Coronavirus Precautions

If you have been watching the news lately, you’ve probably heard about the coronavirus , which has impacted China and several other countries including the U.S. At WMS, the health and safety of your children is of the highest importance. For this reason, Nurse Kathy is staying in touch with nurses throughout the state, and we are paying close attention to the information the Delaware Division of Public Health is providing to schools. Although there are no confirmed cases in Delaware or the surrounding states , we want to be proactive in sharing this helpful information with our community.

The Division of Public Health recommends the same precautions we use to avoid colds and the flu:
  • Please keep your child at home if he or she is sick (i.e., has a fever of 100.4°F, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, muscle aches, weakness, wet/croupy cough or nasal congestion).
  • Remind your child to cover his or her coughs and sneezes with tissues, or to cough or sneeze into the inner elbow.
  • Practice good hand-washing technique with soap and water - use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap/water are not available.
  • Students should be reminded to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Avoid contact with others who are sick.

Please contact Nurse Kathy or your health-care provider with any questions. You can also visit the DE Division of Public Health website for further information.
Welcome New Staff

This January, we welcomed two new staff members to the WMS community.

The first, Brandy Solomon (top left), may be a familiar face to some of our elementary families. Brandy started at WMS as our new soccer coach last fall, and officially joined our staff as a permanent substitute and Primary before-care teacher last month. Brandy is also continuing her role as a coach, leading our basketball team this winter and heading up our running club in the spring.

If your child is in the Toddler Program, you may already know Crissy Wolf (bottom left), our newest toddler assistant teacher. Crissy works in Room 3 and also assists with after-care in Room 8.

If you run into Brandy or Crissy in the halls, please be sure to give them a warm WMS welcome!
ALUMNI PROFILE
Mallory Johnston (WMS '04): Building Strong Bodies Through Strong Relationships

Unlike her twin brother Ross, Mallory Johnston had no idea what career path she wanted to pursue, even after she had been accepted into college. She had applied as a business major, but right before she started as a freshman at University of Delaware (UD), a light bulb went off for Mallory. Her mother was undergoing physical therapy for an injury, and Mallory found herself growing increasingly curious about the process.

“I liked the idea of helping people in a conservative, non-invasive way without medication,” she said.

She made a quick decision to switch her major to exercise science - a program designed for students who might want to pursue careers as physician assistants, occupational and physical therapists, or even doctors and dentists - and by winter break, she was logging volunteer hours at Elite Physical Therapy.

That spring, Mallory shadowed a pediatric physical therapist who worked in an elementary school, and knew she wanted to continue on the path to physical therapy. The next summer, she volunteered at Wilmington Hospital’s acute rehabilitation unit, and continued to log hours volunteering and observing physical therapists in practice through her remaining undergraduate years.

She began applying to physical therapy graduate programs at the beginning of her senior year and was accepted to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. She completed the USciences’ three-year doctor of physical therapy program in the spring of 2017, and passed her board exam to become a licensed physical therapist that summer.
