In honor of Earth Day and National Volunteer Month, we're sharing our favorite volunteer moments!
Barb -
Volunteering at Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. I fell in love with this guy. He had scars all over his body and was frightened by lots of things. He loved for me to sit in his run and hold him. He is such a sweet guy and definitely didn't deserve his past.
Timmy -
I have volunteered with the University of Maryland College Park Alumni Association for many years. I served as a board member, president of the board and a member of the executive committee. I loved serving as MC for our awards galas - the accomplishments of our alums was amazing. As president, I was privileged to speak at several graduations in the Xfinity Center - I loved addressing 10,000 of my closet friends!
Lisa - I volunteer regularly at the Heritage Society of Essex and Middle River. It is a great little museum that is housed in the former Police/Fire station in Essex. We plan many community events throughout the year, and offer rotating exhibits celebrating local history. The museum is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm and tours are free!
Dana -
I volunteer at the Flag House downtown. It's a wonderful museum that I wish more people knew about. I also used to be a "cat cuddler" at MDSPCA - I wanted to bring them all home with me!
Karen B -
Volunteering is a great way to give back to our community while hanging with some nice folks (or animals!)
I enjoy volunteering at my parish, Church of the Nativity. I serve in Guest Services, which is like an information desk for all things Nativity! I am also a Eucharistic Minister when needed.
As I'm a dog lover, I volunteer with Lab Rescue by occasionally fostering dogs that come in to the Rescue before they find their "forever home."
I also volunteer at my Alma Mater, Notre Dame Prep, where I have served on their Marketing and Communications Committee for the last 5 years. I love it!
Karen E - I believe in giving back to the community and causes you care about. For over a decade, I volunteered extensively with my kids school - from organizing a large-scale school event to being the grade parent, I did it all. I also volunteered for Family and Children's Services of Central Maryland, a local non-profit that provides social services to needy families in the area. This summer, I look forward to volunteering with another local charity and helping out as much as I can.
Sarah - My favorite volunteer experience was Walk A Mile In Her Shoes. Walk A Mile is an event held all over the world to raise awareness and funds for local rape crisis centers and domestic violence shelters. I participated and volunteered at multiple Walk A Mile events while living in South Carolina. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month - contact your local crisis center to see how you can help.
Brittany -
Volunteering at a senior living home. I supported various events and activities, including happy hours. Both of my grandmothers lived there. Not only did I get to spend quality time with them, but I was able to meet many wonderful people and learn about their lives. I loved it so much, I eventually became a server in the dining room!

April 2018
From the Desk of Barb Clapp...
Volunteering has always been a large part of my life. Since I was very young, I knew that helping others should be a responsibility I carry with me throughout my life. One of the issues I am most passionate about is improving animal welfare and advocating for the safe and kind treatment of animals. I regularly volunteer at animal shelters and have helped lobby for the Beagle Freedom Bill, which was just passed!! Some of the other issues I support are reflected in the boards I serve on, which include the Maryland Humanities Council, Signal 13 Foundation, and Humane Society of the United States State Council. Right now, I'm headed off to Kanab, Utah to volunteer at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary! Read about my experience in the next newsletter.
