September 27 Board Meeting Highlights
SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, September 27, 2018 regular meeting. 

The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
  • Annual Update on Outcomes Measured in the District Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)
  • Sustainability Program Update
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Adult School, 789 E Poplar Avenue, San Mateo.

Twenty Two Seniors Are National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Twenty two of the top scholars in the San Mateo Union High School District's Class of 2019 have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. 

The monetary awards, to be announced through the spring and summer of next year, are regarded as being among the most prestigious available to U.S. high school seniors.

The S Word Addresses Stigma Associated with Suicide, Mental Health Issues

More than 120 students, parents and community members attended the September 19 screening of "The S Word" at San Mateo High School's Performing Arts Center. The groundbreaking, hour-long documentary chronicles the story of a suicide survivor on a mission to find other survivors to shatter the silence surrounding the issue. 

The event was followed by a panel discussion and an opportunity for Q and A with the audience members. Members of: San Mateo County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services Office of Diversity and Equity , San Mateo County Pride Center , San Mateo Police Activities League , StarVista , SMUHSD Wellness Center and Bring Change 2 Mind Club were on hand to share information and resources.

This event was sponsored by Star Vista, San Mateo Union High School District, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services of San Mateo County and supported through the SMUHSD Mental Health/Wellness Program.

Middle College Hosts Half the Sky Movie Screening on October 3




San Mateo Middle College and The Middle College Effect present a free screening of the documentary series, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, on October 3 at 7:00 p.m.

The series is shot in 10 countries: Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia and the U.S.

Inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn's book, the documentary series introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable - and fighting bravely to change them.

The film reflects viable and sustainable options for empowerment and offers an actionable blueprint for transformation.

The free screening will be held at the College of San Mateo in Building 10's Bayview Dining Room.

A community dialogue will follow the screening.



5th Annual Transition Fair is October 20

Join the community on Saturday, October 20 for the  5th annual Stepping Up Transition to Independence Fair. 

Learn about programs and services available to students who have aged out or graduated from school-based special education programs. 

This once a year event brings together 40 agencies that provide  higher education job training, employment day programs living options , and  health services  to adults with disabilities.

The event will also feature workshops  ranging from  benefits counseling advocacy healthcare employment college preparedness  and  assistive technology . Cover band The Advocates will perform again this year.

This fair is free and open to everyone in San Mateo County.

Local high school students are invited to work at Vote Centers in San Mateo County for the November 6 Statewide General Election through the County of San Mateo's democracyLIVE! program. 

It's a great way to experience democracy in action! DemocracyLive will accept applications up until the week of the Election.
