Jane Gilbert Exhibition at Salt Island Provisions Gallery
For the month of March, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St.,
www.saltislandprovisions.com
)
will feature a collection of rich, abstract paintings by local artist Jane Gilbert.
Jane Gilbert's artistic career has garnered multiple awards for her paintings, prints and photographs. She has works in major private and public collections, including Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum, University of Maine, University of New England, and the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine; and has received project grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Anne McKee Artist Fund in Key West, and the Florida Keys Council of the Arts. In 2014 she curated the exhibit "The Abstract Eye" for the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.
Gilbert's painting subjects range from landscapes of woods, seashores and gardens to more abstract compositions with rich, sensual layers of lines, marks and fields of color, using the natural world as a base.
"I paint in response to a place, an object or an idea, or to the simple joy of putting line and color on canvas, and seeing where it takes me," Gilbert said. "For this show at Salt Gallery, I thought about light spilling from the sun or moon onto the ocean and land-forms below. My aim is to convey some of the magic, mystery and excitement of the lush natural world around us, and to create a painting that will resonate over time."
"Each one of Jane's pieces has such soul and we are so happy to have them on the walls at SALT," says gallery owner Laura Richardson. "Her ethereal pieces have so much depth and richness, they complement the vibe of the gallery perfectly."
SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine and Florida Keys honey.
Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Richardson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Gilbert's work will remain on display until the end of the month. For more information, call 305-517-6088 or visit

Intimate Key West vignettes and dramatic nautical vistas share the walls when Rick Worth and A.D. Tinkham open at Jag Gallery. "We are excited to start our season with Rick and A.D." said gallery owner Letty Nowak" They've both been making work here for several years" Though they share the same island, their visions of Key West are unique. Tinkham, who says that he feels most alive when on the water in life threatening storms, uses subtle values to capture the power and depth of untamed oceans. Worth incorporates the colorful history of Key West not only in his vivid portraits of local landscapes and vernacular architecture, but in the vintage roof tiles he often uses as canvas. SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE 2020 THE TWILIGHT ZONE FEB 18-MARCH 14
"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the Twilight Zone!"
Always one of our most popular shows of any season, come enjoy an evening of quirky, out-of-the-ordinary short plays, populated with a host of top Key West actors.
Starring SUSANNAH WELLS, DON BEARDEN, JEREMY ZOMA, ANDREW HODGE, & AMBER MCDONALD GOOD
FRANKIE AND JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DeLUNE MARCH 24-APRIL 18
A timeless love story of a waitress and a short order cook. Their sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious interplay lights up this one night stand between two lonely people who long for more.
As Clair de Lune plays on the radio, Johnny woos the reluctant Frankie and we root for this odd couple to find their way to each other and out of their past disappointments. Terrence McNally was recently awarded the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. The Red Barn first produced this play in 1990 and is thrilled to honor Mr. McNally and our theatre's 40th Anniversary with another production of this beautiful play.

The College of the Florida Keys held a Graduation Ceremony for Two Law Enforcement Academies
The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) held a graduation ceremony for two academies completed through CFK's Institute for Public Safety on February 21 at its Upper Keys Center in Tavernier. A total of 18 cadets-15 in a basic law enforcement academy and three in a correctional officer crossover to law enforcement academy-successfully completed their respective training program. Upon passing the state certification exam, each will be eligible to become Florida Law Enforcement Officers.
Cathy Torres, Director of CFK's Institute for Public Safety, recognized top performing graduates with special accolades. Class captain Kyle Chandler earned a leadership award. Natasha Burgos-Hernandez and Shelsy Fernandez were recognized for academic achievement. "Top Gun" honors went to Luis Rodriguez for superior shooting skills. David Morado and Alyssa Raistrick received Physical Fitness awards and the "PIG" award, which recognizes pride, integrity, and guts, went to John Perrotti.
Members of The College of the Florida Keys' Basic Law Enforcement Academy 71, pictured, graduated along with members of the Crossover Corrections to Law Enforcement Academy 31 on February 21.
CFK's law enforcement officer programs satisfy the training requirements of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. CFK is currently accepting applications for two upcoming basic law enforcement academies that begin in May-one at the CFK's Key West Campus and the other at its Upper Keys Center. All of the classes are part-time, in the evening. Applications are due April 4. For more information about CFK's Institute for Public Safety. Go To College Website Under Academics Basic Recruit

Sheriff's Office Captain honored by Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission
Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay is pleased to announce that Sheriff's Office Bureau of Corrections Capt. Jon Crane has been selected by the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission as their 2019 Accreditation Manager of the Year.
"I am extremely proud of Capt. Jon Crane as he deserves this honor," said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. "Capt. Crane's daily dedication to maintaining our accreditation status reflects my commitment to excellence and professionalism across this agency."
The Bureau of Corrections holds professional accreditation on both a state and national level. The Sheriff's Office is professionally accredited by five separate accreditation agencies:

corrections accreditation)
The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement
Accreditations
The Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission (the
agency which has selected Capt. Crane as their 2019
Accreditation Manager of the Year)

Bahama Village Music Program Director looks back 20 years and forward to March 29 Birthday Bash at Coffee Butler Amphitheater
On Sunday, March 29, 2020 from 12:00pm - 6:00pm, the Bahama Village Music Program invites the public to help them celebrate their 20
th
anniversary with a Birthday Bash at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater-a free, family-friendly day filled with music and performances by Key West's finest musicians and BVMP students, audience jam-alongs, an artisan market, a cash bar, food trucks, a silent auction, a kid's zone, the inaugural presentation of the Key West Music Hall of Fame, and of course, birthday cake.
Throughout the program's two decades, the Bahama Village Music Program has served the community through music, offering over 20,000 free lessons taught by more than a dozen student teachers, professional instructors, and dedicated volunteers to over 2,000 children who could not otherwise afford it.
"BVMP has always been my safe place," says
Program Director Kate Divoll, who began her studies at the then-new program at the age of 7 in 1999. "
I learned patience, humility, and the importance of practice here."
Since then, Divoll has watched the program grow from a storage room with three keyboards to a comprehensive music school with 200 students and two choir programs, two strings programs, a jazz ensemble, a ukulele orchestra, a steel pan band, a musical theatre program, music theory and songwriting classes, the "School of Rock" band, contemporary and Junkanoo dance, and a summer music camp-all of which she now oversees with Executive Director Katchen Duncan.
Divoll schedules and teaches lessons, oversees teenage mentors and their stipends, writes grants, and directs the overall implementation of the program. But just as important to her is tending to each child's social-emotional growth and thesense of community needed to help their self-esteem soar.
"I have given countless hugs, snacks, and pep talks to our students," she says. "The level of trust partnered with a completely free, student-driven music curriculum is something to behold."
Behold the magic of it on Sunday, March 29 at their 20
th
Birthday Bash as they celebrate this important program that has inspired children island-wide to discover the musician within and thank the donors, foundations, and community-members that have supported them over the years.
"We would not be celebrating our 20th year without the kindness and generosity of so many," says Divoll. "A whole-hearted thank you to all that have contributed. Here's to another 20 years!".

Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.
