MESSAGE FROM JENESSA
Welcome back . . . 
I love Back to School time! There's nothing quite like getting a new set of pens or a blank notebook to get you ready for a new year of learning. Well Literacy Mentors, I have Back to School treats for you too! Our kits have several new surprises that I can't wait to show you.  We also have an awesome new Literacy Mentor Coordinator- Monique Jackson. You will love her!  Monique and I are currently working with your Site Leads, Pastors, and Principals to review data and plan for the new year. As soon as a Training Date is settled for your site, we will let you know. Our goal is to have you all trained by the end of August so we can start in schools in September. (Teachers will need a few weeks to settle in before we can begin, anyways). 

I look forward to seeing all of the awesome work God will accomplish through you in our students' lives this year!

MEET MONIQUE
Monique Jackson
Literacy Mentor Coordinator

How did you hear about ENP?
Social media came in handy for this one! While on the Valley Dream Center's FB page I scrolled through and noticed a posting saying good-bye to the Literacy Mentor Coordinator at ENP. I immediately looked up ENP, fell in love, applied and here I am!

What were you doing before ENP?
I was a stay-at-home mom to my youngest 3 kids (10, 6 and 4) and a grad-school student in a masters degree program for Integrative and Functional Nutrition.       

What is your favorite book?
Favorites are hard for me to choose.  But I do love to read any and all children's books with my kids. Currently I am personally reading: Three "Brains: How the Heart, Brain and Gut Influence Mental Health and Identity", "Love and Respect: The Love She Most Desires and The Respect He Desperately Needs" and Tony Dungy's "The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge Devotional".

What are some things you like to do on your free time?
I love a good time at the roller skating rink with my family. Playing games, the more competitive the better! Going for a nice long family bike ride.  Dancing, and dancing on the spot wherever I am if a good salsa or hip-hop song comes on!  All things outdoors especially a day trip to the lake or beach.  Watching football and basketball with my husband!   

What are you passionate about?
Living fiercely in my 40s! Not allowing fear to take away my choices, my voice, and God's calling in my life.  Being apart of community engagement and reconciliation.  Health and Wellness education for all people groups so they can live healthy and whole lives; in mind, body and soul.  Making sure I give my husband and kids at least 3 hugs and kisses a day! And praying for rain to come and help stop these current fires and clean our air here in the Valley!

ENP 20/TWENTY Fall Training
Saturday, August 25
8:30am - 12:30pm

Come learn more about all of ENP's work- from mapping your neighborhood, to resiliency, to yoga and drumming, and even some literacy. All are invited to this fun, interactive training event. 
**Note: This is NOT a Literacy Mentoring Training/Orientation

LITERACY MENTOR SPOTLIGHT
Our Extraordinary Summer Volunteers 
Gail and Diane went above and beyond by volunteering throughout the summer at the Betty Rodriguez library. They connected with families, played literacy games with the kids, and even shared resources for families to practice reading at home.

What was your favorite thing about volunteering at the library?
Diane- "Two things: I liked learning more games to play with kids, that I can use in the classroom when we go back in the fall. I also liked being able to "forget" everything in life for a little while. It was like a mini-mini vacation every time I went."
Gail- "For me it was a joy to see kids returning on Fridays because they knew we would be there with games to play. They loved the word games and personal attention. Am so thankful I could participate--to help kids with reading skills and hopefully give them glimpses of God's love for them."

As we start the school year off, think about doing something special for the teachers at your school. Literacy Mentors from The Well brought breakfast for the Susan B Anthony teachers on their first day back... what a fun, easy, and tasty way to show teachers you care!

ENP's 2nd Annual Fall Banquet
Please join us for an evening celebrating the great work being done in our community. Our ten years of work has allowed us to build trust in the community, our churches, businesses, and other institutions.  As we lean into our 11th year, we can reflect back and see that ENP looks different than it did at its inception in 2008. We are proud of that. As life changes, communities change, and therefore we glean a deeper understanding of our city. We hope with each passing year our community is in a better place to thrive, our kids are excelling and our families are healthier in many ways.
