Boise School District parents and guardians are invited to attend a presentation by Internationally-known Educator, Author and Speaker Tom Schimmer entitled Grading in Schools Today from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the auditorium at South Jr. High located at 3101 Cassia St., Boise. You'll learn:
- Why teaching has changed since you were in school.
- How today's grading practices hold students accountable.
- What is the purpose of homework.
- How a grade builds confidence
- What a grade should tell you about your student.
- How you and your children can be more involved in the learning process.

IdahoPTV and the Boise School District are hosting a FREE screening of the new Ken Burns documentary "The Vietnam War" just for EDUCATORS! It will be held on October 12th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at South Jr. High AND you can also join in online (more information to come). We will have a panel of Vietnam War veterans, and a highlight of teaching resources available! Teachers: Register online for this event.

Boise School District 2018 National Merit Semifinalists Announced:
Today, officials from National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of Boise School District students selected as Semifinalists in the 63rd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The 30 students from Boise School District selected for this national honor represent 35% of Idaho's total number of 2018 National Merit Semifinalists (86). The Boise School District enrolls about 9% of the students in the state of Idaho.
"Only one percent of students nationwide achieve National Merit Semi-Finalist status. The hard work and diligence of these students is paying off. Congratulations to each of our award winners and their families," said Boise Schools Superintendent Don Coberly. "The Boise School District is committed to providing the advanced, rigorous coursework and highly skilled teachers students need to earn this recognition."
The Boise School District students named National Merit Semifinalists are pictured below in alphabetical order by last name. These academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation issued a
news release with the names of the Boise School District students and other Idaho students selected as National Merit Semifinalists.

Capital High School Student Selected for State Position: Capital High School senior Fanisee Bias was recently selected Governor of the 71st Session of the
Idaho Syringa Girls State program that was held on the Northwest Nazarne University campus in Nampa, ID June 11-16, 2017. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the Girls State Program. This unique program gives young women the opportunity to learn how city, county, and state government functions, as well as how political parties work. Through this program, it's hoped that attendees will become more involved citizens.

Team From TVMSC Earns First Place Overall at Robotics Tournament: O
n Friday, August 11th, the Treasure Valley Mathematics & Science Center Zero Robotics team, composed of Samuel Bray and Joshua Planting (pictured L to R) competed in a Zero Robotics Middle School Tournament that was held locally at Boise State University. The team was competing against national and international Zero Robotics teams in the Championship matches for the 2017 Zero Robotics season.
Zero Robotics is a computer programming competition for middle school students. Students learned to control satellites aboard the International Space Station over the summer. Teams met at local sites from June 12th - July 21st to learn coding and game strategy. Teams design a program that guides satellite robots that are on the International Space Station to complete a series of complex tasks.
At the end of the day's events, the team from Treasure Valley Math & Science Center earned first place overall. They had competed in the finals rounds against teams from Russia and California in the final matches.
Honoring Those Who Serve Our Students - September's Red & Golden Apple Award Recipients Announced:
Each month, the Boise School Board honors deserving teachers and support staff through the District's highest awards program - the Red Apple Award for teachers and the Golden Apple Award for classified employees.
On Monday, September 11, 2017, the Board of Trustees presented the Golden Apple Award to Jo Castleman, Attendance Secretary, Fairmont Junior High School, pictured left receiving the award from Board President Nancy Gregory.
For the Red Apple Award the Board of Trustees honored Laurie McNamara, World Language Teacher, Hillside Junior High School, pictured below receiving the award from Board Trustee Dave Wagers.

Counselor Receives Yale University Educator Award:
East Junior High School Counselor Josh Ritchie (formerly a counselor at Borah High School), has
been selected as a recipient of the 2017 Yale Educator Award.
This award, sponsored by the Yale Office of Undergraduate Admissions, recognizes teachers and counselors from around the world who inspire and support their students to perform at high levels and to achieve excellence. Students entering the Yale Class of 2021 were asked to nominate outstanding educators who have deeply impacted their lives. Mr. Ritchie was nominated for the award by recent Borah High School graduate Anna McClain-Sims and then selected as a winner by a committee in the Yale University Office of Undergraduate Admissions. "As our committee reviewed nominations, we were constantly reminded of the unique and critical role that exceptional educators play in shaping their students' futures by encouraging them to pursue their goals," wrote Yale Undergraduate Admissions. "T
he entire admissions office credits the excellent quality of this year's freshman class to teachers and counselors like you who have been shaping our students long before they arrive at Yale."

Boise District Science Teacher Captures Eclipse Images From 45,000 Feet:
Paul Verhage, Science Teacher at Boise District's Treasure Valley Mathematics & Science Center, captured some increible images (pictured below) during the recent solar eclipse. "I was able to launch a high altitude weather balloon at the Ontario airport and see 80 seconds of totality," explained Verhage. "I collected data on radiation, weather, and light intensity. I can say that neutrons were detected and I'll be asking everyone (Verhage's students) to count the number of bubbles so I can get an idea of how many." Verhage believes the balloon actually made it to 89,000 feet, but will wait to study the data collected before confirming an exact altitude. Verhage was able to recover the weather balloon, but not without some effort. "The balloon landed 1,000 feet off the road and 700 feet up a mountain. I'm a big scraped up but otherwise I was able to extract the payload," said Verhage.

2017 Bond & Maintenance Projects Update - Thank You, Boise!:
On Monday, September 11, 2017 the Board of Trustees of the Boise School District received a 2017 Bond Update from the District administration about construction projects and maintenance work underway or completed due to successful passage of the March 2017 Bond Election.
Current capital projects include:
Construction of a new Amity Elementary School on the same site to replace the 1979 building with an earthen roof plagued with leaks. The new school will provide a modern educational facility to better serve the needs of our students, staff members and our school community.
An expansion of Timberline High School to handle growth in Southeast Boise. When finished, the project will provide modern science labs and art classrooms that better meet the educational needs of students and staff members. Given the explosive growth in Southeast Boise, the new addition will relieve overcrowding at Timberline, as well as provide students with modern educational facilities.
Building an addition on to the Dennis Technical Education Center,
which will allow the District to expand job training programs at the Center to help students better prepare for future postsecondary and career success. Expansion of the Pro-Tech Center will allow students to gain valuable skills with the addition of the following, industry-aligned job training programs:
- Electrical
- Plumbing
- Heating-Air Conditioning (HVAC)
Construction of a new Whittier Elementary School
(beginning in October) on the same site to address overcrowding, safety issues and critical facility needs. The new Whittier Elementary School will help address current student overcrowding, improve student and staff safety, meet modern education standards, and honor the overall mission of the school.

K-6 Report Card Re-Design:
To help prepare our students to be college and career ready, Boise School District has updated the K-6 report card. The new K-6 report card will now closely align to Idaho Core Standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Social Studies, Science, Health & P.E. and Music. The purpose of the report card is to communicate the student's progression towards learning goals, highlight strengths, and guide improvement. The District has published a Parent Guide To K-6 Report Card Re-Design brochure to explain the changes made to the new K-6 report card. In addition, the District has created a K-6 Report Card Re-Design website to provide further information for parents and guardians.

Programs. Breakfast and lunch are served at all Boise schools. Suppers are provided at 7 schools with Boise Parks & Recreation after school programs including Garfield, Grace Jordan, Hawthorne, Jefferson, Morley Nelson, Whitney, and William Howard Taft. Free & reduced price meals are available to students who qualify and are free to students who attend a Community Eligibility Provision schools. Speech Contest:
Each fall the Ada Soil & Water Conservation District hosts a speech contest for students in Ada County in 9-12th grades. The topic is based off the theme from the National Association of Conservation District's Stewardship Week. This year it is "Healthy Soils are Full of Life." Participants must give a 3 to 5 minute speech relating to the theme.
