Thomas leads high school project involving KC mayor's office
Eric Thomas led a team of students from a Kansas City high school in a project that included interviewing Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and his general counsel during the school’s interim week. The project focused on a proposal by Lucas that some people convicted of nonviolent marijuana charges would be pardoned and that the city would help in the process of expunging their records. The team of eight St. Teresa’s students interviewed the mayor and his general counsel Jane Pansing Brown , who is an alumna of the school. After they completed their project — a multimedia website — the students presented the project to Morgan Said , a St. Teresa’s Academy graduate and also a graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Said now works as director of communications for the mayor’s office. Thomas will continue covering the mayor with a semester-long documentary project completed by KU students during Spring 2020. The project will investigate how Lucas’ work as a KU law professor sheds light on his work as mayor and how he juggles the two commitments.
