IN THIS ISSUE
Join us on Shrove Tuesday, February 25, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm for the 3rd Annual PANCAKES AT THE PIER, at the St. Simons Village Casino! You don't want to miss this! (Scroll down for details!)

Rector's Ramblings

Over a year ago I Rambled about my upcoming sabbatical, planned for summer 2020 - this summer. I wrote about it then because we were forming a committee to apply for a grant to fund the sabbatical, a grant we were ultimately awarded last fall. So the sabbatical is on. While some people thought I was going to be away last summer, (some folks were surprised to see me in June and July!) I will actually be away from Christ Church this summer, beginning in May and ending in August. May isn't that far away. I will be rambling a few times about the sabbatical; what it means, what it will involve, and how everyone will be a part of it in some ways. For today, I want to start with the why.

Formation

Lenten Contemplative Group
There's a difference between knowing about God and knowing God. Contemplative practices help us know God. Through prayer, worship, scripture, meditation, and silence, we experience God's presence and are healed, renewed and transformed by God's love. Our group format includes chanting, centering prayer, and lectio divina. We enter and leave in silence. All are welcome to join us. While this group is being formed primarily within the Christian faith, contemplation is practiced by most faith traditions. If you're new to contemplative practice and have never practiced centering prayer and/or lectio divina before, no problem. Call Randy to schedule a 15-minute orientation before your first meeting. We will meet in the Vestry Room of the Christ Church Parish House for five Thursdays from 11:00 am to Noon (March 12, 19 & 26 and April 2 and 9). Come when you can! For more information, contact Randy Siegel, 828 301-0819 or [email protected].
Wednesday Lenten Study
Beginning Wednesday, March 4 and concluding on April 8, Fr. Tom will lead This Is Your Life: A Lenten Journey. The study will focus on the different periods of our lives, through the lens of faith. The sessions will begin each week at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall, with lunch at 12:30 pm for those who can attend. All are encouraged to join the Healing Service that precedes the book study, at noon, in the historical church. Contact Fr. Tom at [email protected] for more information.
Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday class is completing a study of  Reckless Love: Jesus' Call to Love Our Neighbor During the season of Lent, the group will take up a special study using a book by Adam Hamilton entitled, The Walk: Five  Essential Practices of the Christian Life . The study begins on the first Sunday in Lent, March 1 and will continue through Palm Sunday, April 5. The class meets in the Adult Sunday school room in the Parish Hall at 10:30 am on Sunday mornings.

How do we walk with Christ - daily follow him, grow in him, and faithfully serve him? In the Gospels, Jesus modeled for us the Christian spiritual life. The apostles taught it in their writings. And the Church has, through the last 2,000 years, sought to pursue this Christian spiritual life. Deepen your walk with Christ as we explore the five essential practices of worship, study, serving, giving, and bearing witness to our faith. All adults are welcome. Books will be available in the CCF Book Shop.   For more information, contact Bob Brown at  [email protected] .
Men's Study Group

The Men's Discussion Group gathers on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am in the Youth Room in the Parish House. They are currently reading, The Great Spiritual Migration by Brian D. McLaren.  The Christian story, from Genesis until now, is fundamentally about people on the move - outgrowing old, broken religious systems and embracing new, more redemptive ways of life.   If you'd like to join this study , please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .
Episcopal Church 101
Episcopal Church 101 is an eight week offering for those interested in joining the Episcopal Church or simply learning more about our practices, history, theology and why we do what we do. Classes will take place on the following Thursdays: February 27, March 5, 12, 19 & 26 and April 2, 23 & 30, at 5:30 pm. If you would like to join this group, please contact  Mtr. Becky at [email protected]  or call the church office at 912-638-8683.

Safeguarding God's Children
The Episcopal Church is committed to providing a safe and loving environment for our children and youth to come and explore their faith and spirituality. One of the ways we do our best to accomplish this is training our children and youth workers, as well as our church leaders in the prevention of sexual abuse happening with any children trusted in our care. Mother Katie will be leading Safeguarding training classes for all who need to take the course on March 5, from 10:00 - 11:30 am or 5:30 - 7:00 pm. Mission
and Outreach

Bridge Run 2020

This year's SGHS Bridge Run offered a tremendous opportunity for the Christ Church team to get involved with the community, as we joined with the other Episcopal churches in Glynn County in hosting a hospitality tent and offering blessings to all who were present. Our team of 40 walkers and runners braved strong headwinds to make it over the bridge and back, and we even had a few runners place in the top ten, in their particular categories. Congratulations to Julia Jordan (6th Place; Girls 9 and Under), Calleigh Purdy (7th Place; Girls 10-14) and Pamela Hamilton (1st Place; Women 70-74)! See photos of the winners  and all the other fun and excitement of the Bridge Run here . To read the moving blessing that was given that morning, click here.

SOAR Mardi Gras Party
There will be a Mardi Gras parade and party for the members of SOAR (Social Opportunities & Active Recreation, Inc.) on Monday, February 24 at 1:00 pm in the parish hall. We're hoping that lots of our parishioners will come out and show some hospitality and support for the developmentally disabled folks who will be attending this event. Kathleen Turner will be providing music and entertainment and refreshments will be served. Join us!
Volunteers Needed for Reading Program at Burroughs Molette Elementary School
Would you consider a volunteer opportunity that will change the life of a child? In 2015, Glynn Episcopal Ministries formed a tutoring program that does just that.  Your commitment would include a 3-5-year period with the same child at Burroughs-Molette Elementary School during the academic year. You will tutor twice each week for not more that 45 minutes using a program that is fully developed: The Barton Reading and Spelling System. You will learn how to deliver the lessons and be well prepared before beginning. Want to learn more? Contact T. Boles, member of Christ Church and program coordinator, at 231-360-9591 or at [email protected]

Two Christ Church members, Sharon Moser and Judy Lance have been tutoring in our program for more than two years. They would be happy to chat with you about their experiences.

Church Docents Needed!
With Spring just around the corner, our Afternoon Docent Team ranks are beginning to thin. Some of our members have moved away, others have had to go on leave, some prepare to fly north for the summer, and many enjoy travel plans. At the same time, busloads of visitors will begin arriving in the afternoons, eager to learn about our historic church. We could use some help!
Our docents familiarize themselves with the history of the church in order to answer questions from interested visitors; they also sell cookbooks and history booklets, and keep a few simple records. The best part is interacting with people from all over the world who have come to hear about our historic island church. We always receive more than we give!
You will receive a packet of information on the church building, history and docent duties to review, and be assigned someone to "shadow" during one or more shifts before flying solo. While some of our team enjoy working several days a month, one day of docent duty a month is all that is asked of our docents. We are open from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday.
We are also looking for "greeters" to provide a second pair of hands on busy afternoons - typically mid-week.  The docent on hand would provide the history and answer questions; your job would be to direct traffic and help with cookbook and history pamphlet sales. If this job is of interest to you, we can put you to work immediately.
PLEASE CONTACT: Susan Garrett, Docent Team Leader by email:  [email protected] or phone: (912) 230-8566. The best way to know if this is for you, is to come shadow one of us - no obligation.
Backpack Buddies - Packapalooza!

Breakdown on the assembly line? No worries! Our crack team had it up and operating again in no time!

Wednesday, March 4 will be the launch of Packapalooza, where our Olympic-class Backpack Buddies team will pick up food, set up, and pack hundreds of bags by noon.

Those wanting to help set up, as well as pack, can come to the parish hall at 9:15 am that Wednesday, and those who only want to pack may come at 10:30 am. Many hands not only make light work, but help us set the land speed record for food bag packing.  Hope you will join us for one or both segments of Packapalooza!

For more information about Backpack Buddies,
please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].
Join the Shepherds for Seniors
Shepherds for Seniors is a ministry to the elderly poor in Glynn County, celebrating its tenth year of service. The mission of Shepherds for Seniors is to improve the quality of life for elderly and/or disabled people who may be living below or near the poverty line. Over the years, community members have been assisted with monthly grocery gift cards, errand assistance and other non-monetary help. Please consider supporting this mission by contributing financial assistance or by becoming a volunteer. Contact The Rev. Dcn. R. V. Cate at [email protected]. More information about the program can be found here.
