LANZATECH TURNS POLLUTION FROM FACTORIES INTO FUEL
A bacteria found in the gut of a rabbit can now help cars run in a more eco-friendly way. The bacteria, identified by biotech start-up LanzaTech (
Jennifer Holmgren), helps turn factory carbon emissions into ethanol, an alcohol that is blended with gasoline to reduce the amount of fuel used by cars.
"The world uses 50 million barrels per day of fossil fuels (that's for cars, planes, boats). If we want to try to substitute a significant portion of that using sugars ... we would end up using all our landmass to make fuels versus growing crops to feed people," said Jennifer Holmgren, CEO, LanzaTech.

 CHICAGO FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN ANNOUNCES 75 GRANTS TO SUPPORT WOMEN'S HEALTH AND FREEDOM FROM VIOLENCE
Chicago Foundation for Women (K. Sujata) announced 75 grants totaling $914,500 to support access to health, freedom from violence and economic security for women and girls in the Chicago region. Investments include 17 grants totaling $121,000 made by the Giving Councils and Circles of CFW, as well as the second year of the Englewood Women's Initiative.
"At a time of escalating threats to the safety of survivors of domestic violence and women's access to health care, CFW remains committed to investing in safe, healthy and thriving communities for women and girls," CFW President/CEO K. Sujata said. "We are proud to continue to build and deepen our community-based investments through the second year of the Englewood Women's Initiative, supporting economic security for women living in Greater Englewood."

COMED CELEBRATES 30 TEEN GIRLS DURING FIFTH ANNUAL KICK-OFF FOR ICEBOX DERBY
On July 19, ComEd publicly announced the 30 young women, ages 13 to 18, who were selected to participate in the 2018 Icebox Derby program that the energy company developed to encourage women to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and careers.
Exelon CEO
Anne Pramaggiore welcomed and rallied the 2018 Icebox Derby participants during the kick-off along with other ComEd executives and program mentors.
Throughout the Icebox Derby summer program, participants will work in teams to transform recycled refrigerators into electric and solar-powered racecars.

ELAINE MAIMON PRESENTED AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEW HORIZONS IN EDUCATION
Elaine P. Maimon, President, Governors State University, presented a keynote address titled "Leading Academic Change: Vision, Strategy, Transformation" at the 8th annual International Conference on New Horizons in Education held July 18 - 20 in Paris, France. The audience, composed of hundreds of academics from around the world, displayed great interest in the academic experience at GSU.
The conference was a family engagement. Elaine's husband, Dr. Mort Maimon, an educator and writer, led a session titled "Conversation with Dr. Mort Maimon about Effective Teaching Strategies." Their daughter, Dr. Gillian Maimon, a teacher of both elementary and graduate students in Philadelphia, led, "Honoring Diversity in an Elementary School Classroom."
