Closing is Not God's Final Word

Even at the risk of losing its life: Closing a church is not God's final word

by Nancy Dolan| The Presbyterian Outlook
How will you feel if we decide to close? About 45 minutes into the interview for the solo pastor position at Kirk of the Lakes, a small congregation in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, that was the question posed to me. I paused, half expecting someone to cry out, "Get behind me, Satan!" This ruling elder had voiced the unspeakable; she had named aloud the source of their deepest collective anxiety: the possibility the congregation would have to close its doors.

We are saddened to report the death of one of our Retried Pastors, Truman Geelsin. Truman passed away on July 6th and is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Patricia. Truman served several congregations in Transylvania Presbytery including Bethel in Lexington and White's Memorial in Berea.

Please keep his family in your prayers as they walk through this difficult time.

Facing Racism: A Churchwide Policy on Antiracism
Racism is the opposite of what God intends for humanity. It is the rejection of the other, which is entirely contrary to the Word of God incarnate in Jesus Christ. Racism is a lie about our fellow human beings, for it says that some are less than others. Because of our biblical understanding of who God is and what God intends for humanity, the PC(USA) must stand against, speak against and work against racism.

As part of an ongoing campaign to address racial injustice, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is sharing a wealth of antiracism resources - including studies, books and training - to equip the greater church to work against racism. We hope you'll return to this site frequently as links to new resources are added between now and the 223rd General Assembly in June 2018.
