A Note from Peter
It's an exciting time here at St. Margaret's.
Last night, the Vestry approved the Grant's Committee recommendations to award $95K in funding from our Endowment to 13 nonprofit groups from Rwanda to West Baltimore, including five in AA county. We thank the Grants Committee and all of the many dedicated liaisons who put so much time and effort into ensuring that our funding is given to worthy organizations whose goals and visions are in line with St. Margaret's priorities. And, of course, we couldn't do it without the continued leadership of our Grants Administrator Izzy Winn.
Our leadership and staff continue to grow and evolve. Paul O'Donnell, a vestry member, was voted to become our parish's new Senior Warden at last night's vestry meeting. Paul has an impressive background, serving as a journalist/writer for organizations like Newsweek, CNBC, and House & Garden. He also founded the award-winning religion news and opinion site "belief.net." Be sure and thank Paul at church on Sunday when we will be acknowledging Anne Sessions' years of tremendous service in that role at the 9 & 11:15 a.m. services.
I am also pleased to share that we have officially hired Patti Sachs as the new Assistant Rector starting in June. Patti
has called St. James’ Parish in Lothian home, having been a member there since 2001. She spent two years in the Deacon Formation program in Maryland before attending Virginia Theological Seminary. She will graduate in May with a post-graduate diploma in Theology. Patti is a woodworker, cook and gardener who lives in Shady Side with her partner of 32 years, Patricia (Potzie). In her woodworking life, she has made three croziers (shepherds crooks) for the bishops of Maryland, lots of furniture and even a rowboat for the YWCA!
Finally, we will be saying goodbye to our bookkeeper Harriet Newquist as she leaves to pursue other opportunities. We have hired Teresa McCorkle for that position. Teresa has a great deal of experience in accounting, and recently moved to the area from Texas. She plans to be in the office on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Please give her a warm St. Margaret's welcome and have patience as she learns our specific processes on the job.
Finally, mark your calendars! Here are some activities coming our way:
*Bluegrass Mass & Parish Picnic -June 3
*Episcopal Night at Camden Yards -July 27
*Camp Allen -Aug 6-10.

Open Table Coming to SMC
The Mission Commission of St. Margaret’s Church has approved the development of our first Open Table program,
an international model that uses the intellectual capital of a faith-based community organized into a group of 6 to 8 parishioners and a Brother or Sister that has experienced homelessness to empower the Brother or Sister to begin living into their human potential. The Table works together to set goals, foster accountability, and implement a plan to create change.
We have six volunteers for our first table, and would welcome additional volunteers. Volunteers agree to meet once a week with a Brother or Sister. The Light House of Annapolis is partnering with The Open Table and area churches to support this program to end homelessness in our community. Our Brother or Sister will be referred by the Light House.
Beth Arruda is the Mission Leader. You can email her at
maggiebarruda@gmail.com
.
More information is also available at the Open Table website at www.theopentable.org.

St. Margaret's Guild will be holding their annual spring flower sale but with a twist. On April 22, Guild members will be giving out pots after each service to parishioners who can share some of their own flowers for other parishioners. Participants will fill the pots and return their plant donations to the Annex area (old Day School next to the sanctuary) on April 21-22 or 28-29. The Guild will then sell these offerings as a fundraiser for their mission projects on April 29. For questions or more information, contact Arvilla Wubbenhorst at

Upcoming Youth Events
Summer Mission Trip
North Carolina Coastline Disaster Relief
July 15-21
(age 14 and up – this is because there is power tool use) Cost: approx. $250 (scholarships are available) Deadline July 1
Brethren Disaster Ministries' Rebuild Program engages volunteers to repair and rebuild storm damaged homes for some of the most vulnerable disaster survivors, thereby easing trauma and promoting recovery. Trained construction leaders and household leaders provide volunteer orientation and instruction on the work site, as well as meals at the volunteers housing. Unskilled volunteers willing to learn are invited to work alongside those who are skilled and willing to teach. Volunteer housing is provided, often at local churches or community buildings, where weekly volunteers and leaders stay, eat and become more connected with the community.
Youth Lock In on June 15
DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND we will close out the youth program year with Bubble Ball at our next Lock-in on Friday, June 15.
Participants will meet 6 p.m. on that Friday evening at the church, and can be picked up the next morning between 8 and 8:30 a.m. A $15 participation fee is required to help defray the cost of the rental.
Summer Planning for SMC Youth
We are looking for parents of SMC youth to host an activity so that our youth will have a chance to get together and have some fun this summer. Nothing fancy. You could do a game-and-pizza night, an afternoon bowling out of the hot Maryland sun, or even running through the hose in your back yard! The church can provide you with $50 to defray any costs incurred, and we will provide you with the e-mail list so you can stay in contact with folks.
To follow up, contact Jeff Conover.
Claggett Summer Camps
Registration is now available for summer camps for Episcopal children and youth at the lovely Claggett Center close to Frederick, including:

Upcoming Golf Tournaments
There are two golf tournaments coming up that could use St. Margaret's support for good causes!
The Bishops’ Cup is still played for a designated beneficiary, and for bragging rights. This year all proceeds will be used to fund Hurricane Maria Rebuilding in our companion Diocese of Puerto Rico. Funds raised through the tournament will help purchase building supplies, help fund mission trips, and go to support our brothers and sisters who survived the devastating storm that made landfall on Sept. 20, 2017. New this year is the tournament’s location and style. Thursday, May 10, is the day before the opening of Diocesan Convention at Turf Valley Resort on the Hialeah golf course. Holding the Bishops’ Cup Open there seems natural.
Golfers will have a choice of tee times from 1:04 – 2:16 PM. Play will still be Captain’s Choice and the top three winning foursomes will be awarded prizes. The winning team will also have the honor of displaying the Bishops’ Cup trophy for the next year.
June 14 - Light House Golf Tournament
Friends of the Light House will be hosting their annual event on Thursday, June 14. at the Renditions Golf Course in Davidsonville. St. Margaret's is now soliciting team participation. Fees are $137.50 per person and $550 per four-person team — if we get our reservations in before the end of April. Last year our group included 16 players and this year our goal is at least 20. To participate, contact Mike Winn at
