ever looked for fractals!

If you're like us, you celebrate Earth Day every day as you work for sustainable waste management in your community. Our goal is to stay abreast of the latest developments so we can share them with you and you can share them as part of your local environmental education efforts. Please give me a call or email me. We would love to hear from you!

Have fun walking in the woods and looking for fractals!

Is Nature The Miracle Cure?

What if there was something you could do that would improve your life, make you feel better, make you more productive, and even help you live longer? What if it were available in many forms and in many places, frequently costing you little or nothing to access? And what if that something was simply nature?

An extremely likable Florence Williams travels the globe talking to people who are providing scientific evidence of this miracle cure. Specific guidelines and fascinating background are presented in her 2017 book, The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative, (W.W. Norton & Company, 280 pages).

According to Williams' findings, e xposure to nature lowers cortisol, blood pressure, and heart rate. It also reduces the symptoms of dementia and depression while increasing immunity. Check out the  full book review by Eco Partners' Gary Roe.
