Delta Township Paramedic Millage Up For Renewal On August 7 Ballot
In just one week, Delta Township will ask the residents to consider the renewal of the paramedic/firefighter millage for another ten (10) year period. Delta Township's voters first approved the millage in 1978, and have renewed the millage four times since then. The .9896 mill generates roughly $1.4 million per year and pays for paramedic/ firefighters, ambulances, training, and other paramedic related items needed to provide emergency medical services to the Township. Funds generated by the millage can only be used for emergency services. EMS calls accounted for 88% of all runs by the Delta Fire Department in 2017.

Information You need to Know for the Primary Election
The August Primary Election is just a few days away. If you need to vote by Absentee Ballot because you are unable to get to the polls or you anticipate being out of town on Election Day (August 7) there is still time to get an absentee ballot. The Clerk's office is open 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday the week of July 30. Additionally, the office will be open special hours on Saturday, August 4 from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. Your last chance to get an absentee Ballot is Monday, August 6, between the hours of 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.
Polls open Tuesday at 7:00 am and remain open until 8:00 pm.
Please remember how important voting in the Primary is - you make your voice heard on who advances on the ballot for the November General Election. Additionally, there are three (3) millage proposals up for consideration:

Park Development Updates:
Mount Hope Park Construction:
Progress continues on the earthwork at Mount Hope Park. The attached link provides a flyover view of the progress at the park. Mount Hope Park will provide new soccer fields, ball fields, restrooms, pavilion, and pathways. Click the image above to see a video of the progress so far.
West Willow Canoe Launch Update
The development of a canoe/kayak launch along the Grand River will commence before the end of this summer. The 5-acre wooded parcel located on West Willow Highway was purchased from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) in 2009 with the intention of creating public recreation, and will now provide opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Bank stabilization work within the area of the proposed launch facility will mitigate erosion issues along the riverbank and provide an improved natural habitat. The project, which was approved for $415,700 in July, received grant funds in the amount of $162,500 from the MDNR Trust Fund in 2016.
The
project will
include a new, ADA accessible canoe/kayak launch system, an able-bodied canoe/kayak launch along the riverbank, a parking lot with handicap accessible parking, and an accessible walking path from the parking area to the launch. In the spring of 2019, the ADA accessible launch will be installed and the park site will opened for use.
Delta Mills Canoe Launch
In 2017, Delta Township was awarded grant funds from the MDNR Trust Fund in the amount of $237,500 to construct an accessible canoe/kayak launch and other park improvements at Delta Mills Park. Investments such as these are intended to increase recreational opportunities within Delta Township by creating a water trail that will connect the surrounding communities. The new launch at Delta Mills Park is slated to be constructed in 2019.

- National Night Out - Tuesday, August 7 at Sharp Park from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Come and meet members of your local Delta Patrol of the Eaton County Sheriff's Office. Enjoy a hot hog BBQ, "Touch-A-Truck" (Police Cars, Fire Trucks, Motorcycles), visit with the Mounted Division, meet McGruff and Eddie the Eagle mascots, as well as various other activities.
- Touch-A-Truck - Saturday, August 11, 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Sharp Park. If you like trucks and cars, then come on out for a great time. It's time for the annual Touch-a-Truck Day where kids young and old can touch, honk, and climb on the many vehicles that will be on display. Examples of the vehicles include fire trucks, ambulances, backhoes, snow plows, dump trucks, garbage trucks, and many more. Concessions will be available. Show & Tell Nature Walk -
Sunday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m.
Join us for a participatory nature walk as we explore the plants and wildlife at Hawk Meadow Park. The walk will have a leader but we invite all walkers to be active participants and share their knowledge. Please wear good walking shoes and bring water. Walks will start promptly at the scheduled time and will last approximately an hour. Walks are suitable for the entire family and children will be given a nature log to record their findings. In case of inclement weather, the walk will be cancelled.

Drop-in Pint-Sized Picassos -
This program is held in the Delta Township Enrichment Center on Thursdays, September 20-October 25 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Let us provide the materials and clean-up while your child provides the creativity. There will be at least three different projects each week. The easels will also be available every week for the children to use. The cost is $1 per child, per week, adults are free. No need to register in advance.
Parent Participation is required.

Delta Township Community Awards 2018 Call for Nominations
The Delta Township Community Awards Committee is seeking nominations in each of the following four categories:
The Citizen of the Year Award will honor selected individual citizens whose extraordinary contributions go "above and beyond" to enhance the quality of life and general reputation of the township.
The Young Person of the Year Award is limited to high school seniors (whether traditional high school or home-schooled) who have made a positive contribution to the community, is an example to their friends, may have excelled in academics, music, arts, athletics, etc., or has successfully faced personal challenges. A $2,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Delta Side Business Association, will be awarded to the selected individual.
The Community Organization of the Year Award will honor selected groups or organizations for their dedication in serving and promoting Delta Township through volunteer contributions that has impacted the quality of life in Delta Township, provided leadership over a period of years, thereby contributing to the township's character, and/or made a valuable contribution that has enhanced the quality of life for residents of Delta Township.
The Business of the Year Award will honor selected Delta Township businesses or business persons who have been responsible for exceptional outcomes between and among businesses, governments, and nonprofit organizations; OR, have served as a role model for other business; OR, have gone above and beyond the scope of business to support and promote Delta Township. The goal is to promote shared community interests and encourage business harmony within the township and among entities of the Greater Lansing Region.

Science & Technology Hits Delta:
DTDL Music Coding Camp
 In early July Delta Township District Library (DTDL) hosted a 6-hour Music Coding Camp for kids ages 10-18. The program, held over three days, combined music with technology using fun, hands-on coding activities. Participants learned how to compose music through coding with a software program called Sonic Pi, a coding environment based on the Ruby programming language. Participants translated music notes into code to make their own compositions, which many based on their favorite tunes. The tweens and teens had a variety of abilities and skill levels in terms of coding and music knowledge. Staff who led the program were blown away by the results. "I was amazed at how much the kids already knew about reading music and how fast they caught on to the Ruby language," said Erica Gupton, Township Network Administrator and co-instructor.
One of the most challenging things participants worked on was timing. Participants had to translate whole, quarter, and eighth notes into fractions and then into decimals.
"Translating note timing to code is quite difficult and involved more math then the kids were anticipating," said Seneca Shaffer, Youth Services Library Assistant and co-instructor. "Despite challenges (and what kid wouldn't find it a challenge to be asked to do math during summer vacation?), all the attendees worked very hard to adapt and create their own music out of code."

The library began hosting 3-day camps last summer, with a general coding camp and an art & design camp. They are also offering a stop-motion movie camp this August. So far, all the camps have been quite popular, with registration filling up quickly. The library plans to offer a second session of the Music Coding Camp this fall due to high demand for the summer camp.

Need a Passport? Delta Township Accepts Passport Application
The Delta Township Clerk's office accepts passport applications year around during regular office hours Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The Clerk's Office is offering passport drives during 2018. One picture is required when submitting a passport application (Form DS-11 ONLY) and can be obtained at the Clerk's Office for a $12.00 fee. If you are in need of a new passport, or to renew your existing passport, and find it difficult to get to our office during regular office hours, mark your calendar. The Clerk's Office will be open to accept passport applications (Form DS-11 ONLY) on the following dates in 2018:

Reminder
With RV season upon us, we would like to remind our residents that no person shall park any vehicle, including vehicles used for commercial or recreational purposes, or any trailer on either side of any highway, freeway, street, or roadway located within the township between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. of any day.
A person who violates this section will receive a municipal civil infraction. The civil fine associated with this section shall be set from time to time by the Township Board by resolution.

Non-Motorized Transportation Plan Approved
The Delta Township Planning Commission recently approved the updated 2018 Non-Motorized
Transportation
Plan for the Township and on Monday July 16, the Delta Township Board acknowledged the final plan.
Township staff and elected officials began the process of updating the plan over a year ago, including sending out surveys and holding public meetings where they sought input on future improvements for the plan.
Delta's Non-Motorized Plan has been a priority for the Board which is continually seeking ways to improve the quality of life and providing access to a wide array of recreational opportunities
for the residents of the community.
