Share your voice: FCUSD's spending plan for student success
|
The state of California directs a greater share of public education funding to high-need schools, and requires districts to plan for and show how these funds are spent in a document called a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP is a state-mandated document that must be updated each year to ensure that the District not only is targeting its services and expenditures toward our highest-need students, but also to measure whether those actions are meeting the desired outcomes.
We can't identify our highest areas of need without working with all of our stakeholders - our employees, families, students, and community members - to identify what those are. Here's how to do that:

| Russell Ranch, Riverview STEM win 2018 Scholar Dollar Grants to support STEM learning |
Russell Ranch Elementary won a $20,000 2018 Scholar Dollars Grant to use towards the opening of their new innovation station, slated for the Fall of 2018. It will be a STEM Lab and Maker's Space intended for all students to access at throughout the school year. The grant funds will help assist with purchasing tools, supplies and technology, along with development and creation of the space itself on campus.
Riverview STEM Academy won a $5,000 2018 Scholar Dollars Grant to go towards the construction of the solar-powered Riverview Environmental STEM Center, which will be comprised of a weather station, solar demonstration center, garden, composting and recycling centers. The Riverview Environmental STEM Center would allow students to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving and taking action in the environment and enhance their current STEM curriculum.
The dollar amount of the grants were determined based on the number of students at each school. Congratulations to both Russell Ranch and Riverview STEM!

| Folsom High students earn gold, silver and bronze medals at Academic State Decathlon |
Nine students from Folsom High competed in the State Academic Decathlon, earning top honors.
The state competition was help March 22-25, over 600 students competed in the competition. Folsom High's team scored nearly 50,000 points landing in the top 20 overall in the state.
Sean Kniznik earned a perfect score of 1,000 in Interview and Anish Adoni earned a perfect score in math of 1,000 in math, both students took home gold medals.
Pardhu Konakanchi earned five medals: silver in Art, silver in Math, silver in Social Science, bronze in Economics and a gold in Science with a perfect score of 1,000!
The FHS team members that competed in the competition were: seniors Anish Adoni, Tiffany Arroyo, Lester Espinosa, Brayden Gardener, Sean Kniznik, Pardhu Konakanchi, Evan Shong, and sophomores Prateek Sane and Esther Thomas.

| Cordova High student musicians place at Northern CA Band Association's Winter Championship |
Cordova High School's Marching Band had excellent performances at the Northern California Band Association's (NCBA) Winter Championships, held in Stockton a Lincoln High on April 7.
2018-2019 Drum Majors McKayla Tyson placed second of 28 in Novice Military Baton and Rianna Tyson placed 5th of 23 in Novice Field Conducting.
The Varsity Guard won first place in the Advanced Division and the JV Guard were named the NCBA Novice Guard Champions. The Winterline won first place in all four competitions and finished the season as the NCBA Novice Winter Percussion Champions!
2017-2018 senior Drum Major and musician Chris Flynn received the NCBA Winter Activities $500 Scholarship to use towards college expenses. Flynn will be attending Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, to study Architecture.

| Folsom High basketball player McKenzie Forbes named the Sacramento Bee's Player of the Year |
Folsom High senior and girls basketball guard standout McKenzie Forbes was recently named the Sacramento Bee's Player of the Year.
The Sacramento Bee selected Forbes, because they said she was the region's most complete player and most entertaining and also because she led the area's top-ranked squad into the Northern CA Open Division playoffs. Read their full article on McKenzie Forbes.
Forbes was also named as a McDonald's All-American player. She played in the McDonald's All-American Game on March 28 in Atlanta, GA at Philips Arena on the West Team, which beat the East Team, 82-79. Forbes won the 3-point Contest during the McDonald's All-Star Showcase, watch the video.
Forbes is committed to attending and playing for Cal on a basketball scholarship, after she graduates from Folsom High.

| Walnutwood teen receives state honor for overcoming adversity |
Congratulations to Walnutwood High School senior Michelle Broskie, who was recently honored as one of 19 students across California who overcame tremendous adversity to reach their goals of academic excellence.
Michelle is among those honored in the
2018 Every Student Succeeding
program sponsored by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA).
Michelle was nominated by her teacher Jessica Cisneros-Elliott for overcoming a series of personal obstacles including bullying, a health crisis, and victimization by an internship supervisor during her pathway to success.
Students will be honored at ACSA's Leadership Summit in November. Her nomination was supported by ACSA's Region 3, which represents 21 school districts in Sacramento and Yolo counties.

Drug Forum at CHS: Learn warning signs
Join us for a conversation with experts and law enforcement about local drug trends among youth on Monday, April 23 in Rancho Cordova.
A community panel will discuss trends in drug abuse including Xanax, marijuana, alcohol, vaping and other substances, as well as resources available in the community, and ways to support your child.
The Drug Awareness Forum on April 23 is being held at Cordova High's Performing Arts Center from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. Cordova High is located at 2239 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova.
Dinner and childcare will be provided at both forums for those who attend.

Join us for UC Information Night
UC Information Night is being held Thursday, April 19, at 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Folsom High Theater located at 1999 Prairie City Rd, in Folsom
The UC Information Night is for freshman, sophomores, juniors and their families to learn about the UC application process and how to strengthen your application in the first hour of the event.
There will be a UC Mini College Fair in the lobby with UC representatives from all nine campuses in the second hour of the event.

Board of Education: April 19, 2018
The FCUSD Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Thursday, April 19 at 6 p.m. in the Education Services Center Board Room, 1965 Birkmont Drive in Rancho Cordova.
