Just Released: California Grape Acreage Report - 2017 Summary
California's 2017 grape acreage totaled 880,000 acres, down 17,000 from 2016, according to results from an annual government acreage survey. The
wine-type grape acreage
is estimated at 599,000 acres -- 560,000 bearing and 39,000 non-bearing. In comparison, wine-type grape acreage was 602,000 in 2016 and 608,000 in 2015. The leading winegrape varieties continue to be chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. CDFA and USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service conducted the acreage survey by mailing a questionnaire in October 2017 to approximately 8,300 grape growers, followed by phone calls and site visits.

Farm Bill Advances in House
The House Agriculture Committee on April 18 passed out of committee the
Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018 (H.R.2)
. All 26 Republicans voted in favor and all 20 Democrats opposed. The committee adopted more than a dozen amendments to the bill. It now goes to the full House of Representatives, which is expected to vote on the farm bill next month.

Specialty Crop Alliance, Ag Research Universities Lobby for Farm Bill Funding
The Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance (SCFBA) -- a national coalition of more than 120 specialty crop organizations, including CAWG -- announced its farm bill priorities this week. In a letter to the House Agriculture Committee, the SCFBA requested the following: enhance funding for the Specialty Crop Research Initiative, continue the Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops program, increase funding to combat invasive pests and diseases, continue strong funding of Specialty Crop Block Grants, and increase access to foreign markets.

LEGISLATION SEEKS NEW WAGE REPORTS FROM EMPLOYERS
A controversial bill is working its way through the California Legislature and could force California businesses to submit detailed salary data to the state. In an effort to achieve equal pay for women,
SB 1284 (Jackson)
would require companies with 100 or more employees to annually report the number of workers, and the race, sex and total earnings of each employee.
CAWG is part of a coalition of industries opposing this bill. The Chamber of Commerce has labeled SB 1284 a "
Job Killer" (see entire 2018 list)
The problem with the bill, beyond its excessive costs, is that it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. SB 1284 will cause salary comparisons based only on gender, regardless of the workers' experience. Additionally, the bill requires information to be reported by job category. This means that if there are a small number of workers in any category, the report will essentially make public the salaries of those individual workers.
Remember, it is already illegal to base wages on the worker's gender. Nonetheless, this week the Senate Judiciary Committee passed SB 1284 by a partisan vote.

National Grape & Wine Initiative Changes Name
The
National Grape & Wine Initiative
has a new name to highlight its research mission: National Grape Research Alliance. This is the third name change since the organization was founded in 2003; the original name was Winegrower's Critical Research Investment Initiative
. "Wine remains an important industry constituent and constitutes the majority of our membership," said Jerry Lohr, founder of J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines and a founding member of the organization. "But we are stronger when we work together on common goals that span all industry sectors. We truly are an alliance of grape stakeholders representing growers, producers, university and government scientists, and extension specialists, all committed to advancing the future of the industry through research."
