ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Chamber aims to retain talent, diversify industries by 2025
Taylor Girtman, Gainesville Sun

Ed Jimenez doesn’t want to explain Gainesville in relation to Orlando. He wants people to recognize the city in its own right.

Jimenez, CEO of UF Health Shands, spoke Thursday at the Greater Gainesville Chamber’s kickoff event for its 2025 economic development strategy. The $5 million plan, Collaborate 2025, will begin in January and has three focuses: talent, opportunity and place.

Jimenez said the talent at UF and Santa Fe is strong among more than 50,000 students, but Gainesville’s issue is keeping talent in town.
“It would be wonderful if they all stayed and worked here, but they don’t,” he said.

The talent goals of Collaborate 2025 include producing “homegrown talent” at Gainesville colleges, attracting and retaining workers. “Opportunity” goals include attracting businesses to the area, business policy advocacy and innovation. “Place” goals include building desirable live-work-play communities and increasing mobility and infrastructure.

Property to become 300-unit multifamily project at Newberry Park

November 5, 2019 — Gainesville, Fla. — The Drotos Ryals Team of Colliers International in Gainesville has facilitated the $6.75 million sale of a 300-unit multifamily site at Newberry Park, located at 12019 W. Newberry Road in Gainesville. The purchase closed on September 30, 2019.

Dan Drotos, Rory Causseaux and Mike Ryals represented the seller, Parkwood Alachua Land Investments, Inc., in the transaction. The property will be used for the development of Newberry Park, a 300-unit multifamily project that is anticipated to break ground before the end of 2019.

The development was approved under Alachua County’s Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) ordinance. “Gainesville’s multifamily market has grown at a rapid pace in recent years, as changing dynamics in the housing market have created demand for more upscale, walkable, mixed-use housing options,” said Drotos. “Newberry Park will provide unique amenities in the growing Jonesville submarket, which Gainesville’s multifamily market has not seen before.”
