FAR CORNER
ASP Participants Volunteer at FAR's Summer Camp

For the fourth year in a row, youth with the Armenian Service Program (ASP) spent a few days as volunteer counselors at FAR's summer camp in Armenia's Kotayk Region. For four days they organized different sports games, while trying to coach and teach by example the lessons of good sportsmanship and determination. They also helped camp staff to serve meals and spruce up the campus. Andrew Movsesian, 18, from Philadelphia, didn't miss the chance of joining ASP in 2018 for his first visit to Armenia. "I love it-seeing the country and providing some service-everything seems amazing to me. The people are extremely welcoming and nice. They greet us with open arms," he said. FEAST OF THE APPARITION OF HOLY ETCHMIADZIN ACCORDING TO
THE VISION OF ST. GREGORY

The Feast of "Shoghakat" of Holy Etchmiadzin commemorates the inauguration of the Cathedral of the Mother See, and this year is celebrated on August 11. The fifth century Greek historian Agathangelos tells us of St. Gregory the Illuminator's divine vision, wherein our Lord Jesus Christ descends from Heaven and strikes the ground with His golden hammer. In view of biblical Mount Ararat, in the city of Vagharshapat, the place where the Only Begotten descended identified the site for the foundation of the new cathedral of the Christian Armenian Nation. The vision of Gregory became known as "Shoghakat", as the Saint saw a fiery column descending from the sky.

The foundation was laid in 301 A.D. and the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin was consecrated in 303 A.D. on the day of the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God. We learn from Archbishop Malachia Ormanian that as the Mother Cathedral of the Armenian Church and Nation is dedicated to St. Mary, the feast of her foundation and inauguration is celebrated in the Armenian Church on the Saturday preceding the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God.

For 1,700 years, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has been, and continues to be, the spiritual heart and center of the Armenian Church, and is her most sacred sanctuary. Her spiritual, national and historical significance has only increased through the centuries. Through the vision of St. Gregory, God Incarnate descended upon the soil of Armenia and predetermined her future, making Armenia the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion.
DIOCESAN AND OTHER NEWS

Reception for Armenia's New Foreign Minister at Diocesan Center

Leaders of New York's Armenian and diplomatic communities converged on the Diocesan Complex for a celebratory evening on Friday, July 20, as Armenia's new Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan was honored at an elegant reception in Haik and Alice Kavookjian Auditorium.

Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan welcomed the Foreign Minister-a longtime friend of the Eastern Diocese-and the numerous dignitaries in attendance. These included Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Dr. Vartan Gregorian, Dr. Movses Abelian; dignitaries from Armenia's government and diplomatic corps, including Mher Margaryan of the country's UN Mission; and some two dozen UN diplomats, including ambassadors from Canada, France, Iran, Greece, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Argentina, Finland, and Turkestan.

"We are a small country," noted the Primate, "but we are much more than that, with a rich history, culture, and civilization-in Armenia and in the diaspora." Wishing Foreign Minister Mnatsakanyan great success, he commented, "You bring great honor, and will bring justice, to our people."

Sing Along with "Early Morning Prayer"

The Sacred Music Council of the Eastern Diocese announced this week the publication of a downloadable e-book: Early Morning Prayer on the Day of the Lord.

In a foreword to the volume, Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan welcomes the Sacred Music Council's latest effort as a way for the faithful to learn the "prayers, hymns, and faith-fortifying ceremonies that echo not only sacred Scripture, but the Armenian people's own longstanding love for the risen Savior."

This book combines music from the church's Night and Morning services, along with complete musical notation and transliterated Armenian lyrics and liturgical texts.

Online audio recordings, beautifully rendered by Diocesan clergy, accompany the book as an aid to learning and appreciating our sacred music.

"In this way, the unique Christian witness reflected in the Armenian Church's Sunday morning worship may captivate the heart of all in our Diocese, building up our local communities in the authentic faith, love, and Christian witness that have animated our people for ages," writes the Primate.

FAR Helps Armenia's Rural Dairy Farmers

Nestled on the quiet slopes of Armenia's Armenasar Mountains, 10 families run the Navur Milking Point.

Early each May, the families head up to the mountains from their villages of Navur and Itsakar to spend six months tending to cows and producing milk, yogurt, and cheese. The high-quality products they sell from this six-month production period in the mountains can supplement their income for the entire year. (The cold climate is too harsh for man or beast to remain in the mountains year round.)

In 2017, FAR joined international development agencies and local NGOs in an effort to improve cattle-breeding efficiency in villages. The program aims to contribute to the sustainable growth of communities like Navur and Itsakar, which are dependent on income generated from livestock.

Thanks to this effort, the dairy farmers have access to facilities equipped for cattle husbandry and milk production. They can now easily transfer the milk in bulk quantities, and keep it cold and fresh through processing.

  BIBLE READING
2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 "Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, "Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he said to the man, 11 "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home." 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"
