Pomp and Circumstance Commences

Student Vets Gift Custom Flag
Members of the V-CARE graduating class had a special gift for their nursing professor Dr. Alicia Rossiter .

The group enlisted veteran Anastasi Mantzouris to build a large wooden flag featuring the USF Bulls logo and the three branches of the military.

Mantzouris, a member of the New York Air National Guard, finished the hand-painted piece two days before deploying to Antarctica.
Dean Hosts a Holiday High Tea
USF College of Nursing faculty and staff had a fanciful time sipping tea and nibbling on dainty delights at the Dean's High Tea on Dec. 10.

The afternoon celebration honored donors who have contributed so far to the yearlong Faculty & Staff Campaign fundraiser which supports USF Health projects and scholarships.

Knitwear was never more hideous than on Dec. 13 when the College of Nursing became a winter wonderland of ugly Christmas sweaters.

Judges adjudicating the ugly sweater contest awarded top honors to Marc Rosales, whose partridge-on-a-shoulder, lighted holiday extravaganza had revelers revolting.

Maikelyn Lopez's custom tinsel-trimmed Christmas tree creation took second place. And Marissa Kearney's Elf movie-inspired ensemble came in third.

Smooth Sailing Through the Holidays
Thanks to all who donated travel size toiletry items to support the world's seafarers who come through the Port of Tampa during the holidays.

These cargo ship workers are far from home and can spend months at sea before coming into port. These small items of soaps, toothbrushes and shampoos make a big difference to this underserved population.
Spring RN-BS Cohort Set To Start
USF College of Nursing Dean Victoria L. Rich, PhD, RN, FAAN, welcomed next semester's RN to BS cohort during an orientation on Dec. 11.

The college is expecting 149 students in the Spring 2020 cohort, which has an average overall GPA of 3.37.

About 25 students attended the orientation to meet faculty and instructors before classes begin on Jan. 13.
A New Pinning Tradition Begins
Members of the USF College of Nursing's nurse anesthesia graduating class celebrated the milestone by organizing a traditional pinning ceremony on Dec. 13 to welcome the cohort into the nursing profession.
Professor Shares Research Expertise
USF College of Nursing Associate Professor Harleah Buck, PhD, RN, FPCN, FAAN, was recently in the national spotlight offering insight about end-of-life care trends.

Dr. Buck was quoted in a news story about a recent study that showed how more people are choosing to die at home, instead of in a hospital.
V-CARE Student Certified as Global Citizen

USF College of Nursing student James Nickson successfully completed the USF Global Citizens Project and received the Global Citizen Award certificate in December.

Nickson earned points for completing designated on-campus global events and activities.
Latino Nursing Student Wins Scholarship

Congratulations to USF College of Nursing student Lianciet Rodriguez, who was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the West Florida National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) for 2019.

Rodriguez is an active member of the local NAHN chapter and is an emerging nurse leader within the Hispanic community.
Giving Thanks to Their Mentors
Members of the USF College of Nursing's Nursing Students' Association (NSA) took a moment before the semester break to thank their teachers during a Faculty Appreciation Breakfast on Dec. 6 in the college's team member lounge.

Nursing Student Advisor Wins Award
USF College of Nursing student advisor Rebecca Gubernick is receiving national recognition for her work in advising pre-nursing students.

Gubernick has been awarded a Certificate of Merit in the Excellence in Advising - Advisor, Primary role category for Region 4 of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
Game Day Test Prep a Win-Win
USF College of Nursing assistant professor Genieveve Cline, DNP, ARNP, NNP-BC, CNE, RN-BC, led students in their test review during a Game Day prep class on Dec. 4 to help nursing students prepare for upcoming exams at the St. Pete campus.
First Tours of the MCOM+HI Building
With the grand opening of the new USF Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute on schedule for January, students, faculty, and staff from the USF College of Nursing's CRNA program took a tour of the new building in December.
St. Pete Nursing Hosts Reception
USF leadership, College of Nursing faculty, donors, and local health care professionals attended a Dec. 17 reception celebrating the launch of the accelerated second degree nursing program at the St. Petersburg campus.
Cultural Fair Shares Global Fare
Students in the USF College of Nursing's Global Citizens Project course dished out cultural facts and culinary favorites during a Cultural Fair on Nov. 25 showcasing what they are learning in the classroom.

Groups of students shared nursing and health-related information about their assigned countries while giving a taste of the cuisine.
