HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! As we bring this calendar year to a close we wanted to take a moment to THANK YOU for you for being a friend of the Bunche Center! We have partnered, planned, and plotted over the course of the year to do great work and we are so appreciative of your support and enthusiasm for international education at Howard University!
This year brought us the important milestone of HU’s sesquicentennial anniversary and we were able to highlight many of the individuals, through our lecture series, who have graced this university and impacted or influenced the world. In this current academic year, our lecture series, “Russia 101”, is generating dialogue around relevant issues pertaining to Russia and with support from our study abroad program providers we hosted the first “HBCU Study Abroad Symposium” which brought together faculty and administrators from over 30 HBCUS to discuss ways in which we could strengthen study abroad at our institutions. This fall semester we sent a record number of HU students abroad, increasing participation in study abroad for a fall semester by 116%.
2018 promises to be an even more exciting year and we have set our ambitions high. We will be hosting two conferences, “Global Perspectives on Police, Law and Society: Common Ties Across Communities of Color” (March) and “Globalization, Race, and the New Nationalism” (June) in collaboration with various schools and colleges at HU. And we will launch our semester-long study abroad program, “Race, Ethnicity, and Identity in Colombia”, in Cali, Colombia in conjunction with CET Academic Programs in Fall 2018. We will host our 3
rd
Passport drive with CIEE’s Passport Caravan. We are looking to provide 300 HU students with the first passport so they can take advantage of international opportunities at the Mecca. International Education Week celebrates global bent of U.S. academics, our diverse student body and professionals in the field. This year the IEW took place from November 13-17 and for the third year in a row, the Bunche Center coordinated a series of events on topics such as intercultural competency development, intra-group dynamics abroad and regional conflict in Eastern Europe stemming from divisive ethnic identities and nationalism.

In conjunction with IES Abroad, the Bunche Center co-hosted a Risk Management Workshop open to all international educators as well as university staff and administrators in the DC-Metro area. Bill Hoye, IES' COO, led the discussion which included real-life scenarios, recent judicial findings and proven best practices to reduce and manage risk to students and faculty going abroad.

On Nov. 30
th
the RBC in conjunction with the School of Education, the School of Communication, and the Mexican Cultural Institute, hosted Peabody Award winning filmmaker John Valadez on campus for a screening of his PBS documentary, “The Head of Joaquin Murrieta.” His film highlights the history of lynching of Mexicans/Mexican-Americans in the SW United States and his visit to campus was meant to build unity between Black and Brown communities through the sharing of that history. An informative and lively discussion with Mr. Valadez followed the screening and later that evening he served on a panel at the Mexican Cultural Institute discussing Mexican American Art in the US.

The Bunche Center was excited to host the Washington Area Study Abroad Network (WASAN) on December 6th with over 25 DC-MD-VA professionals to discuss intra-group dynamics among study abroad cohorts. Often times we prepare our students for the experience of living and studying abroad and all that entails, but we do not sufficiently prepare them to be with students from a cross-section of the United States. This was the focus of the conversation at this session and we shared best practices from a variety of institutions, government agencies and NGOs. The session was led by HU Study Abroad Program Manager, Ms. MaRaina Montgomery.

During this academic year the Bunche Center partnered with Howard University's Department of Language and Culture and the Black Bread Network (a global coalition of black Russian speakers) to create a lecture series entitled, "Russia 101." President Wayne A.I. Frederick Creates Study Abroad Fund for HBCU Students with $5K Donation
|
Immediately after accepting the Fritz Kaufmann Champion Award for Innovation in International Education, presented to him by the Fund for Education Abroad, Dr. Frederick announced a personal donation of $5,000 to be designated towards a scholarship for students from HBCU's. The Fund for Education Abroad awards scholarships to support efforts to study abroad among student from underrepresented groups.

My name is Cameron Roy Crosby, I’m a graphic designer from Los Angeles, California and a Howard University alum ℅ 2017. In 2013 I transferred from my local community college, AVC, and went to Howard to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Thanks to my inspiring advisors and the accessibility of the Ralph Bunche Center, I took advantage a once-in-a-lifetime experience to travel Europe and familiarize myself with the beauty of European art and culture.
In 2015, the spring semester of my sophomore year, I spent four life-changing months in Paris, France at La Sorbonne IV, one of the country's most prestigious universities, to study Language, Art & Architecture. This exposure to a new lifestyle and the immersion of foreign language and culture has left a lasting impact on my world views and aspirations as a student, artist, and global citizen. During the two years following my study abroad program, I committed to maintaining friendships, relationships, and networks from my Parisian adventures that fueled my desire to return to France. Fortunately, I received an offer from a French company to work as an intern at their design studio in Paris just the day before graduation!
As a child, my dream was to live as an artist in Paris creating paintings that would be exhibited in the world’s finest museums. Though I never imagined I’d have any opportunity to leave California, let alone the country, my dedication to creativity, imagination, and education manifested in an experience that has forever changed the course of my career. While my current position as a product designer isn’t quite the same as displaying my own masterpiece with the likes of Courbet and Renoir, I respect and appreciate the world of artistic design that I contribute to. Plus, I can go admire the Masters' work at the many European museums in my spare time, daydreaming of the future when my pieces will one day grace the Louvre. Until then, I am happily forging my identity as artist and creator at my 6-month internship, where I have been recently promoted to a full-time graphic designer with Logic Design.
Thanks and acknowledgement to HU and the incredible staff at the Ralphe Bunche Center for continuing to encourage young African American minds to take risks and expand their horizons beyond mediocrity, opening up a new and extraordinary world.

The HU Bison Abroad Program is working to send at least 10% of the undergraduate student body abroad by 2020!
This calendar year Howard sent over 100 students abroad on programs thru the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center. This fall semester we increased the number of students going abroad by 116% over previous fall semesters. Additionally, we increased programming for study abroad alumni and information sessions for students who are still considering the opportunity.
With the help of our student ambassadors, the Bunche Brigade, and our study abroad alumni, we have been able to share more stories that encompass our call to action #StudyAbroadSoBlack. As we work to increase the visibility of Black students abroad and encourage more students of color to explore study abroad as an option, we want to thank everyone who has been involved with our activities and programs this past year!
