Recording of National RTAP Webinar: Moving from Demand Response to Deviated Fixed Route
T
his webinar held on April 18 discussed the process of evaluating a transit system for the implementation of a deviated fixed route service has been recorded.
The webinar features a presentation by an agency that operates a deviated fixed route.
Presenters included Julie Schafer of RLS & Associates, Angie Peters of Union County Public Transit in Oregon, and Frank Thomas of Oregon DOT.

FTA and US DOT Updates
FTA announced about $264 million in projects to improve safety and reliability of bus systems and enhance mobility for transit riders. 139 projects in 52 states and territories will receive funding from FTA's
Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program. Tribal recipients include Confederated Salish and Kootenai, Pyramid Lake Paiute, Muckleshoot, Ninilchik and
Coeur d' Alene Tribes.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on April 9, 2018 committing to following the President's One Federal Decision framework for processing environmental reviews and permits for major transportation infrastructure projects. The memorandum set a 2-year goal for completion of all environmental reviews and authorization decisions.

National Center for Rural Road Safety will host a webinar on April 26, 1:00-2:30 PM ET on Sharing the Road with Slow Moving Vehicles. It will cover best practices for sharing the road with bicycles, agricultural vehicles, horse and buggies, and parade/funeral vehicles, etc.

in Denver, CO
. Transit professionals, state DOT staff, and regional planners involved in planning and implementing technology-based applications for rural transit operations will learn valuable skills and develop a project plan.
Publications
TCRP's Administration of ADA Paratransit Eligibility Appeal Programs identifies ADA eligibility appeal processes and documents current practices of transit systems. ADA paratransit eligibility appeal programs allow appellants to present new information not provided or available during the initial eligibility decision that may warrant a change in eligibility determination.
TRB has created a Snap Search on Rural Transportation, which showcases TRB's involvement in research on the topic from 2015-2018, and includes a number of projects that National RTAP has participated in.
Opportunities
The AARP Community Challenge funds projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability. Non-profits, government entities and other organizations can submit projects that deliver a range of transportation and mobility options in the community through walkability, bikeability and/or and access to public and private transit. The deadline is May 16, 2018.
American Public Transportation Foundation (APTF) will award at least 21
scholarships to transit professionals interested in pursuing or advancing a career in the public transit industry. Awards range from $2,500 to $5,000. Learn more or apply at
aptfd.org. The application deadline is June 15, 2018.
Legislation
The
Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 was passed on February 9, 2018. The Act funded FTA training and technical assistance at $5 million. Other areas funded included technical assistance for disaster recovery, a public transportation emergency relief program, and transportation infrastructure.
