Did AB5 “the Gig Work Bill” get passed?
Oh, yes, it did … now what does that mean for you and me?
As employers, we have been navigating through the “Exempt” or “Non-Exempt” employee status for years. This new law targets how small businesses treat freelancers and independent contractors, leveraging tough restrictions. AB5 requires gig employees to have the same benefits and rights as “employees.” This includes minimum wages, sick leave, worker’s compensation and unemployment. Are there exceptions? What is the ABC Test?

This seminar, co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women- Orinda Moraga Lafayette and Danville Alamo Walnut Creek Branches, is free and open to the public.
Work Smart, AAUW’s salary negotiation program, is designed to help close the gender wage gap by empowering women with the skills and confidence needed to negotiate their work salaries and benefits.

8th Annual FREE Camp and School Fair in Lafayette Feb. 23
The 8th annual free Contra Costa Camp and School Fair with free activities and 70 exhibitors is at Acalanes High School on Sunday, Feb. 23, allowing attendees to view a smorgasbord of camps, enrichment programs, schools, S.T.E.M. and S.T.E.A.M. programs, performing arts, preschools, cooking, educational, sports and other programs available this spring and summer.
Contra Costa Camp and School Fair is being held for the eighth year at Acalanes with ample free parking and free admission from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Free Camp and School Fairs will also be held on Feb. 22 in San Ramon, Mar. 21 in Sunnyvale, Mar. 22 in San Rafael and Mar. 28 in Emeryville.
The fairs are presented by Bay Area Festivals, which also produces Bay Area KidFest (31th annual festival May 23-25 on Memorial Day Weekend in Concord), Contra Costa Con 2 (July 19 in Concord), Bay Area Kids’ Book Fairs (Oct. 17 in Silicon Valley and Oct. 18 in East Bay), Tri-Valley Con (Nov. 1 in Dublin) and Super Holiday Boutiques (Dec. 5-6).
The first 200 families at the Camp and School Fair receive a free Camp Bag. There is a free raffle drawing for camps and KidFest tickets. Anyone bringing a can of food for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano will receive an extra raffle ticket for each can. Admission is free and there is ample free parking.
