Dear Friends and Supporters of Saint John’s:

This Valentine's Day, we express our heartfelt gratitude to all of our community partners, donors and volunteers for all you do for Saint John's! Without your support, we would not be able to provide all of the services we do, which make such a positive difference in the lives of the women and children we serve.

I want to extend our appreciation to a few of the companies that have recently assisted us at Saint John's, including Murphy Austin who provides us with legal services on a variety of levels and SMUD who is working with us to upgrade HVAC, LED and solar to help reduce our energy costs. These energy upgrades will be a tremendous and much needed improvement to our facilities.

We also want to acknowledge recent visits from Swinerton, Kaiser, Markstein Beverage, Dignity Health, Healthnet, SMUD and AECOM who have chosen Saint John's for volunteer work days, providing hundreds of volunteers to work on a wide range of projects to improve and maintain our campus for our families. If you are interested in volunteering, contact our volunteer manager Karen Edwards .

Thank you for your continued support! Saint John's is a better organization because of you!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Marc Cawdrey, Interim CEO

Volunteer Spotlight: Ellen Gemma
"I wanted to give back to a program that I thought made a real difference in people's lives. I had spent my whole career in education but wanted to break out of my comfort zone, and I had known about and been interested in the work at Saint John's for a while. It's a fantastic model; just wish I could do more!"

Let us introduce you to Ellen Gemma. She is one of our amazing volunteers in the Communications/Development Department! She joins us once a week to help research and write grant opportunities and also writes fabulous blog stories on the women at Saint John's.

Ellen has a great sense of humor and is willing to take on any project we send her way. You may recognize her as she was a former assistant principal at Jesuit High School and former principal at St. John the Evangelist Elementary School.

When she's not at Saint John's, Ellen also volunteers at Cristo Rey High School. She and her husband enjoy their cabin at Lake Almanor and love spending time with their grandkids.

Thank you Ellen for all you do!

New Blog Post - Kinetic Kizzie
Some people just radiate energy and optimism; that’s the case with Kizzie. She made me smile––and even laugh with her––from the moment I met her. Whether she realizes it or not, that personality is a key part of her whole story.

Energy may not always be a good thing; it needs to be directed positively, and for much of Kizzie’s life, it surely wasn’t. An angry young person prone to fighting everyone and everything, she found herself deep into drugs and alcohol when she was in her early twenties. It was, however, her mother’s death and the issues that came with that, that seemed to send her on a total downward spiral.
