"T he flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away."
- Song of Solomon 2:12-13

Thank you to all for your prayers and support throughout the Design for Excellence process. It is a long process but very reaffirming. We appreciate your patience with all the half days - now back to normalcy!

Next Tuesday our wonderful choir will be traveling to Kings Dominion to participate in the choral festival, and to enjoy a day of fun!

This Friday report cards will be going home. Please make sure to check with your student(s).

Congratulations to St. Ambrose students who participated in the Diocesan Science Fair. There were 280 entrants from diocesan schools, 44 in the field of Chemistry. We are proud to announce that 7 th grader Teresa Reilly won first place in that category and Sarah Mitchell, 8 th grade, received an Honorable Mention. Pio Nguyen, also in 7 th grade, received an Honorable Mention in the field of Botany. Congratulations to all three!

Next Sunday is World Day of Prayer for Vocations (see below) and this Friday our school prayers will be focused on vocations. Please join us spiritually in praying for vocations.

God, in Baptism you called me by name
and made me a member of your people, the Church.
Help all your people to know their vocation in life,
and to respond by living a life of holiness.
For your greater glory and for the service of your people
raise up dedicated and generous leaders
who will serve as sisters, priests, brothers, deacons, and lay ministers.

Jesus surprised the people he met. We can be surprised by Jesus too!
People in the temple were amazed by the conversations and questions that they had with a boy named Jesus.
Hungry people in a crowd had more than enough food to eat when Jesus provided plenty of food.
Two travelers were sad that Jesus died, but then they were surprised when Jesus started walking alongside them!
With each surprise, people discovered more about Jesus.

Is your child ready to be surprised by Jesus?  Is your child ready to ask questions and discover more about him? Then he/she should come along on the journey and see what can be found!

Registration form may be found here, on St Ambrose Church website, or by contacting Laura Mead at [email protected]
Recent donation to RMHC

For the past three years, our school families have been collecting pop tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC.  Over our recent Easter vacation, Mrs. Kiernan donated our current collection of 19.6 lbs of pop tabs to the RMHC office located on the campus of the INOVA Hospital on Gallows Road. This is in addition to our school's June 2017 donation of more than 19 lbs of pop-tabs.

Let's see if we can top our recent donation in the year to come!  It is a great way to teach our children about philanthropy and the importance of recycling, while raising funds to help sick children and their families.  Help us to help them...

Collection containers are located in each classroom and the 6th graders periodically pick up all pop tabs from each homeroom.  Alternatively, parents can drop off their donations in the front office for Mrs. Kiernan's attention.  The RMHC sells the metal tabs and all funds support their cause. You can find the pop tabs on soda cans, some soup or vegetable cans, cat food cans, etc.

Thank you for your help in supporting this worthy cause.

Health Clinic Notes Spring 2018

Happy spring!  Hope this finds everyone energized by the longer days and hints of warmer temperatures, as we move forward through the school year.  Although we had incidences of illness throughout the fall and winter (Flu, Strep Throat, and Gastrointestinal illness) the numbers were not exceedingly high, day to day, up to this point. Please continue to encourage proper hand washing and covering coughs. Also, if your daughter has long hair I would encourage your daughter to wear her hair back in a pony tail or braid when at school. This simple move helps control the spread of lice. Thank you!
If your child has seasonal allergies, please speak with your child's pediatrician about allergy management to minimize symptoms and loss of learning time. To be effective, over the counter allergy meds need to be started early. If your child uses eye drops, nasal sprays, or any other medications for allergies and you want to have it available at school, I must have a Medication Authorization Form with proper signatures. The medication can be left at the Health Clinic when that paperwork is complete. There are many antihistamines/decongestants that do not have sedating side effects and are best for school days.
Reminders:
  • Please continue head checks for signs of nits/ lice on a regular basis of 2 - 3 times per week. If detected, treat and notify me so I can notify classes. Confidentiality is honored.  Increase checks to daily, for 2 - 3 weeks if you get a class notification of lice.
  • Healthy eating, regular exercise, adequate sleep and hydration are encouraged to maintain health, wellness and learning.
  • If your child has an illness or injury or surgery that will impact education, please let me know so I can be aware and advocate for your child at school.  If your child has restrictions for school, I will need a note from the physician with the restrictions documented.
  • If your child has an Epi-Pen and you receive a call that it will expire, please replace as soon as possible. Best practice would be to have the emergency medication your child may need on hand at school and on field trips.
  • Kindergarten and 6th graders for the 2018 - 2019 school-year need to provide the Health Clinic with an up-to-date immunization list. There are specific boosters that students are required to have before entering Kindergarten and 6th grade. Thank you for getting this information to me as soon as possible

Shout Outs
The St. Ambrose PTO would like to congratulate the faculty and staff on the re-accreditation of our wonderful school.  All your extra hard work and enthusiasm is appreciated by parents and students alike.
The St. Ambrose PTO would like to thank Margaret Kelty for turning over the reigns of the Used Uniform Sale to the equally capable hands of Julia Hecton. Both women are quiet stalwarts of St. Ambrose and their volunteerism is much appreciated.
