Volume 31 | March 13, 2020
Dear parents and guardians,

This communication is being sent to address food expectations for the upcoming days, services available in the City School District of New Rochelle (CSDNR) while our schools are closed and the CSNDR Long-Distance Learning Plan, being launched Sunday, March 15, 2020.

Food Distribution Plan

The CSDNR has partnered with local organizations to secure and distribute food. As has been communicated in previous messages, Feeding Westchester has been providing “Breakfast Bags” and “Family Boxes” which contain food for a family of four (4) to last three (3) days. We are very grateful for their immediate response in our time of crisis.
To distribute the food, the CSDNR has used three locations to date. We have set up distribution centers at the New Rochelle High School House IV parking lot, 95 Lincoln Avenue and 345 Main Street. We are very thankful to have had the support of WestCOP and the New Rochelle Housing Authority. On Monday, March 16, 2020, our distribution locations will INCREASE to include Trinity and Columbus Elementary Schools, along with City Park. Also on Monday, we will also increase the access to food being delivered from Feeding Westchester to include 5000 breakfasts and 5000 lunches, being made at the NRHS. The food being made by the district is targeted for students who are out of school as a result of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 crisis. The CSDNR is limited to serving students when using taxpayer dollars to purchase and cook the food but food from Feeding Westchester is for anyone in the community.

We have heard from some in the community, who wish to partner with the district to increase distribution posts and food. At this time, the CSDNR is at its logistical and operational capacity. We must serve the community distribution centers already established. If you wish to help by volunteering at any of our distribution sites, please do. NRHS, Trinity and Columbus will be open from 9:00am – 12:00pm. 95 Lincoln Avenue, 345 Main Street and City Park will be open from 9:00am to 4:00pm (extended hours). In addition to what the CSDNR has coordinated, many in the community have launched their own food distribution sites. We celebrate the NewRo spirit!

Food will be available at any of the Feeding Westchester mobile locations, this weekend. Click here to see where the mobile locations are: https://feedingwestchester.org/find-help/mobile-food-pantry-schedule/

What Services Remain Accessible While Schools are Closed?
The CSDNR recognizes that there are many in the community who may need added supports while schools are closed. We are sensitive to the reality that crisis often triggers people and their anxiety. We are here for you. Sometimes dispelling false information helps to create a sense of calm.

Following are resources that may be helpful in talking to students about the COVID-19:

All students with special needs, medical conditions, and mobility challenges have been identified and are being monitored. In addition, our highest risk students within those categories have been flagged. ALL STUDENTS in our district will soon be provided with guidelines and instructional lessons by their appropriate teaching staff through March 25, 2020.

Though we cannot accommodate all specific services on IEPs at this time, such as speech services, occupational and physical therapy, etc.; teachers and administrators have tailored the work to manage students’ needs as best as possible.
If the need arises, in terms of any academic, social, or emotional support that you feel requires additional attention, please contact the CSDNR, at any time. The response time for requests will be adhered to with reasonable urgency.

Distance Learning Plan

Earlier today, we shared an informational video .  For those of you who could not access the video please see the contents therein below:

CSDNR Distance Learning Plan

The City School District of New Rochelle is committed to continuing instruction while schools are closed. To that end, we have created a robust Distance Learning Plan (DLP) that will be rolled out on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

Parents, guardians and students will have time to review the information shared before beginning their learning journey on March 17, 2020. We chose that date to begin the DLP as it represents the first "non-snow day" in the series of days the schools are closed.

The CSDNR will lead the way in distance learning while we and many other districts seek to find innovative solutions to the consequences we have been forced to face as a result of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 crisis. We will share this rigorous and thorough plan with the New York State Education Department.

We thank the team of building leaders, department chairpersons and teachers who collaborated to produce our plan.

We will advocate for the days to count as instructional time towards the 180 days that schools are required to serve students.

We believe that the CSNDR Distance Learning Plan, developed by our K-12 professionals, at all levels of leadership, highlights what can be achieved when exceptional educators work in the service of students.

Please look for the complete plan this Sunday when we launch!

If you need access to a Chromebook, please email Chromebook@nredlearn.org .  We will work to distribute and deliver Chromebooks to middle and high school students who request one.

We must make these 2 weeks count and ensure students are learning and engaged while we deal with this worldwide crisis.

In the DLP, students are tasked with the completion of specific tasks created in consultation with teachers, building and district administrators.
Sincerely,
Dr. Laura Feijóo
Superintendent
Queridos padres y guardianes,

Atentamente,
Dra. Laura Feijóo
Superintendente
