Louisiana CU Advocates Make Waves in Washington, D.C. Today, Take Their Message to Federal Lawmakers
Credit union advocates are perhaps the largest and most visible lobby group in Washington during what promises to be a historic week. More than 90 Louisiana credit union representatives are joining their peers from around the country in Washington, D.C. for CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC).

To kick-off the event, LCUL hosted a special welcome reception for Louisiana members on Sunday evening, which has become an annual tradition at GAC that allows attendees to meet up with colleagues to network and get ready for several action-packed days of advocacy and education.

During the opening ceremonies on Monday morning, Louisiana was represented in the flag ceremony by Steven Liberto, 2019 CULAC Challenge Champion, and Steve Webb, Neighbors FCU CEO and Vice-Chair of the League Board of Directors. Later that evening, President Bob Gallman accompanied Centric FCU as they were nationally recognized with the Desjardin Financial Literacy Award and the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Award.

Louisiana advocates will be sharing credit union priorities during today's meetings on Capitol Hill with members of our delegation. These visits play a vital role in the advocacy strategies of the League and CUNA, and our GAC attendees will take this opportunity to discuss pressing issues such as on expanding and protecting credit union powers, enhancing information security, reducing regulatory burden, and preserving the credit tax status.
LCUL Joins CUNA, Leagues on Letter to FCC on TCPA Petition
LCUL joined CUNA and its sister leagues and associations on a joint letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding clarifications on the Telephone Consumer Protection Act's (TCPA) applicability to information calls made to wireless phones. These clarifications include adopting an established business relationship exemption from prior consent or by exempting credit union informational calls or texts from the prior consent requirement.

Currently, credit unions can contact members at home via landline connections without prior consent from the member. However, if the call is taken at home on a cell phone, there is an entirely different set of rules. By calling a wireless device without prior consent, under the current TCPA and FCC standards, this opens credit unions up to class-action litigation. The different treatment of informational calls to cell phones and landlines is antiquated, unfair, and fails to reflect how most consumers communicate today. Adoption of either of the Petition's proposed exemptions would restore the balance that Congress sought to achieve between consumers' privacy interests and the legitimate interests of businesses to communicate with their consumers.

Heart of Louisiana CU Donates Over $4,500 to Local Food Bank
Heart of Louisiana Credit Union donated $4,783.50 to the Food Bank of Central Louisiana , providing enough funds to serve 23,915 meals to families in Central Louisiana.

"We are so thankful for the support from the employees and board members of Heart of Louisiana Credit Union," Linda Hutson, Food Bank of Central Louisiana's director of development and community relations, said.

Each year Heart of Louisiana employees work in small groups to complete various activities and assignments. In 2018, Heart of Louisiana's chief executive officer Cindy Beauregard tasked the small groups with researching local organizations to support in the coming year.

Employees researched The Food Bank of Central Louisiana and discovered just how much of an impact the non-profit has in their community.  Their research, along with data from other employees, was delivered to the credit union's board of directors  who approved the Food Bank of Central Louisiana as the cause to champion in 2019.

Throughout the year, the credit union's staff engaged in fundraisers and activities to raise money for the organization. For example, through their "Spread the Love" campaign, the credit union was able to donate over 4,000 ounces of peanut butter to the Food Bank.
