Vitamin D Deficiency During Pregnancy Connected to Elevated Risk of ADHD
[Source: Science Daily]

The risk of ADHD was 34 percent higher in children whose mother had a vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy than in those children whose mother's vitamin D level was sufficient during the first and second trimesters. The result was adjusted for maternal age, socioeconomic status and psychiatric history.

The study is the first population-level research to demonstrate an association between low maternal vitamin D level in early to mid-pregnancy and an elevated risk for diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder ADHD in the offspring.

Fewer LGBTQ Teens Plagued by Suicidal Thoughts, But Rates Still High
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Suicidal behavior is declining among U.S. teenagers who identify as LGBTQ, but the problem remains pervasive.

That's the conclusion of two new studies that tracked trends among U.S. teenagers over the past couple of decades. Over the years, more kids have been identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBTQ)-and their likelihood of reporting suicidal thoughts and behavior has gone down.
The bad news is they remain at much higher risk of suicide than their heterosexual peers, the researchers said.

Autism Exercise Programs Help Reduce Stereotypic Behaviors
[Source: Your Therapy Source]

Do you work with children who are on the autism spectrum? Are you aware that autism exercise programs have shown the potential to reduce stereotypic behaviors?

Researchers recently conducted a student to investigate how autism exercise programs can help reduce stereotypic behaviors since these types of behaviors have the potential to effect social skills. Also, stereotypical behaviors may effect the ability to learn new information, interfere with healthy play skills, or may indicate later self-injurious behaviors.

Number of Homeless Students Hits All-Time High
[Source:  Education Week]

A record-high 1.5 million students were homeless during the 2017-18 school year, 11 percent more than the previous year and nearly double the number a decade ago, according to new federal data.

To put that in perspective, imagine a school district bigger than New York City and Miami-Dade put together, made up of children who are trailing other students-even those in poverty-by 10 percentage points or more in math, reading, and science. Eighteen percent of them have learning disabilities. Nearly that many are still learning English. Virtually all of them experience stress and trauma.

"Frozen" Inspired Salt Writing Tray
[Source:  I Can Teach My Child]
I am somewhat obsessed with the smooth, shiny, ice-like texture from corn syrup paint.  A few weeks ago we created a Frozen-inspired name painting.   After it was finished, I thought it would be a great for a salt writing tray as well!

Q-Tip Painted Snowflakes
[Source: No Time for Flashcards]

This is a simple winter craft that I have planned for my class of two and three year olds. I often test out my lesson plans on my 4 year old and today when she asked what I was going to do with my class I told her we were going to make Q-tip painted snowflake crafts and she asked if she could make one too. Of course! Since she is older she glued her

OT Corner:   The Confusion of Sensory Craving, Stereotypy, Hyperactivity and OCD
[Source:  OT and Self Regulation]

It can be difficult to accurately distinguish between sensory craving and stereotypy. Both symptoms play a big role in autism and both are part of the ASD¹ diagnosis, so you might think they are distinct. But they're not. They can be easily mistaken for each other and even overlap. Does it matter that we identify exactly what is going on? Yes. How can we create successful interventions without pegging the problem correctly.
Look at the descriptions and examples below and see if you can pick out inherent problems. See if you notice the areas of overlap and blurry lines between them, and also with them and hyperactivity (ADHD²) and obsessive behaviors (OCD).

SLP Corner: The Importance of Pointing
by Katie Yeh, M.S. CCC-SLP, Playing with Words 365

I feel like Everett, with the exception of walking, has hit every developmental milestone earlier than his older sister. He sat up, crawled and spoke his first word earlier than she did. Yeah yeah yeah, I know you aren't supposed to compare your children but I'm sorry: I am human and I will compare them sometimes. Plus, as a speech pathologist AND mommy, I have always been fascinated with development in general, so I find it interesting how my two children have developed a little differently.

School Psych Corner:   3 Ways To Help Children with Fears, Worries or Phobias
[Source:  Lynne Kenney.com]

What is a phobia?
Fears are common and expected in childhood; however, for some children and teens, their fears can become very severe over time, and even develop into a phobia. A phobia is an intense, unreasonable or exaggerated fear of a specific object or situation.
How common are phobias in childhood?

Literacy Corner:  What's Going On In Your Child's Brain When You Read Them A Story?
[Source:  Mindshift]

"I want The Three Bears!"

These days parents, caregivers and teachers have lots of options when it comes to fulfilling that request. You can read a picture book, put on a cartoon, play an audiobook, or even ask Alexa.
newly published study gives some insight into what may be happening inside young children's brains in each of those situations. And, says lead author Dr. John Hutton, there is an apparent "Goldilocks effect" - some kinds of storytelling may be "too cold" for children, while others are "too hot." And, of course, some are "just right."

Autism Corner: 5 Ways To Handle a Power Struggle
[Source: Autism Classroom News & Resources]

Have you worked with a student who you constantly drew you into a power struggle? Ever had a student who seemed to be able to push exactly the buttons that upset you or someone else in your classroom?  Or a student who wouldn't back down when you gave him a direction he didn't like?

Think about a student who refuses a direction.  You tell him to get his math done. He says, "No." You tell him he will lose choice time, and he says, "Fine!" And you find yourself arguing with him and trying to think
